He speaks as if he doesn't know. Ike can see them in his mind's eye, desperately pleading with this powerful stranger to fetch Ike. Maybe Ike can be saved. Maybe if he just came home—
He's too far gone. Every day, it becomes more and more difficult to keep himself, and to wrangle the beast that is now Ike. He knows one day he won't exist, and his grip on himself is too loose to do anything about that. He's scared, but he can't show it.
He especially won't show this man.
"You know." The word is spat at him. The ice around Ike begins to break. "My family."
The thin thread of himself tries to hold the beast back. Realistically, if this man knows the Greil Mercenaries, surely he's an ally. Surely he's one of them. That doesn't calm Ike down.
"I won't go back. I won't!" His body breaks free from the ice. His arm feels stiff, but that doesn't stop Ike. He closes the distance between them again. It's almost effortless, the way he jabs his sword into the stranger's stomach. If Ike can kill him, he can be free. He will never have to worry again. He can let go of the faint grip he has on reality.
His family? Which family? Do they hunt Ike to hurt him, or—
cw: mild gore
Not that it matters, because Bruno is too slow in his response when Ike charges. The brief moment of hesitation is all it takes for Ike's sword to slide clean through his gut: the cold of the metal graces him first, followed by pressure — overwhelming as blood seeps out of the wound, as it saps his breath into shallowness.
This is different from his first death, he thinks — because during his first death, there was the crackle of rib and the sudden sting of suffocation that graced him as the sword pierced lung, not present here as the sword only finds supple flesh; because during his first death, he had been the one who needed saving, not the other way around. ( is this why you force your eyes to remain open — because the guilt of failing him again is not something you can bear in death? )
There are two options here:
The first, that the blade comes out. Through the growing haze of thought, he can see it: he will spill out alongside the blade's exit, blood and torn organs pouring with his collapse and eventual impact onto the ground. A corpse to be left in the fields, blood to water the next season's flowers. A faster death, but—
( and again, you cannot help him. ) —he blinks the spots out of his vision; he forces the white noise out of his hearing, and tries to think of birdsong in the distance.
The second, that he keeps the sword in. It will stop him from bleeding out; it will hold him in. All that collects in his hands is static: numbing as his glove wraps itself around the blade, fingers no longer feeling as they squeeze and bleed crimson. He hisses, ice collecting in his palm as it creeps along the sword and onto his own abdomen, numbing pain with frost.
"You don't... have to." He does not think he can hold himself up any longer, but he will try, as he forces out, "You have family here, Ike, that will," he winces, tome falling onto the grass, "not hurt you."
Well, of course the church would. Tsubaki isn't the guilty party, after all. Tsubaki patiently listens to Bruno, unblinking.
"You're my responsibility." The sky knight says, bluntly. "So long as you're under my watch, I will see through your reformation with aplomb. The church entrusted me with that much. Therefore, I have no intention on handing you off to someone else, nor do I harbor any desire for dishonesty."
Tsubaki's tone carries an odd flatness to it; as if that much should be obvious. How silly that his partner had thought otherwise. There was no task impossible enough for Tsubaki to humor the idea of quitting.
"Which of the three do you think~?" Tsubaki echoes back, "You've spoken so much on my behalf already, so how about you answer this for me, too? Don't stop now-- Maybe if you dissect enough of me, you'll acquire second-hand knowledge what it means to be a perfect role-model~? Haha."
His eyes crinkle into smiling crescents. He doesn't stop Bruno from prying. "Are you some kind of genius~?"
He takes the compliment in grace with a hollow chuckle. "How did you know? My belief is that it is all of the three." And a fourth, Bruno thinks, an adoration for being insufferable.
The more he pries, the more it seems that their hands are truly unable to separate. There is no amount of digging or scratching that will work, but he cannot give up so easily now — so he keeps trying regardless, glove wriggling its way into a crevice that will not expand.
