I like knights

The toast pops up and the more present matter of food replaces any aches with hunger pains. He gets right to spreading a hefty helping of jelly to make himself a Purple Sandwich (toast with grape jelly on every surface, it’s a little difficult to eat but it’s really tasty and really sweet).

Back to that dream, anyway. It was one of the ones in third person, but your brain tells you that the person you’re looking at is you, so you can’t much argue with it. It felt like it was back in Minecraft, but Avery wasn’t wearing his iconic slime skin so it wasn’t really in the game, but like. Felt close enough. He was also super duper short, which he isn’t in real life, and it was on that creepy platform in the void that had all those eyeballs surrounding it. There wasn’t any eyeballs this time, though, just emptiness.

When he tried to move, it felt like the air was made of cheesecake, and that left a weird clumpy feeling on his dream-self’s body, but it’s not like he was slime. Or maybe he was supposed to be slime? He just looked like a regular person though, just ant sized.

Avery chomps down on his sandwich as he wanders out of the little kitchen of his moderately sized apartment. He sits on the couch, having a hard time keeping his eyes open as he slumps into the cushion.

The dream, Avery. The dream.

…Yeah, he dreamed last night. He doesn’t focus on remembering dreams that much, though..?

But this one was odd. Yadda yadda platform, yadda yadda short, and… There was someone there with him. When it actually happened, D3rlord was with him, but in the dream, it was someone different. Something different. Something giant. And, truthfully, beautiful.

Maybe Avery wasn’t tiny in this dream and instead this… entity? Was just monstrously tall. It was blinding with an aura of gold. But not pure gold, just a stained gold. Yellow with red encapsulating every moment, trapping it and caging it within that scarlet prison.  That’s just all the poetic feeling from the dream though, stuff Avery can barely remember.  The look of the thing is what he got to see.

It wasn’t a knight, wasn’t a king, but still wore both armor and a crown; Golden gauntlets, pauldrons, a helmet framed by upwards reaching claws, and a bleeding star in the middle of its chest. There was a ribcage that held the star and its blood, though a strong form as dark as void hid underneath. This thing even had wings, two pairs, to emphasize an angelic feel, and a cloak flowing from the shoulders to bring forth the conflicting ideals of royalty and a hero’s servitude. Avery couldn’t see its feet, just a shifting wall of fabric that seemed to eat the ground underneath it. He thinks it was looking at him though.

Avery licks his fingers clean, but he almost bites into one of them as his head jolts forward. It’s a sign of exhaustion, but he just woke up, he doesn’t know why he’s moments away from passing out again. Has he got work? Something is coming up, surely. He can’t just… Sleep a day away. And he won’t do that.  Buuuut, he can spend a couple extra moments with his eyes closed and trying to picture the strange thing from his dream. It felt so special. It was all in his head but still it felt so real.

He can almost see it right now, behind his eyelids. The deity. Something magical and powerful and wearing such a specific knight helmet-slash-crown thingie, even the red false hair stringing from the top is reminding him of something. Someone.

“Avery,” It growls like it’s trying to whisper. Yet there’s no mouth to move, and even if there was it would be covered up by the handful of wings sprouted on its face. He hadn’t noticed that in the dream. “Avery.” It repeats, with more force and urgency. The man only grunts in response. To make matters worse, he opens his eyes with the dumbest little smile spread on his lips.  The red and yellow thing with wings is real nice to think about. Weird! But makes his heart happy. Some kind of guardian sleep angel, maybe? That would be pretty funny.

For some reason, Avery feels like he’s being watched. Not only does he feel like he’s being watched, but also like someone is frowning at him and really, really trying to figure things out. Something stuck on a puzzle.

Genuinely, if Avery would just focus and go turn on his computer and open Minecraft real quick, this would go so much quicker.

He blinks at that. He can go open his laptop and play a bit in the morning, should be fine, shouldn’t make him late for anything. He wipes his hands off before he cracks open the computer and opens the game like he’s sleep-walking. Avery hasn’t played in a minute. About… 2 weeks? or something like that? Not since…………

Ah. D3rlord wouldn’t have happened to log back in, would he?

