no, babe, i dont do casual. its mind numbing devotion for all eternity or nothing
Considering what had happened, Paek could piece things together and it touched his heart, it made the gun at his back feel lighter. His boy was scared and ran to him. He'd been interested enough to look him up on his own time and when faced with someone who had hurt him in the past, who’d hurt him again now, he ran straight to Paek. It was a trust that was enough to cause a small smile to break out on his lips. When was the last time someone who was not a child he'd raised trusted him so much? To run to him, not to hide or to avoid or avenge, but to protect. But that moment of light came with a heavy stone. This uncle had hurt Narise enough that even now, Narise was frightened enough to nearly have a heart attack, literally. That could not be tolerated. It would have to be handled and there was only one way to do that.
Narise was staring for several long minutes before he looked back at the menu in front of him, staring at it silently. Paek notices the wrinkle forming in his brow, small but there as his lips barely moved forming the names of the complex dishes. He reaches over and presses a hand on the menu, pulling Narise's eyes to him. "Why don't you leave the ordering to me this time? I'll order some of their best and you can get a taste so when we come back, you'll have a better idea what you want."
"That sounds good." Narise smiles. "None of these dishes sound edible. What even is this?"
"That particular dish is one of the only italian dishes on the menu. Most are a modern variant of our traditional dishes, but a few from other countries are added to satisfy a taste for other flavors and tourists." Paek explained, his own eyes on the menu so as to try and not embarrass his companion. Making Narise uncomfortable now would spoil the whole day.
After they order there's room to talk. Narise relaxes almost as soon as he has a sip of wine. "So what were you doing in a mall like that anyways?" He asks, curiosity in his tone. "Doesn't seem your kind of place."
Paek smiles wistfully, perhaps a bit bitterly as well. "Don't let present circumstances fool you. I spent plenty of time in worse shopping than that trying to sell something or buy some necessity or other." He won't frown, he doesn't want to sour the mood. "But you are right that it's not the kind of place that I would regularly go. There happens to be a particular leather goods shop there that does embossing that my son is a fan of."
"You have a son?" Narise's eyes narrow slightly as he tilts his head, studying Paek.
"Yes. His twenty-second birthday is tomorrow. I ordered a new set of custom collars and leashes for his dobermans. He adores those dogs."
"Twenty-two?" Narise echoes, his eyes going wide. The obvious shock making his beautiful eyes, big and doe-like. Paek is reminded of some sort of prey animal, the wide eyes when they're surprised, just before they bolt to find cover.
Paek stutters, staring at those wide eyes, his smooth facade cracking as he stumbles for words. "I.. um. Yes I do." He doesn't think he's even blinked. "I..." He coughs into his fist, clearing his throat and granting him precious seconds to regain his composure. No one should look like that, look at him like that. "I adopted Phoenix when he was 13. His father was an... employee and when he passed, his son required a guardian and I was looking for an heir. It worked out well, though I'm not certain Phoenix ever thought of me as a father figure, no matter the legalities."
Narise bites his lip, "That sounds complicated. But as someone who was adopted myself, I'm sure he's glad that someone was looking out for him at the very least." The way his teeth press into the plump pink of his lips makes Paek want to replace them with his own.
"Yes, well I'll let Phoenix have his own opinions on the matter."
Ryu and Narin's first real kiss that means something happens on their home island. During a break from touring and performing and recording, Narin takes Skyline home to the island for vacation while he visits Annop and his boyfriend. The rest of the brothers are supposed to be there the next week, but for this week it's just Annop, his boyfriend, Narin, Ryu and the rest of Skyline. While they have their own places to stay, having combined finances to buy a house next to Annop's to stay in when visiting, especially when Annop is there, they spend more time at Annop's place. Narin sends them all out onto the pier to play in the sea while he catches up with his brother and 'brother-in-law'. The topic turns as it often does when Narin gets a wistful look watching the others, to Ryu and how obviously in love with him Narin is. Narin refuses to acknowledge that. He doesn't fall for anyone, not anymore. He wouldn't survive it a second time. Annop frowns at him, until Narin repeats, what sounds to Annop's boyfriend like a mantra they've said a hundred times. that X(currently unnamed) and Y(currently unnamed) are dead and the others too scared to ever come near them. Annop tells him he needs to remember that and more importantly, Ryu is not X. Ryu would never do what X had done. Narin shouldn't let X ruin such a good thing when he's not even alive anymore. Narin is in love with a good man and it's obvious to everyone who gets to see them outside of their public roles.