But if escape does not work, then Bruno will pretend. Pretend to be what? Good? Righteous? Holy? A pause, and the thought escapes his lips: "What does reformed mean to you?" Frustration does not hide as he snarks ( perhaps, now, as-expected ), "Complete obedience to you and the church? Turning myself into you, the," he takes on the lilt of the other man's voice, "perfect role-model~?"
So he says, yet it is Bruno. "If I catch word of you having been injured." Darios pauses to make the frown such news would result in. He trusts, but there will always be worry.
When the mask comes off, when Zacharias finally peeks from behind it, such frown is wiped away and Darios gladly keeps gleaming violet gaze with his own. "Let's continue caring for each other," he says softly. He lingers in Zacharias' hold for a moment before sitting down at the edge of his bed.
The day was still quite young...but the excuse he'd used to have his class looked after didn't match well with him going out to spend this sudden free time well. "I'm truly glad to have you at my side... though I assume you must return to your duties of closing the orbs down?"
He hums. "It will not happen, especially since you have willed it as such." Even if he is not wholly certain — "That, I know."
Zacharias sets his mask aside on a nearby desk, shaking his head. "Such menial tasks can always wait." There are many of him out there — but there is only one Darios, who is glad to have him around. Such grace is not to be taken for granted, so he takes his spot next to Darios, hands reaching to latch on around his waist in an embrace.
"Let me just stay here." Then, he echoes, "Let us always continue caring for each other."
"I'II not tell you that I'd not lament it." His thumbs tease at the bottom of the mask. A small lift makes it seem likely it'll go elsewhere yet it stays as it was. "But I would not force you to tell me, nor fault that you didn't."
Darios's eyes fall and he sighs once more. "So long as you are safe? That is what matters most to me."
"I will be," he murmurs — hopefully, it will bring relief to Darios. "There is no need for you to worry; what I am doing will not bring danger my way."
His hands trail upwards, sliding under the gap that Darios had created between mask and skin. Off the mask goes, and Zacharias' eyes gleam with warm admiration at his sole prince. There is no need for Darios' gaze to falter in such a manner; he will ensure that his own uncertainty becomes certain.
"Thank you." Spoken in a low hum, gentle as a hand returns atop the back of Darios'. "I know you would not force, but..." he hesitates; no, he could not take advantage of such trust, "...also know that I will do what I can, such that you do not lament."

Maybe he should not be glad. For Zacharias to have a mission like this, a purpose he takes the lead in, it is a good thing. Even if Darios would like to know more, he won't force such things out. It is simply that...
"I'm reminded of when we first met. When you were so impassioned that you'd have moved me out of the way yourself had you lacked the manners to wait." It is a memory he holds fondly now even as the look in Bruno's eyes, the manner of Bruno's words, told of a man who was too focused upon a single thing. "I don't want you to lose yourself in it," all the more with matters pertaining to home.
"When you feel yourself ready, I'd like to know." Always, he would like to know more but they have a lifetime if not several to spend on unlocking such answers. "You don't have to keep things from me."
He doesn't know. The truth is tucked too far within for it to come out comfortably; he is left only holding onto Darios' hands, as if they are a tether to reality — the last foothold that grounds him in warmth and belonging and trust.
"One day, perhaps." Because he still thinks of it — ice that collides with its mirror in mid-air, a thought that will stain memory for eternal lifetime. One day, perhaps, could hold empty meaning; it could be never, perhaps, but he will try. At the very least, he can admit, "I am uncertain if I will ever be ready. If that happens, would you... accept such a fact?"
His hands move to hold Bruno's face. The mask stays as it is and yet fingers tread the underside of his jawline and the palm of his thumbs rest under the apples of Bruno's cheeks. Darios stares for a moment and takes one breath then another.
The sigh he lets out is concerned and silver eyes are filled with guilt. All this time he's been doing so? "So long as you've not been alone. You've been eating well between and taking proper breaks correct? If every time it requires you to say such an incantation, you should keep hydrated as well."
