The way TIMs talk about GNC men always makes me think of that “oh shit, another faker” Fight Club scene (where the narrator has been attending support groups for hardships he’s never experienced, pretending to relate to people’s suffering, and when he realizes another person is doing the same, he gets angry at her because the presence of another faker is ruining “the one real thing” in his life).
I think for many TIMs, their worst fear is being seen for what they are, by themselves or by others. When they see other males playacting as caricatures of women, they panic a little because their similarities are too obvious, the falsehood is too recognizable.
Their stated goal is just “allow everyone to be their authentic selves,” but the true goal is the opposite—it’s to immerse themselves in the pretense of being someone else. Talking openly about this pretense, as drag queens do, is more authentic, but the authenticity of admitting to being a faker is what makes it so threatening to the men who are getting an emotional release from the illusion of authenticity.
I found it baffling for a long time that TIMs get so angry at women who say “it’s ok for male people to take estrogen and act feminine, I don’t think you should be treated any worse for that, I’ll support your right to do what you want with your body, I am just not going to pretend we’re the same sex.” Why would someone hate me so much for supporting them for what they actually are?
But it’s the equivalent of saying “it’s ok if you guys want to attend this support group despite not having prostate cancer. You’re welcome to show up anyway!” Because they do not want to be accepted for who they are, they want to be accepted as someone they’re not. Keeping up the appearance of being something they’re not is the whole point.
