I need to rant about The Odyssey movie.
There are mild spoilers in this post so don’t read if you haven’t watched the movie and don’t know the story
I honestly was more disappointed than I thought I would be with The Odyssey. I already knew it would be a bit rushed because even in a 3 hour movie it wouldn’t be possible to put everything that happens in it.
The Odyssey is an epic poem and I didn’t think Nolan did a good job at making the movie epic, it felt very bland to me (also because everything was a bit too grey for me).
One of the biggest misses for me was Tom Holland’s characterization, it felt like they just took him from the Spider Man set and put him into Greek-like clothing. And talking about costume, Agamemnon… his armor was beautiful, however after almost 10 years of war it did not have ONE scratch on it. He was also almost like a statue I absolutely hated it.
But honesty, the part I hated the most was the horse. That fucking horse, it was so ugly and honestly it seemed so small once it was in scale in Troy. Also he changed the story??? The Greeks leave the horse on the beach (where there on soldiers almost drown inside of it) and they just waited for the Trojans to find it (??) and hope they took it into their walls.
However one of my favorite parts of the movie was Odysseus recounting what happened to Troy after the Greeks broke in to me it showed his humanity and that the Greeks weren’t the perfect heroes stories talk about. Also Zendaya, I loved her interpretation of Athena, and after that scene I loved her casting even more.
Overall I thought the movie lacked the magic these epic tales/poems usually have.
I just really needed to rant and get my thoughts out of my chest
