We should be celebrating all together.

Instead, the invitation lies unopened where I left it by the door, heavier than it has any possibility of being. Instead, I am recounting every piece of your memory. Instead, I am grieving.

Instead, you have been dead for seven years.

Life hasn't slowed, hasn't paused, hasn't relented in even the smallest increment. If I had thought I knew loss before, it is nothing to the loss I know now. Grieving for your own self is painful and deep in its own way, but to grieve for others is an acute and searing pain all on its own. I have lost too many in the years you've been gone... I know what it is to lose family, loved ones, even the tiniest part of me that was also not me. Wishing for that briefest of impossibilities, One More Moment.

You were my best friend. You were also the first person I really loved that held no relation to me. As I child, I thought that meant I would marry you. What I didn't realize is, of course, both parties must be aware of this. I think you would have laughed a lot at my silly childhood ideas, though at the time I am sure I made a nuisance of myself far more than anything else. Now, all I need to say is "I loved you" and that is enough. I miss you, damn it, and you should be here, but until we solidify the whole "communing with the dead" tactic, I will gladly continue being one more person keeping your memory alive.