Narin denies it, then stops the denials and goes with the 'even if' defense. Look at their career, and how he's perceived and how Ryu is and it just couldn't work. Annop points out that not only is Narin's cute reputation not the same as Ko's due to his more flirty personality which has resulted in lots of ships, but also he's a bl drama actor now, sure he's only done a couple things with acting. But he's kissing guys on the screen now, including Ryu. They've acted together already. The fans won't revolt at the idea of him having a boyfriend. Even the ones who don't ship Narin with Ryu will eventually understand. It'll be fine. Annop's boyfriend points out that they could explain it with their story. He may not know all the details but from what he does know, it's a slowly building relationship based on years of trust and care, both publically with their acting and music careers, and their private friendship behind the scenes that the public didn't get to see, that helped both of them. That kind of thing is a story an audience will eat up. They can give a few details of how it all happened and why and explain how long it took them and it'll smooth things out. And everything he can see says Ryu is into Narin too. Narin goes quiet and runs out to play with the others. But that night after they started to party and drink and the others were sufficiently distracted, they notice that Ryu isn't around and notice Narin slipping away too. So they quietly follow, just to see.
Narin wanders to look for Ryu only to find him at the edge of the dock, sitting and staring at the stars. "You can't see the stars like this in the city." He sits next to Ryu for a long, quiet moment, barely space for both their hands to be side by side between them. Then he slowly, hesitantly, moves his hand to cover Ryu's.
Ryu doesn't turn, doesn't acknowledge it. Though he feels the shift. There are no fans, no cameras, they're both barely tipsy. They don't have to get into character or blow off steam. This is a real moment between them. His only acknowledgement is to turn his hand so he can hold Narin's. They stay like that, staring at the stars until Narin carefully leans to rest his head against Ryu's shoulder.
Ryu gathers all his courage. Narin's laid on him, rested against him, slept on him or with him before in their years they've known each other. So even though he feels the difference here, it's still frightening to take a familiar moment into new territory. It's a risk, a gamble, but he takes it all the same.
He reaches around to gently place a hand on Narin's cheek, turning his head to Ryu and kisses him, just once, softly, not the heated kisses shared in dark hotel rooms after too much stress or alcohol or nightmares where they take comfort in each other. But one he pours all the love and devotion and care into. As they separate, he brushes Narin's hair back, staring at him with a fond look, kisses his forehead and returns to staring at the stars as he wraps an arm around Narin, holding him close to his side instead of just holding his hand. Narin curls into him, fitting close like he's always belonged there. Maybe he had.

"What if it was Daran?" Paek's voice bites through the air, bitter and angry.
Eryx steeples his ingers as he stares out the window into his garden, his desk chair only partially turned away from Paek, his desk covered in the documents he was reviewing when Paek had stormed in. He'd fallen behind during the search for Paek's boy and was oly now starting to catch up since Paek could easily handle the investigation without Eryx micromanaging the way he might if it was one of the kids or one of their lieutenats. His nieces and Phoenix shifted behind Paek, uncertain as to what Eryx would say and how Paek would react. "So that's how it is." His voice is calm and quiet, maybe a bit disappointed, he'd hoped Paek would get this out of his system and settle down with someone closer to his age, but if this was what it was.
"That's how it is" Paek answer, sharp and harsh and certain.
Eryx nods. "Very well then. I guess I'm left with no choice then." He stands and sees the nervousness enter Mali's frame. The kids have never seen this stillness from him. They've seen him in almost every mood, but this one he'd kept hidden from them, wanting them to see their father and uncle in the best light they could.
