Do I think billford as a ship is the only correct interpretation? No. Do I think interpreting them as Just Buddies and nothing but Buddies is wrong? abso-fucking-lutely.

And I'll tell you why. Gravity Falls is all about ✨💕BAD RELATIONSHIPS💕✨

Mabel and Gideon, Soos and Giffany, Dipper and Mabel's divorcing parents, McGucket and Emma-May, Sevral Timez and their producer and then Mabel, I can go on for a long, long time. And it's 1am so I might! But Bill and Ford fit right in with this crowd. Clearly the bad relationships of Gravity Falls aren't exclusively romantic but look at this list and tell me there isn't a majority.

There's a ton of ways you can interpret them but here's what I think is the most interesting take.

In Boyz Crazy, Sevral Timez tell Mabel the details of how their producer is excessively controlling to them under the guise of loving them. They're unable to notice the unhealthy treatment until Mabel points it out, because being clones, they were born into it. Mabel goes on to recreate the conditions they used her to flee and they're unequipped to push back or leave on their own.

This is obviously a pretty clear metaphor (intentional or not) for how children born to abusive parents will often find abusive partners- but the important part is that Bratsman is also their employer.

He's controlling in the same way as an abusive parent and later abusive partner. This is what Bill does to Ford.

It's getting late I'm getting less lucid.

Ford's entire childhood he was surrounded by people who were pushing him to be Special. He was determined to make people see him as more than a freak and being treated like a person was his reward for working harder than is healthy to overcome their preconceptions. This was compounded by his father's pressure for his sons to essentially make up for him having them by becoming rich.

Then Bill comes along. And Ford doesn't know anything different.

Ford's going to run out of grant money because he's hit a dead end in his research. Bill slides in at the height of his desperation. He pushes Ford to dedicate his every waking and sleeping moment on the portal and causes him severe harm for wanting to back out (even if for Bill it's a remarkably pulled punch), and makes him cut off his only friend for his work. He even causes Ford to have to fight himself in order to keep from activating the portal.

Billford is a toxic romantic relationship and a metaphor for workaholism.

Don't think it's romantic? I don't ship it but you have to accept it's cannon. Don't believe me? Try leaving your crush a pile of dead rats after you've explained how you view that as a romantic gesture and then throw a party where one thing lead to another and then trap him in an enormous stone pyramid and sing an increasingly shrill song to them until they confess their true feelings and call me in the morning. Also have you read the book of gatsby? because just because daisy's into daisy doesn't mean she wasn't at least into the idea of gatsby.

Human Bill designs piss me off no matter what they do because it's always wrong for him. I see people draw him as a white little twink sexyman and that feels wrong and then I see someone draw him as still a little twink sexyman but black this time and it feels wrong and I see them draw him like a triangle shaped fat person and that feels wrong and he's always too young or too old or too gnc or not gnc enough or too skinny or too fat or too robotic looking or too human. to put it simply he cannot look like a person without it being Really weird to me. I think it's because the only form that makes sense for him is a fluid one where he changes situationally on his own whim and whenever you make your own character to inject him into you're visually confining him to your own expectations for him which breaks from the very nature of his character. He was written to do as many unexpected things as possible in the shortest amount of time he's onscreen and making him be one static form is reductive to him.

Now,, here I will make a caveat. Often, I see people writing aus where the theraprism forces a human form upon Bill as means to bring about meaningful growth in him. I think you can use the inherently reductive nature of assigning him a human form that's not as flexible as his lovely equilateral form as a brilliant metaphor for psych abuse and a great allegory for how he responds to their methods.

On the positive end of human Billses I think it's a fun character design exercise even though it will Always piss me off. I think it's really interesting how nobody ever draws him human the way he draws himself in the book of bill (buffass romance novel hunk)

His relationship to gender is another thing I don't see people talk about a ton. I may be wrong but I can only think of two people he's ever long-term possessed and that's Ford and Silas Birchtree. Other than that we have evidence that he's only ever (successfully) possessed men (but he did try to get Pacifica that one time). He draws himself as a buff human guy and dressed the ciphertologists in ties. But then again, does THIS look cisgender to you?