He holds Darios' wrists in his own hands, cradling them gently. Why was he expecting the worst — to be greeted with judgement and nails that pried for answers he wanted held close to his chest? Instead, he is greeted by understanding and care, and guilt that should not be present in such kind eyes.
For all the times Darios has cherished Zacharias' heart, it is still always a shock when it should no longer be. He has never had reason to be concerned, has he? "I have been eating and hydrating well," he manages, creaking the reassurance out. A tilt of his head, and a small kiss is pressed to one of Darios' palms.
"I will continue to do as such. There is no need for you to worry."
"Then I will love those parts of you as I love all of you." How he feels about such things outside of Bruno and Thrasir... he has readings he must find and conclusions to draw from such. He will remember this and all of today as if forgetting would be to lose sight of Bruno's visage entirely. It is a part of him.
"...I suppose it's less troublesome this way. It's difficult to think about things you know nothing about, yet we do now. I will take charge in looking into it." For quite obvious reasons.
A blush brushes across his cheeks. "If you say such things with your mask still on, this professor might get the wrong idea, Professor Bruno." It is a light jest. Masked or unmasked, Bruno or Zacharias, the words still pierce all the same.
"...does that mean somehow Askr has allowed these orbs into Fodlan?" Oh. Suddenly his eyes go a bit wide. "...Do not tell me you've been personally closing every one. From the reports there are some hundreds about the monastery alone-"
There is much to feel in these moments: gratitude that Darios still lingers, despite his own despise for what the lineage cannot escape; reassurance that Darios will look for his answers, and that so too will Bruno in search of their answers; flushed at the mirthful prod from Darios, as he manages a smile in silent laughter—
( he thinks about removing his mask, so he is no longer professor in gentle company, )
—and then, at Darios' final question, suddenly uncertain. His smile holds — he plasters it as such — even if it wavers and droops, subtle. "I cannot say how these orbs have arrived as such. Perhaps it is due to random chance, but..."
Another pause, as forced calmness injects itself into his voice, and hands that itched for his face return comfortably to his sides. "You are... correct. I have been closing each one myself." He tilts his head. "It is not too difficult to chase each one down."
For a moment, he must break it. The silent promise he made when Bruno kept his mask on.
The hug falters, Darios steps back and takes Bruno's hands, kneeling as he does. He is not fond of it, so his heritage is not so rosy. Of everything Bruno has told him - of everything Zacharias has said - never has he heard either voice falter so much. "It does," he says pressing a kiss to the backs of Bruno's hands.
"I certainly don't understand the extent of it. The far past of Aytolis is reminiscent of, they hold the shield that sealed the chaos dragon - the one who opened portals - where Gristonne held strong to the sword of that dragon. It is far from the same." Yet he imagines how the ones responsible must've felt.
Selfishly, he once wanted to go there, to where Bruno's home was wherever it might've been. "You are Zacharias. All that matters to me is that you are yourself." No matter what dangers may come - it's worth the risk.
"...I'm sorry for touching on something that... sensitive." He rises and the worry in his eyes is unhidden, plain for the world to see. If you want me to forget, I will."
If he is to maintain composure, to avoid what he had done to himself just mere moments ago, then he cannot move. There is not enough trust in himself to do anything but to stand there, hands held in Darios'. Darios has always been too kind — but just as the hurt he has caused as Bruno follows him where he goes, so too must his blood and disdain for it, too.
"No. There is no need for you to forget, nor is there a need for you to apologize." He sets his jaw. "That, too, is part of who I am."
And even if there has yet to be an understanding of how this opening and closing works, how the dragons of Gristonne and Aytolis dictate what Embla and Askr can do — Bruno tilts his head off to the side.
"If we know little about the powers that merge these timelines together," he murmurs; he must brush his own topic aside, lest Darios' concern renders him still, "then we will only have our current experiences to work off of. If it is solely you, then I... will do my utmost to ensure that your unique life is worthwhile."
