hestia was born and raised alongside the most loving parents one could have, and her sister. the girl was constantly surrounded by love and light, but, there was always something in her: a pang of extreme sadness in her heart, a tickle in her throat and a knot in her stomach, every time her eyes fell on her family... as if she knew something they didn’t. sometimes, in even the happiest moments, hestia would burst into inconsolable tears around them...and she never knew why. one reoccurring dream of their demise, one that was all too real where she’d wake with the smell of car exhaust in her nostrils, haunted her every waking day of her life since she was a small child. years of this caused hestia to be diagnosed with general anxiety and panic disorder. 

that dream wasn’t the only thing that plagued her. her senses were constantly being taken over by phantom memories - small things put her on edge: vibrant yellows, the smell of burning wood, the sound of cheery music, and her ears ache of deep breathing, gasping, moaning in pain, weeping and shrieking - even when nobody is there. sometimes even teddy bears may send her into an episode. 

she feels most at peace at work, the floral shop she owns next to the funeral home. there is something comforting to hestia, tending to living plants so close to a place of death. sure, everyone knows plants and flowers are alive, but, hestia actually can see each inhale and exhale the flowers take - the scent of the flowers seemingly protects her from all of the things that haunt her - the things she doesn’t understand.

aside from the floral shop, hestia finds hobby in growing medical marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms. they aren’t for sale, or even for gifts, but are simply for herself to self medicate herself when she feels her mental health spiraling.

her name, is a reference to midsommar itself: hestia (fireside) espen (god-bear).

through technically dani is considered a villain from her actions, she is a victim. she was manipulated, she was taken advantage of by her ‘friends’, her boyfriend, and her experience with the hårga. 

hestia just wants to live a life without the concern that she will be manipulated once again. due to this, she tends to keep to herself unless she can know for sure that she can trust someone.
