More about the tower. So these are the base render and the material ID channel. The material ID option is perhaps one of the best features of Vray and it allows you to easily selects certain materials as long you set it in the material editor. The actual base renders itself is pretty basic and most of the work was done using photoshop. I tend to stack different channels as they are called and  other than material ID there are plenty of other channels that can give you even greater control over your render.Â
If your rendering a large image (this one was 9000x6000 pixels) it might take forever to render it out in detail. Plus mapping all the textures onto sketchup is never the best idea since sketchup isn't the best software when it comes to handling large amounts of textures.Â
So I bought a new computer and thats where I did these renders. It was cheap and its been giving problems since I bought it. It has only 8GB of RAM which is quickly consumed by programs like photoshop. When photoshop runs out of RAM it resorts to using scratch disks which, unless you have an SSD, can slow your workflow.Â
The Tower. Been working on this one since Christmas but got interrupted by a few things and I wasn't able to complete it for a while. I modelled it pretty quickly, roughly based on pictures of the Barbican and again just to test out photoshopping different textures of concrete. I did a very basic base render, which I will also post and then added the textures and shadows on photoshop with help of my Wacom tablet. Â
Water Tank
Water Tower. Hope everyone had a great Christmas! Now that I've got a laptop my posts are going to much more regular. Been working on a series of drawings that explores textures, especially concrete and brick so I'll be posting those over the coming weeks. This drawing was done using a base render from V-ray and then the textures were added on Photoshop. I'll also post a more zoomed in version of this so that the textures can be seen more clearly. Also check out my profile on redbubble.Â

Its been a while since I've posted anything (months actually), the primary reason is that my computer just died and even the Germans couldn't fix it. The reason it died is because of balsa wood dust getting into the system. Anyway I spent my time hunting for a Part 1 job and the good news is that I actually managed to snag one! The firm is in Shoreditch and its called Buckley Gray Yeoman and they're a great firm and do check their website out, they've done some uber cool projects. It's been my third day here and it's been thoroughly enjoyable except for the UI shock of shifting to Macs. As a hard core PC user I find macs terribly clumsy and I just can't get it to do what I want it to. Also I had to get trained in Vectorworks which again is so different from AutoCAD. I'll talk more about this later. I'll try to do more regular post on what I'm working on and also the continuation of my regular work (final portfolio and such). I'm also planning to do some posts on how I went about looking for a job and the kind of portfolios and CVs I created for that purpose. I had lots of help and support from friends and I hope I can provide some useful tips about the whole thing.Â
P.S The cider is on the table because it's a Friday and everyone gathers around for a beer, not because I'm an alcoholic (though there is an ongoing debate about that)
Detail. This was done in CAD and then I manually adjusted some of the line weights and hatching.Â
zunftHAUS with Daria Vidisheva. The intersection of the two buildings is a guild house a communal space for gardeners and the mechanics. The resolution was done really quickly since we had very little time and its a project by itself.Â
Final Elevation. Finally done with school!!! Handed in my last assignment (a massive academic portfolio that covered the work of the past three years). This was an elevation showing the intersection of the two housing schemes. Â

Zunfthaus. This is the intersection where maschinengeHĂUS pierces through the fabric of the grĂźneHAUS to create a communal space for the mechanics and the horticulturists for recreation. We didn't have much time to send too much time to design this space as we mostly concentrated on housing but it's a design project on its own.Â
Symbiogenese. Two days of work and an isometric showing mine and Daria's projects done. Because its A1 and I had so many layers the photoshop file was immense and the temporary file was an astonishing 60GB! I have no clue how my computer handled it!  It took me ages to render to each and every circle and get the line drawings cleaned up and right but it explains the different components of the symbiotic relationship of maschinengeHĂUS and the grĂźneHAUS (and yes we love German). I'll put links to Daria's project once she decides to upload them and also a more detailed look at each component once I'm done with it.Â
Environmental Section after printing. After I printed it I realized that there was something missing from the drawing. I added different skies the darker for the winter and also tired to create a sort of Xray through the existing section cut building in the middle of the greenhouse to hint at whats happening behind cause it was like a blot in the middle of the greenhouse and quite boring.Â
Summer and Winter Sections. Been working on these two sections for the past two days. Its 1-100 cross sections that expands on a previous section that I had done of the housing building and shows the closed greenhhouse in elevation. Each of the section is going to be a two page spread that illustrates the environmental response of the buildings. Also will have a 1-50 section that will go into a bit more detail of how the building responds to the climate. Â

Dawn and a lot of test prints and a diet of coffee and red bull (and peanuts). Another allnighter and ready to head back home as soon as I've backed stuff up. I do this because you can never predict when computers can fail and all your work with it. And its always good to back up the jpegs on a skydrive or google drive.Â
Concept Diagram. Since the beginning of the project I've been struggling to represent the complexity of the project and how it works. There were so many components involved from the Bio-gas to the CHP plant and how the symbiotic relationship of the residences with the closed greenhouse and how the closed greenhouse generated power and the inputs involved.... anyway it was a nightmare to explain during the crit. I knew the key to explaining it was a diagram but how do I make a diagram look good, architectural and explain things at the same time? I had done a couple of separate diagrams before I realized I could combine them to a circular diagram (keeps with our theme) like the the carbon or nitrogen cycle. I decided not to provide too much detail but rather show the the basic exchanges of energy involved and how they link together. Took a lot of time, thinking and research to do this but beats writing lots of text to explain your idea and it kind of looks like a Ferris wheel.Â