A connection. If he uses a term like that then- "No... I am doubtful such a thing could exist. Our divine dragon sealed the chaos dragon... for better or worse, he was the means of stepping into the outrealm and realms beyond. With his death," – with Darios' being here – ",there is simply a closed dork that can never be opened on either side." Such would likely be the case for every world of theirs. If such a thing did not happen... then Aytolis and Gristonne would not exist as they do.
"You overestimate." Because no kind heart would ask you what I am going to. "You have a method to close those connections...?" The questions of why how - the whole of it burn in thankfully unseen eyes.
...Interesting. "I see." And he thinks he will leave it at that — to reinforce, to try and push back what he knows is a truth would only hurt them more. The unsaid is left to linger: I suppose it is only you in the worlds, then.
Does he overestimate? Bruno does not believe so. The grace Darios has shown — and continues to show — him is more than he could ever expect. Even if this question is heavy in the way it strikes and catches his breath, he could not fault Darios for it. "I do. I can close these worlds off. I am... not fond of it, but it—"
And the words that follow snag; and suddenly, his chest constricts. But Darios asks, and Darios cannot continue pushing through his own insecurities for Bruno's questions without Bruno doing the same in return. "I, ah—" it catches again, so his shoulders crumple with another try, "There are... two main kingdoms within the continent of Zenith: Askr and Embla. Askran royals are capable of opening worlds, whereas Emblian ones... close them."
A pause. The instability in his voice is more than he would have liked. "...Does that answer your question?"

Is Darios glad about that or perhaps saddened. Giving voice to the way it makes him feel is difficult, yet it is for Bruno so he must at least try. Timid hands are taken into his own and, mask be damned, he pulls Bruno into a tight hug. "It doesn't scare me so much as... I wonder if there has been a shadow I've been living in or perhaps you knew some version of myself who holds as much grace as you give me credit for. That must mean... am I the only one? Lianna and Rowan... are they too?"
He'd have liked to ask another question, but fear cuts in and if Bruno is allowed his mask, then Darios too will hide his troubled expression over broad shoulders.
The hug surprises him more than it should. His hands hover around Darios, before holding him in return, fingertips digging softly into his coat. Admittedly — "I am unsure. It is possible that the orb will find a connection to another version of you three one day. It has just... yet to establish one."
It is the truth; even if this truth is not clear, instead one that is only muddied and convoluted. "Or, you could be the only one. Or, there could also be another version of you in a different world — but rest assured that I, at least, have not met another Darios.
"Know that I give you credit for everything that you deserve, however." He clings on, arms tight around Darios' chest. "Do not think that I would over-exaggerate what your heart is capable of."
"After this long of being here, I've racked up favors to use in times like this." And the door falls shut silently. The click of its lock too is quiet.
"...you've kept it on?" Thus it must be difficult. He wonders if violet eyes will give away too much when already he knows that they will. "It's... not an easy matter to speak on, but the more we hesitate and hide the more difficult it will be in the future."
"Thus... I'll ask you directly." Nerves have him pulling his gloves off and setting his crown to the side. "Have you ever met me? Not me," – as based on reactions there is some distinction – ",but this face and this person?"
So begins what he imagines will be the longest night they've shared.
As Darios points out — it should be taken off, but his hands do not budge from his sides. There is no point in hiding from someone like Darios, who he will keep close to his chest until the end, and still, he refuses to yield. To have its grace as a shield for just a moment longer, while it continues to claw away at his throat — no, he cannot let go.
At least the first question is easier than what else Darios could have asked in its place. He finds it within him to set his gloves aside in conjunction, to hold out an unsteady hand for Darios to take. "No," he answers. "I have not."
He pauses, again. A question in return — "Why does that scare you?"
"It simply brings people to your world then..." People and entities and enigmas and myths it sounds like. How then, does a world like that persist? He will one day ask. One day, because today holds far too many more pressing questions. "To make such a gamble..." your world must endure a lot.
The moment lingers and though air itself conveys no sound, the sentiment carried between glances is grave. He's not quite sure it should receive voice even if it must.
