i made a choice.

   “It’s probably a jawa, and I don’t mean to judge a book by its cover but it’s probably not especially friendly.” Ugh, that sticks a little in their throat. They’ve got an itch at the back of their head now that won’t be scratched until they make prejudicial amends to the jawa community.

Best move on, physically and literally. Ken hikes their collar up to keep sand from their gums and hooks their elbow under Finn’s. “I’m with you, but don’t try looking like you’re in a hurry. They’ll just mark you as a weakling and try to tourist trap you in town.”

finn keeps at their side, keeps moving, but his feet are dragging a little. he can’t help it, he can’t help it! it’s too easy to keep looking over his shoulder, and he’s certain that it’s not a jawa. what it actually is he’s not too concerned with, whether or not it can do any harm? well that’s much more of interest.

the glass clanks down against the metal grated table. thor can’t seem to block out the persistent hum of the ship from the periphery of their focus – enhanced hearing makes it like an unscratchable itch. the god shifts in place, unsure of themself, ‘til finally coming to a rest, voice considerably more relaxed than their faux-laid back posture. they speak slow and nod pointedly; ’you’re a resistance rebel, then?’ and the intonation implies their complete lack of understanding of what any part of this title means.

  ‘ ken, hey ken, i don’t like the way this thing is looking at me. ’ he’s pointing without subtlety at the only thing around that isn’t made up of sand, a head? with one big pair of blinking red eyes. ‘ i don’t even know what the hell it is, but i don’t like it.

‘ you have to tell me everything. ’ 

    there’s enough space in the booth’s half circle for the two of them to sit apart, but he’s crowding her in spite of that. his elbows are propped on the chess table and his chin propped up on his hands. 

She doesn’t quite know what thing she’s proud of him for – everything, of course, but within everything is a lot of little things about Finn, and it’s a swell in her chest to think of all of them at once. “Dinner is soon – doesn’t that seem crazy? Just having dinner.” In a canteen, with a hundred people, a hundred knives and forks. She wrinkles her nose. “I was thinking of taking a plate and going somewhere quiet, if that exists.”

     “You can say if they’re bad.”

     In an effort to give Finn something to eat that contains neither the word protein nor scramble, Poe has been slaving over a hot skillet for the last two hours trying to work up a perfect stack of pancakes. The stack he finally put together is far from perfect – they’re lumpy, misshapen and kind of pathetic – but it’s the best he can do, and he’s kind of proud. He’d slapped the plate in front of Finn with the effects of that pride stapled on his face as a broad grin, eyes crinkled at the corners, only now there’s no pride, just apprehension. He chews his lip.

     “I won’t be offended. I promise.” 

   finn’s not a connoisseur of pancakes, or a connoisseur of food in general. you’d think that’d add up to make him an easy critic, but the stack still seems wrong looking despite the effort, and the texture ( really really chewy ) can’t be intentional. it takes him a whole minute to swallow one bite, though he looks up with a non-committal lopsided smile in the end. more than anything he’s hungry. hunger can make anything taste...fine.
