“Oh!” A chorus of rustling, muffed clangs and boots scurrying around on carpet erupt from behind the door. She’s gathering the last of her things, shoving the smaller, last-minute articles into her pin-striped, chunky backpack—chips and a pack of hot dogs, a small pan, a lighter. There’s a blanket in there. This is totally traveling light. “Just a sec!” 

 She knew he’d be punctual, not so much out of caring for deadlines as the fact that he could meet them without trying. He could’ve spent most of the ten minutes before he got here napping and still been here before she knew it.

The door swings open, putting them face to face in her apartment doorway at last. The duffle bag is over her shoulder and the keyring dangling off her pinky is adorned with almost as many aggressively cute bird and cupcake keychains as there are actual keys.

“Look at you!” Amy grins, eyeing his humble pack. Small, entirely unencumbering. He can’t have had much trouble trimming the fat.  Very Sonic. She, meanwhile, had to talk herself out of digging out her duffle bag. She gets caught up in ideas.  “You’re all prepared. Still just you and me, huh?” She’d wondered if Tails would tag along, she admits—and as she likes Tails quite a lot, she wouldn’t have minded. 

 It’s not like she’s complaining either, though.

He figured she’d probably have a bigger bad than him, but for what it’s worth, it could certainly be bigger! She’d definitely made concessions, if he knows as much about her as he thinks he does. Chuckling at her comment on his supplies, he gives an overly dramatic bow before raising his head, holding both straps of the bag as he shimmies it back up a bit, shoulders jostling.

“Eeyup. Figure it’s your plans, so I wouldn’t wanna drop an unexpected addition on ya’ without warning. Besides, some game Tails has been waitin’ on dropped this weekend, so there’s no way I’m seeing him come out of his room for at least the next three days.”

❝ i always have people chasing after me~ ❞ she answers, metal soles moving over the other in graceful movements as the bat settles near the blue hedgehog. she leans in, pressing a gloved finger just under his muzzle as she smiles sweetly.

❝ i’ve never been one to shy away from danger, interested in chasing me, big blue? i’m more skilled with speedster then you might realize~ ❞ she speaks out in a sultry tone, clearly just trying to tease the hero. she knows better that her charm doesn’t really work on the guy, but it never hurts to just have fun anyway. someday she’ll find his buttons.

“Fair, fair.” He nods, and would have continued to, if she didn’t have his face in her hand. Moving now would just be rude, wouldn’t it? Hopefully she’s looking at his good side, at least. He exhales slightly from his nose, a small chuckle at the implication. Speedster, huh? Must be referring to Shadow, he’s assuming?

“Well, I guess you have a point there...but I wouldn’t count on the similarity being exact, y’know? Being the fastest is my brand, after all.” He’s sure, were Shadow around, that would constitute some kind of challenge to prove it, but seeing as the hedgehog’s nowhere to be seen, it’s safe to say that would have to wait.

Look at him. Look at his face. He’s great when he’s on top of things, but he’s adorable when he’s awkward. She’s always somewhat reluctant to let go of him in the moments he accepts her touching and cuddling, but she does let him have his hands back. He’s made a good point; they should take supplies. Who knows where they’ll end up?

Amy presses her knuckles to her chin, furrowing her brow. “Right! Camera, definitely. Food, probably a tent—” But whatever the rest of that list might have included, she’s already waving it away before she’s finished it. “Aw, probably just that, right? We’ll travel light and make stops.”

She seems satisfied with this for now; she bounces bracingly on her heels, plants her hands on her hips, and winks at him for good measure.

“Rendezvous at my place then, okay? And don’t be late!”

“Sounds like a plan! I’ll be as punctual as can be.” 

He nods, some semblance of confidence returning to his expression once he grins in response. It did a better job conveying a cool demeanor, than before. Which is good! It certainly leaves a better lasting impression for her to dwell on in the in-between, because once it’s actually come time for him to follow-up? He’s right back to feeling lightly tense as soon as he’s knocked on the door.

He’d had to let Tails know that he’d be away, of course, and that went pretty predictably. He’d asked where Sonic was headed, Sonic wasn’t about to lie, and Tails gave him the look. The kind with raised eyebrows and a cheeky smile that practically screamed ‘With Amy, you say?’ without actually having to say a word. Sheesh.

Either way, though, he’s good and ready. He packed light, like he was told, so all he really has with him is a small brown backpack slung around his shoulder, which is currently hanging off just slightly. He used to carry this around for recon stuff when he was younger, made him feel cool and rugged -- now it’s just kind of funny to think about.

“Oooh, I knew you’d say that!” Aaand the lid’s popped; Amy bounces up on one heel and reaches to clasp his hands eagerly in hers. Her smile gleams from ear to ear. A much needed vacation is one thing. A vacation with a plus one is another. A vacation with Sonic was—!

 “Adventure it is! You and me!”

“A! S! A! P!”

Yep, there’s the high spirits he’d come to expect from her. He’d be lying if he said seeing her brighten like this wasn’t part of his motive in offering, but that definitely didn’t encompass it all either. After all, Sonic wasn’t so cruel as to just pull out a suggestion like this for the sake of simply humoring her, he did genuinely enjoy spending time with her, even if he had an awkward time saying as much.

His back straightened slightly as her hands clapped to his own, and his usually confident grin wavered a bit into that of a more sheepish smile. “Soon as you give the word, then, I s’pose? Just make sure not to forget anything you’ll wanna bring along.”

As silly as it might seem to some, I really do like digging into this little dude’s emotions, especially more than Sega will ever deign to do. Like? For example, I think Adventure 1-2 are an extremely formative time for him emotionally, like -- Eggman had always been a threat before, but it was only in seeing the sheer damage and catastrophe and death that he brought through angering Chaos (there’s no way you can tell me hundreds didn’t drown in Station Square, I’m sorry) that he realized he wasn’t just some kid playing around on a high stakes adventure anymore - if he was going to call himself a hero he had some serious responsibilities to face. Responsibilities that would inevitably lead him to face tragedy, loss and - yeah, a lot of death that he’s going to, at times, feel responsible for not preventing.

well shit. that’s very true. the black hedgehog remained stiff in his spot, his arm still out reached into the fridge while his other hand kept the door open. ruby eyes met with emerald and shadow quietly swallowed as he thought of how he could properly explain exactly what he was doing.

❛ i needed a fridge. ❜ he answers. yeah, very vague, that tells a lot. he mentally smacks himself in the face. he let out a growl as his hand lets go of the cylinder and he quickly shuts the fridge, shifting to lean against it as he crosses his arms.

❛ go back to sleep, it is not a big deal. ❜

yeah that was reassuring. 

Of all the things he might have said. Geez, it’s not like Sonic expected an A+ excuse, but this was really lazy, wasn’t it? He groans slightly, complexion still groggy but showing no sign of leaving things be, either. He places a hand on his hip, foot tapping against the floor.

“Uh-huh...you don’t have your own? Need to store your ice cream, or somethin’? Because I don’t see you holdin’ anything.” 

At that, he squints a bit, tries to peer around Shadow. There’s not anything here, right? He’s not hiding anything? Then he straightens up a bit, points at the other hedgehog.

Sonic’s brows knit. He knows where this line of discussion is going, and at the risk of sounding somewhat rude, he’s going to cut in before it goes any further.

“So what-- I should just leave ya’ all alone? Man, screw that! ...I know what you’re gonna say, that we’re all better off, and that we’ll regret gettin’ involved when something goes wrong. But who’s to say it’s gonna?” His hands clasp tight, and his eyes burn with a sort of certainty.