When the silence is broken, so too is the tension in his chest. He shakes his head. "Ah, yes just. Give me a moment.... if you would, simply wait in my room and I'll join you once I have." Because Bruno already does far too much. Zacharias is an aide he's hardly worthy of. To ask for more... especially when he makes such a face, he cannot be so cruel.
And yet he must be as quickly he walks off to the knight quarters in search of someone to cover his lessons. It isn't a terribly long endeavor and he can only hope Zacharias does not wait too long. There is not other time than now, even if it might inconvenience their day.
He nods, but Darios is already off. By the pace he takes, Bruno thinks he will not have to wait for long, and thus takes his own brisk pace back toward the dormitories.
Inside, he does not think he is capable of holding still; without the threat of other eyes watching, of other ears listening, thoughts of his mirror claw away until his throat is scratched raw. Just because Darios doesn't see anything reflected back toward him — he knows; he will insist — does not mean it is bad.
It is good, for the universe to spare Darios from such a possibility. His hand hovers over his mask, and then falls; it can stay on. Fate has been kind yet again for his love, as is deserved, even if Darios has yet to see it himself.
The door swings open with a quiet creak, and Bruno stiffens as he turns — before relaxing. A breath, slow. "...That was quite fast."
Indeed it is. Bruno - another Bruno - appears in attire he thinks isn't quite fitting for him. And it is before Darios can wonder too much that Bruno's voice starts and he can hear it from his tone - repetition has ingrained those words upon him.
There is no interruption. Silver eyes watch as the orb seemingly fades and his stomach sinks further still.
"Zacharias..." From all that has just been told, been seen, what is he meant to make of it? For Bruno... it was quick, he needn't even touch the orb for that form to appear. Suddenly the hall feels incorrect to be within. "The heroes of your world come from such things?"
If he repeats something like that, they can move their minds elsewhere even as questions linger. Even as the most persistent of them begs to be spoken and answered properly.
The name cannot reach him this time; it is static that emerges from Darios' lips in its place. His hands continue to wring, continue to fidget.
But Bruno is fast to correct: "All heroes of my world come from such things, but it is not always a hero that comes out of the orb." Because for him to consider himself a hero — how laughable, he thinks. He stands far from such lofty titles. "Sometimes villains; sometimes dragons and gods that seek destruction in a world that is not theirs. It is always a gamble."
A pause as he turns back toward Darios, and at the sight, he lets go of his own hold behind his back. Something brews behind sunken eyes, more potent than what he had ever seen. He thinks, briefly, of reaching for the other's hands — but out here, in the clearing of grass? His own hands curl inwards instead, tense. It is only you in the worlds, and he knows that is for the better, no matter what Darios may think.
Just, just... how is he to convey as such?
"Darios," it is hummed under his breath, gaze softening under the mask, "find someone to cover your lectures for the rest of day — or I will."
Sometimes, having solely one across all the universes may be better than having too many.
"That's a possibility?" He would ask who it is Bruno has met, who it is he has not. What lands is he familiar with? What customs has he himself participated in?
It all turns to sand on his tongue. His eyes fall back to the orb and a nervous bead of sweat rolls along his back. "When you get close or touch the orb... what does it look like?"
As if to invite a demonstration, Darios steps back from the orb that's gained its iridescence back. A shift in personalities too? A small chuckles leaves him. Surely he must be joking. Even if Darios knows he is not. Even if he knows first hand that such things can occur, that such tears in time can pull the same face from different points...
The orb is grey, so he knows what he will see when he approaches: a face alike his own, donned in a costume that matches the fool he is. If he were to touch the orb, then—
No. He could not allow the other to be whisked to this world yet again. But Bruno's eyes dart over at Darios, sensing the despair rolling off of tensed shoulders — and suddenly, his own mouth goes dry as he stares back. "It... is," he manages, croaking out the words. "This, I am confident in, as I have met myself."
He takes his step up to the orb — as if taking on the mantle, forcing through his hesitance to show proof of his own word: that he has met himself. Sure enough, his own face appears in the orb, white suit and coattails trailing behind his figure, and Bruno cannot suppress the nausea that quickly follows.