Click click click, blah blah blah, Avery has been using this computer still but hasn’t thought to open Minecraft again (truthfully, he hasn’t had the courage, but that’s a side tangent). He taps his finger lightly against the mouse as he waits for the server to load. He could have picked any world, sure, but for the sake of it, he opened the one from 2 and a half weeks ago that was supposed to be solo but wasn’t really solo. And he holds his breath.

Though nothing happens. It’s just Minecraft. It’s not like the screen was going to go dark, then flicker yellow, and the entire table was about to shake and the air go cold as his laptop screen slams backwards on its own like a snapped neck and something was going to crawl out of it!

No, no, that doesn’t happen. He waits three seconds and then the screen flickers red, not yellow, and all the previously mentioned things happen, along with Avery falling out of his chair with a panicked yelp.

It’s frankly quite terrifying when a shining, glittering hand reaches up from the screen, dripping an inky ichor over his keyboard and desk. A second pierces through and they work together to start pulling something from the screen. Maybe Avery should be expected to scream more, seeing something like this, but he’s frozen. Dead silent as he sees the same beast-god-thing that met him in his dream last night and sat behind his eyes. And it’s a long shot, but as the being, draped in a red and yellow cape, pulls itself halfway through, Avery speaks to it.

“Derek?” ('Tries speaking to it', more accurately. It’s kinda just a croak. He’s still a bit scared, cuz this thing is quite big and now some of the wings are visible.)

The golden helmet snaps towards him, framed by beautiful black feathers and an almost transparent veil. There’s no eyes, but it stares. Unbothered, patient, and mostly concerned about getting its hips through the laptop screen. Though it’s not really an “it”. This is a “he”, what with the armor and the whole Minecraft connection… It’s got to be “him”, right?

Avery blinks as he hears a voice speaking warmly in his own head.

“Hello again, friend.”

It’s one he’s never heard before, but really wished he had.

Avery stumbles just a little as he stands, leaning against his crooked chair as he takes in the situation. Derek(??) has left the laptop fully, but bends awkwardly with his shoulders against the ceiling, having to tilt and curl his wings to try and fit in here. Avery is clueless as to what he’s supposed to say, so all he does is step closer and lift his arm. He’s working on pure instinct, but his gut feeling seems to be right, because Derek leans down further, metal coated hands twitching as he slowly accepts the odd embrace. Avery was really just reaching for his shoulders, aiming for a hug of some kind, though he misses his target and presses his palms to the cold— er— warm helmet that Derek wears. The wings framing his face stretch for a moment before curling up to cover the darkness behind shimmering metal.

“It’s you.”

Avery hears a chuckle from his mouth that doesn’t sound like his own.

“Close enough.”

He grimaces slightly, embarrassed by the repeat of the first time. He can just mark it off as deja-vu (despite it not being the proper use of the phrase) and find comfort in having his friend here in some way, shape, or form.

Now he’ll actually get the chance to know him. Ask the billion questions that have been eating him up inside. And also probably how this ended up happening in the first place. He can’t find the words for any of that at the moment, so he just laughs, normally this time, and basks in the unusual feeling of having a king in his room.

There’s the quiet whisper that this is no king, this is a lord, and he thinks himself better than any shade of idiot piss. But that’s kinda weird, isn’t it? Avery didn’t think that on his own.

His hands feel sticky. His hands look… Green. He tries to blink it away, but Avery skin is shifting into patchy shades of green wherever he touches Derek, and when he tries to pull back, his fingers stretch like goo.

“Uhh… Ah, hah, um, Derek, do.. You know what’s going on?” He’s thankful that it doesn’t hurt, but every movement is making his body melt more. Avery goes stiff when he feels solid hands press onto his back, and while he expected them to help, they make his balance sway. His spine feels like it’s disintegrating, though there’s no pain still, just feelings and textures of turning into slime. Avery forces his attention back onto Derek’s face just in time to see the wings droop. It’s unclear whether it’s pity, shame, or some secret third thing.

“Derek is still dead. I’m what’s left,” A ginormous power speaks inside Avery’s skull, “I’m sorry. But you should open Minecraft. Really.”

By now, Avery is just slime. Nothing solid, falling through D3rlord’s fingers, but there’s nothing to it when he drips onto the ground and gasps, clenching his sticky fingers together. He’s sitting on the couch, fully intact, completely fine, and human. Avery balls his hands into fists again. He’s sticky because of grape jelly, though his chest is heaving from some extremely off putting dream.
