Upper-Intermediate / Lesson 21: -์น๊ณ
์๋ ํ์ธ์! Hey everyone! Today weโre starting Level 11 off with a rather simple but in my opinion kind of advanced grammar structure: -์น๊ณ . Letโs start!
What is -์น๊ณ ?
You probably often hear sentences like these:ย
For a basketball player, heโs pretty short.ย
She speaks Korean really well considering that sheโs self taught.ย
He reads well for a five-year old.ย
These sentences express that, compared to some standard, one particular person/thing deviates from that standard. For instance, we expect basketball players to be very tall, but when we see a player under 6 feet, we call thatย โshort for a basketball player.โ Unlike other players, that one player deviates from the norm or from our expectations.
Also, we use this when weโre talking about a specific standard rather than speaking generally. 5โฒ11 isnโt short at all in general, but in the realm of basketball players it is.ย
If you want to say this sort of thing in Korean, use -์น๊ณ ! Attach it to the noun that in English we would addย โfor aโ in front of. For example:
๋๊ตฌ์ ์์น๊ณ ํค๊ฐ ์์์. = For a basketball player, heโs short.
๋ ํ์ผ๋ก ๋ฐฐ์ด ์ฌ๋์น๊ณ ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ๋๊ฒ ์ํด์. = For someone whoโs self-taught, she speaks Korean really well.
5์ด ์์ด์น๊ณ ์ ์ฝ์ด์. = He reads well for a five-year-old.
๋์์ด๋ ๋๋ ์ค์น๊ณ ๊ฝค ์ธ๋ค์. = Thatโs pretty cheap for a designer dress.
๋ด์ฅ์์ ๊ฒจ์ธ์น๊ณ 15๋ ๋๊ฒ ๋ฐ๋ปํด์. = 15 degrees Celsius is really warm for winter in New York.
์๋์์น๊ณ ๊ณต๋ถ๋ฅผ ์ด์ฌํ ์ ํ๋๋ฐ์. = Considering that sheโs a med student, she doesnโt study that hard.
So thatโs pretty much it for -์น๊ณ ! Hope this was helpful! ๋ค์์ ๋ ๋ด์!
