I may end up liking Greenhill/Yang. I keep thinking about how much more development we’re getting of Reinhard and Hilda’s relationship, but it isn’t just the author neglecting Yang’s personal life. The situations are different. Reinhard really needs a confidant who isn’t Oberstein, lol, he needs someone he can open up to and rely on. Because he’s actually a very intense, passionate person, capable of loving only a few, but loving those few deeply. Reinhard and Hilda are also equals, like Reinhard and Kircheis were. Yes he’s still the absolute monarch, but he’s never once held that over her like he does with others. She approached him to make an alliance, and it seems possible she can break through to him and become his empress. I could see it anyway. But Yang, on the other hand, keeps everyone at a distance. I keep getting the impression that like Reinhard, he’s intensely lonely, but he’s not cracking under any pressure. He’s like George Orr basically: wholeness to his core. He’s strong and doesn’t need anything. He’s self-sacrificing by keeping people away, and can go on doing that, but for him to have any kind of relationship where he receives care, Greenhill is gonna have to take a more proactive role in becoming his lover… Like, Julian was doing a lot for Yang, but ultimately he was still his ward—Yang was responsible for him, and I never once saw him lay all his emotional burdens on the kid. But the issue is, Greenhill is Yang’s subordinate, and I think he’s trying to keep professional distance between them; and despite the fact that she has feelings for him, she’s doing the same. If they are gonna end up together, tho, I hope they will turn more into a partnership, because rn, I don’t have much reason to want them together, tho I think they could be a good couple. For all I know, they won’t ever get together and Yang is just doomed to be alone, lol