Paek nearly growls when Eryx stands, his eyes dark with rage, not at his brother, no never at Eyrx, he understood what Eryx meant. It wasn't the dismissal the kids thought, the threat that others might hear, no it was his brother clarifying that Narise held the same position to Paek that Daran held to him. It was Eryx making sure of exactly how serious he was about his younger lover before deciding how much support from the organization he can offer. So he watches silently as Eryx moves across the room to his bookcase and moves a book to reveal a hidden scanner which opens a small drawer where a pair of old style brass knuckles sat. A pair identical to the ones that currently sat in Paek's pocket, having been put away for nearly twenty years. They hadn't brought these out since The Incident. The night they'd finally had enough and conquered their way to the top of the underworld in one long, bloody night. "What's our first rule Phoenix?" Eryx called as he turns back to the group.
Phoenix answers promptly, they'd drilled these rules into the kids years ago. "Protect the family."
Eryx nods and places a hand on Paek's shoulder. "We protect the family. And the gods can't help those who would hurt the family." He squeezes and Paek reaches up to place his own hand over Eryx's and squeeze in return, the most gratitude he's capable of expressing right now. "It's your wife Paek. Your call. Two things first"
Paek looks at him quizzically. "Go get a certificate"
Paek almost manages a smile at that but he knows it's not just a personal request made out of a desire for his brother's happiness, but a business and political one. They always have to consider the men when doing these things. And it would be much easier for the men to support what they're about to do for a boss's spouse then someone seen as a boss's boytoy. "As soon as he graduates. I already booked the planner and photographer." Eryx nods. "Make sure that gets whispered about soon. The second thing. Bring the kids. It'll be good to harden them to the reality of what has to be done to protect each other and those we care for."
Paek nods, glancing over his shoulder. "The Santasakul's should be at the hospital with Narise by now. Text your brothers, tell them to meet us at the warehouse if they want in, but it'll be bloody. None of you have to come. I won't make you do that." He knows his kids are angry with him, that the relationship with Narise is something they are struggling with. With the exception of 16 year old Jade and 6 year old Sena, they're older than their father/uncle's boyfriend. He knows they aren't really ok with it yet.
Phoenix surprises him with a scoff. "I may not like the little brat. But attacking him was a way to get to you, and that's attacking all of us includinng me. Blood is the only reasonable response."
The response from Bua was more reasoned and measured, her and Kian were so alike. It was a toss up which would make the better leader, though Bua was more ruthless than Kian who had been tempered more by Daran's influence. "If we allow anyone to cross the group and walk away alive, just continue on, then we look weak and put a permanent target on our backs. The other groups expect punishment to be metted out by us, they'll be looking for it. We must be so thorough that not only do the other branches fall in line and the entirety of the black dragons and Delphinium group start behaving again, but we also have to be viscious enough to scare the other groups so no one will try this again."
Mali simply flips a knife she'd pulled from her ankle, one handed, perfectly balanced on her heels. "There's been whispers about why the Huntress came back home. Let's show them why."
Paek nods tight lipped in gratitude to his family. He slides the brass knuckles out of his pocket and slides them onto his fingers. "Let's get this done before Narise wakes. There's only a few hours before I get to bring him home." He turns to the door as Eryx fits his own set on his hands and falls into step beside him instead of in front as they push open the door.
Word had spread among the men of the dragons and many of them, even some of the old lieutenants who'd been around for the bloodbath of The Incident were there looking mostly bored until they caught sight of their boss and his right hand side by side with their kids behind them and those knuckles, they were easily recognized by those who'd seen them the last time. And that made the difference. He could see when recognition hit their eyes and they straightened, eyes hardening as they took in exactly how serious the two men took this kidnapping, even though they'd recovered Narise alive.
“And if I show you my dark side, will you still hold me tonight?”

I feel like a lot of people get "All Art is Political" confused with "All Art is made with Political Intentions" which is not the same.
Bonus: If I buy a book I get to keep it! The publisher can't turn up at my house at random and confiscate all the books I bought.
