me, wracking my brain for different builds I might want to swap to (homebrew was a bit too good, so I elected to swap to a main book one): “how badly do we actually need a support?”

cause there’s like so many different things my team could use. The team has two different CQB fighters and a sniper, so my options are a defender, a support, a controller, or a second artillery

(for context the party rn is a viceroy, a hecatonchire, a death’s head, and me. I’m really looking for something that fills a niche while also being something I want to play and it’s been a struggle lol)

the iskander is funny because at a first glance it seems like one of the more basic mechs in the game. Like, oh wow you have mines and grenades? Cool I guess. But then you start reading the frame lore and the different gravtech systems and you realize just how fucked up the think tank is lmao.

something that lancer doesn’t get enough credit for is the fact that it makes supporting feel good. Like, there’s not a lot of outright support abilities in the game, and maybe that helps this feeling, but I’ve never met a Lancaster pilot who hasn’t walked away from a session feeling incredible about their party role.

The thing is that it's incredibly difficult to fuck up being a Lancaster pilot. That's not to say there isn't an incredible amount of skill that goes into doing it well, but the utility floor on the Lancaster is such that you can basically do shit all for an entire combat and so long as you don't straight up die, you're still providing value to the team via giving them a shared Repair pool.

Add to that the incredible utility of the battle taxi and you're laughing

I think your assessment is right: because there really aren't many full on support abilities, it really helps those in the support role shine. Lanny is the only frame that can heal others, and keeping your main Dps up in a fight feels great in a system where you're getting hit more often than not.

I also think Lancer does an amazing job at rewarding teamwork. The way it allows control to set up enemies into vulnerable positions, or strip away defenses (looking at you swallow tail), for your more dps oriented characters to wreck havoc is not something I've really seen much of in other positioning heavy combat games. My players, using teamwork, have more than once trivialized a fight that a different all DPS group had trouble with.

And each time this happened, the support player that made it happen got a ton of credit and really got to shine in a way that my cleric in Pathfinder never really got to.

IMO that feeling of setting up for a sitrep in such a way that you absolutely destroy your DM’s plans for a challenging combat is so satisfying. My current squad in a campaign I’m in has a lot of tech abilities that set up “enter and you take damage” AOEs, so we’ve devised a strategy of setting up these AOEs in a way that funnels the enemies straight into the DPS while our death’s head picks off everybody from a distance.

i got into this ttrpg because i was enamoured by tokugawa in particular. i like the concept of being able to rip people apart while also teetering on the brink of death the entire time.

although, after several hours of build crafting for fun, i think the rabid nature of enkidu is calling to me a little more

There are exactly two types of lancer players when ranking the mechs on a tier list. Tokugawa in S and Goblin in F, and Goblin in S and Tokugawa in F. I think both are exceptionally based choices.

Zheng! The flavour with Zhong Xiaoli goes so hard, the frame core passive is extremely fun even without popping the active, and the license systems are so damn good. The D/D-288 isn't very good and it does not matter even slightly because it goes stupid hard.

BIG SAL.

A big old wall on legs built around as many defensive/supportive abilities as it could fit on its oversized frame. This thing is a walking shield for itself and its allies and its pilots are near universally liked.

I say near universally because John Creighton Harrison the 1st was a Saladin pilot. A fact I find very funny.

Being a defender main is a pathway to abilities that many find… unnatural. Such as having free bar tabs at the end of the night. But yeah, John Harrison Armory sure was a Saladin pilot, which is quite funny to think about.
