Seriously, though; the pattern of the Duffer Brothers introducing a new likable character every season purely as a means of securing an emotional death scene or giving the other main characters a motivational force/trauma to work through without having to think about sacrificing their marketable fan favorites is & has been getting very old.

Doing it once with Bob is one thingーdone sparingly, it’s an effective way to do just that. Not wanting to kill off your main characters isn’t necessarily a BAD thing so long as you have more for them to do in the story.

But... Barb, Bob, Billy, Alexei, Eddie... they basically do it once per season nowーmeanwhile, their fan favs keep getting death saves at the last second so I don’t even feel any tension or fear for them anymore. After “killing” Hopper in S3, they couldn’t even wait 5 minutes before teasing “an American” being held in Russia. People were mad about seeing Hopper in the S4 teasersーit’s been obvious for three years he was coming back, are you kidding?

I haven’t felt any ACTUAL tension for a major character since because it’s clear to me the Duffers just want to the death stakes of Game of Thrones without committing like Game of Thrones (well... S1-S4).

This whole time I was confused, because I’m pretty sure in the actual D&D lore, Vecna is higher than the Mind Flayer in terms of threat, so when they made it seem like he was his subordinate this whole season, I was like “???”