Now, to demonstrate that he means it when he believes that one is better than too many: bile coats his tongue once more as pressure crushes his skull. Darios must find out about this eventually, but isn't it too soon? when will it ever be the right time?. Under his breath, he starts the incantation—

"Hey, I said better luck! Not winning!" To be fair, he easily could have figured out the right winner. But it was more fun to mess around a little bit. And he didn't really feel like it. He didn't need to keel over on the ground with a headache right now. He wasn't even wrong. Horse Number 8 HAD done better than Horse Number 4.
It was like, totally dirty here because of all the horses and shit. He didn't want to dirty his perfect white robes anyway. He was so pretty and perfect after all!
"Oh lil ol' me?" Izana laughs, covering his mouth with a sleeve over his hand, "I'm just here to watch the drama! If I wanted to gamble, that wouldn't exactly wouldn't be fair would it?"
He flips his hair casually, looking rather proud of himself.
"I'm the geninue real deal, you know! A real boy with real future sight!" Izana winks, smiling brightly, "I'm descended from a divine dragon. I really can see the future! So, like, it'd totally be cheating if I wanted to gamble."
No, such a man would not lead him to the main gambling ring. Merely an observer, and not a noble organizing the betting — so Bruno frowns, disappointment evident through the sharp downturn of his lips, although he is uncertain if it is because of his mission now falling flat or the fact that he is speaking to someone with the blood of a dragon.
Perhaps both, frankly. "I see." His voice is flat, arms crossing in front of his chest. If anything, if this visit becomes a waste — he might as well see how far this man's predictive powers take him. "This divine dragon you speak of... does it only grant you a vision of the future, at your command?"
"How is such a thing even tenable?" The thought of the other times, of the Iagos and the Validars gathering together in a single world. But why would a world call upon people like that?
The clearing of his throat, the shift in his demeanor – Bruno's next words have grey eyes alight with curiosity. If he's so accustomed to such a place, to people coming from unknown lands – Darios recalls their time in Elyos, the vault and the familiar faces carved into statues that towered above him. They may not be some such altar where Bruno hails, but to know it acted as such a place. A man with a breadth of knowledge far exceeding his own is placed a step further.
A timid smile crosses his lips and this time he turns completely to Bruno. "Of course you would say such a thing. I'm quite jealous. I wondered what it would be like if the heroes we hosted in Gristonne and Aytolis were to stay with us. The accommodations and all manner of way we'd have to adjust to people from entirely different histories to our own." The question of how the people of Zenith did it sits along his tongue.
But as does another. This one holding a far more anxiety inducing notion behind it.
"Have you met some of the people here before then?" Ike is naturally a bit of a special case, if he recalls correctly... does that mean the two of them even before their mission together? It's a thought that attempts to save him, but the drumbeat of his heart is too loud and the hesitation in his eyes are clear. Have you met me before?
No reason to be jealous, he thinks; when he says neither interesting nor fruitful, it is only true. Zenith can only cause turmoil when worlds grow to be too interconnected, just as it had for him. Darios' question that follows is simple, and Bruno opens his mouth to give another nonchalant answer — before catching a glimpse of questioning silver.
His mouth closes. Lips pull into a thin line. No, not a simple question anymore; Darios probes for an answer that cannot be given here. Hesitant, he wrings his hands behind his back and nods. "Some. But I am not very... familiar with them." These bodies, after all, were merely tools. "But who appears in Zenith and through the orb is dependent on random chance. Some faces are more common than others, simply due to the prevalence of their worlds."
...That is all fluff. Hollow words to avoid the truth: that he has not met Darios, nor has he ever heard of Gristonne or Aytolis prior to his arrival here. But perhaps that is for the better — but how could he convey such a thought without the question of why quickly following behind?
"Even if their faces may seem identical, their personalities will still differ — in ways that would make them more liked or hated." Pause. "Sometimes, having solely one across all the universes may be better than having too many."