I think it was KA Applegate in Animorphs who had one of her technologically advanced aliens (Andalites my beloved) remark in astonishment to a human that we are such curious creatures because we think computers are better than books just because we invented computers second.
It feels like something that would appear in Animorphs. Then he went on that you can open a book to a page and the information is there instantly and unchangeably. He listed many strengths of books there. I haven't thought about this for years. I've always loved computers and books and I don't know that I fully agreed with Elfangor or Ax or whoever it was that said this then, but I totally get it now
It was Ax, in Book #8: The Alien: "Books are an amazing human invention. They allow instant access to information simply by turning pieces of paper. They are much faster to use than computers. Surprisingly, humans invented books before computers. They do many things backward."

h_yetao: i love u
Narise smiles as he folds his napkin as Paek finishes signing the bill and places it on the restaurant table. It was a quiet one, upscale and expensive. The type of place he could never afford to go to on his own. But since he'd met Paek, he'd been to places like this more than a few times and was slightly more comfortable. But this one was especially nice, it seemed fancier than the others, with less people around at other tables. only a few across the room had people. The ones around them had no one. But it was a weeknight. It had seemed like one of Paek's usual calls. Since they'd met, from time to time he'd call and invite Narise out and take him shopping, insisting on footing the bill for anything Narise wanted, they usually would go walking after, at a park or a musuem or art galleries, but their days out always ended with food. A dinner or a lunch or coffee and pasteries, always in a classy, expensive place. He had to call them days out, not dates. Because they weren't. Despite Paek asking him out, and paying for everything, and not allowing Narise to even get his wallet out, they weren't dates. Paek was perfectly mannered, perfectly decent, maybe a few subtle flirts or accidental touches, but that might just be Narise seeing things. Paek probably just enjoyed having someone outside his world to talk to. He never gave any indication that he wanted more. Until today, today had been different. It was just entering the winter season, which was usually only slightly cooler than the rest of the year, but it had been an unseasonably cold day. Paek had picked him up in a sports car instead of an SUV, though Narise could see it following them. He'd opened the door for Narise himself instead of one of his men who always seemed to be hovering. He'd offered his hand to assist as usual, but it seemed his grip lingered and withdrew more slowly, allowing his fingers to brush against Narise's. His smiles had seemed particularly soft and his voice had the warm tone that he only seemed to use when speaking to Narise, but it seemed a bit stronger, like buried embers glowing in the ashes of a fire as you start to stir it back to life. The last time he'd heard that edge was when Paek had given him orders when they were messing with the asshole who wouldn't back off when rejected, It'd been stronger then, this was much more restrained, barely there. He'd been touching Narise more too. They went to a fashion show. It was one Narise had been saving money to try and buy a ticket too but had failed to have enough before they sold out. He'd been so excited when he realized they were going to get to watch it that he'd smiled, and grabbed Paek's arm and bounced up to kiss his cheek before encouraging them both to hurry so they didn't miss anything. Paek had wrapped an arm around his waist to guide him through the crowd, looping Narise's arm through his to keep him close when they stopped to socialize, and a hand on the small of his back to direct him to their seats. When they left and stepped outside, Paek had taken off his own coat and settled it over Narise's shoulders, and adjusting it so it enveloped Narise in its warmth as they walked to the car.
