Woolwich & The Arsenal

Year 3 / Studio 1 Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge This year we will explore the renewal of Woolwich and the Royal Arsenal, focusing our research on a string of sites forming a spine along the interface between these two distinct areas. The Royal Arsenal is undergoing a complete transformation following the Ministry of Defence’s move in 1994, and plans are now in place for a new masterplan encompassing further land along the river. More than 1,700 homes already exist at Royal Arsenal Riverside, with an additional 3,700 new homes planned, alongside commercial, retail, leisure and hotel space. A key part of these changes is the construction of a new Crossrail station, which has been part-funded by Berkeley Homes and expected to be functioning by 2018. The studio will be particularly interested in understanding the challenges that a transformation of this magnitude entails, particularly in achieving a set of balanced urban conditions where existing communities and city-shaping forces are at play.