He was always considerate like that. Watching out for Narise, anticipating his needs, keeping his health and comfort in the forefront of whatever they were doing. Even taking Narise to the illegal street race came with a guard assigned to monitor him in case he collapsed and a separate, limited access area with a lounge chair for him to rest. So it was probably just Paek being Paek, but Narise couldn't help how his heart skipped a beat as he looked over at Paek, who was standing and moving, before Narise could move himself, Paek was drawing the chair back and offering a hand to help Narise stand. Maybe he was worried that the Fashion show had been too much? Narise offers a fond smile and a soft squeeze before he releases Paek's hand. "Thank you. I am alright though. I've already promised to let you know if I start feeling faint or unwell. You've been so kind and attentive today. You don't have to go so out of your way to take care of me." Paek nods, "I do not need to, but I wish to." He didn't say more, simply picking up Narise's bag and guiding Narise with a hand on his back again all the way to the beautiful car they'd been driving around in today. He opens the door as he had all day and takes Narise's hand to help him in, but he doesn't move, his hand offering the slightest tug to hold Narise back from climbing in. Narise looks up into his eyes, those banked embers in his voice seemed to have climbed into his darkened eyes, whispering promises Narise wanted but knew would never be. the look lingers, Narise turned to face him, barely inches apart, surrounded by the car and Paek, a place some might find terrifying, but Narise had never felt safer. Yet there was a thrumming through his veins, his heart pounding in his chest as his lips part slightly and he tries to think, but coming up with words seemed impossible, swallowed up by the intensity of Paek's stare. Then slowly, hesitatingly, almost as though he was himself scared, or maybe not certain, or something else entirely, he raises Narise's hand to his lips and presses a long kiss to his knuckles, eyes locked onto Narise, studying every minuet detail of his reaction, the tiny gasp that was barely more than a breath, the way he almost stopped breathing entirely. Whatever he was looking for, he must have found, because he stopped Narise's breath entirely with his next move, stepping forward to press a hand to Narise's cheek, curling around his jaw to tenderly, softly hold his head as he presses a long, lingering, soft kiss to his lips. Narise melts into the kiss months in the making, his glossed lips sliding against Paek as the man presses forward, pinning Narise against the side of the car and deepening the kiss. Narise releases his hand to drape his arm around Paek's shoulders, his other hand coming to rest on Paek's chest, wrapping itself around a small handful of his jacket, as though he could by that small grip keep them in the moment forever. Paek wraps his free arm around Narise, tenderly pulling him closer as the kiss lingered on and slowly gentled before it ended softly, their foreheads pressed together as their breath mingled in the cold air, Paek's coat fluttering around Narise in the slight breeze, the chill no longer noticed by either man.
Paek turns his head ever so slightly. Narise can sense the tension in him returning, can guess the internal conflict, the age difference, the places they were in their lives and careers. Narise, a student starting to try to break into multiple public-facing industries and Paek a public CEO and behind the scenes, the right hand of the biggest mob in the city. It was a big difference. But Narise didn't care, he didn't care about the age gap or the jobs, sure the guns were intimidating and sometimes really scary, but he could learn to be ok because it was Paek, Paek who always made sure that he was safe before anything else and had since the first day they met. he lets go of his jacket to run his hand up Paek's chest until both arms were resting over his shoulders and he tilts his head enough for a quick peck, a soft, brief kiss to bring Paek back to the moment. "Don't go backing out on me now. You've kept me waiting months for that." His voice is low and soft and full of excitement. "I shouldn't...This isn't smart. You should walk away now, before you end up wrapped up in my life. You don't know how dark it can get." It wasn't the conflict that Narise had thought he'd hear, there's a certainty. The tone of a man who decided this was what he wanted and what he was going to have and giving Narise one last chance to run. Narise should, he really should-- but he doesn't. He leans up, brushing a breath against his lips before rocking back down and returning to the sweet embrace his forehead still pressed against Paek. "So show me. Let me into your world. Show me all of you and let me show you I won't run." He felt it in his bones, there'd be time for flirting and dramatics and teasing as they negotiated their way to more. But this moment was important, this moment demanded sincerity in every word. He'd tease Paek about his age and job, he'd flirt and snap back and have all the dramatics and fun later, but this pure moment was only honesty, Narise letting Paek know that Narise had made up his mind as well. Paek tightens his arms around Narise and kisses him again, just as sweetly. "Then be prepared, because like hell will I let you go now." He presses forward, his kiss becoming desperate, hungry, but no less skilled as he coaxed Narise, kissing him until there was no room, for thought in his mind. When he finally pulls away, Narise sags slightly against the car as he catches his breath. His tongue flicks against red, swollen lips as he chases the taste of Paek left behind. Paek's eyes were dark and the burning embers in his eyes and his voice glowed brighter with promise and desire.
