LGBTQ activist and supporters utilize hashtags to drive awarenes

During the 2014 Olympic games, LGBT activists used McDonalds cheers to Sochi hashtag to raise awareness about Russia’s anti-LGBT Laws. This forced McDonalds to release a statement “McDonalds supports human rights, the spirit of the Olympics and all the athletes who’ve worked so hard to compete in the Games. We believe the Olympic games should be open to all, free of discrimination”  

The Trevor project is the leading national organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention to LGBT people under 25. This organization has helped save countless lives with its hashtag trevor project, circulating around LGBT friendly youth social media. 

The Instagram page “it gets better” has developed the hashtag it gets better to empower and connect LGBT youth from around the world. Videos and pictures from people around the world share their personal stories, while the assuring the viewers “it gets better”; there is light at the end of the tunnel.

In the Philippines the hashtags rise up together and we are family too, is a statement of solidarity for LGBT and allies for marriage equality. On June 19th the supreme court will hold its first arguments on the petition for certiorari and marriage equality after three years on the docket. 

The case to come out of Texas is Lawrence v. Texas. In that case, two men were convicted for having consensual sex in a private home, under the Texas anti-sodomy law. The case went to the Supreme Court of the United States, where it was struck down. Because the decision made by the Supreme Court, all anti-sodomy laws in the United States are considered unconstitutional and unenforceable. There are still States that have anti-sodomy laws in place, in 2014 Louisiana House of Representatives voted 67-27 to retain its unconstitutional law, police are still known to run same-sex sting operations and arrest citizens, although every case is dropped because States cannot enforce unconstitutional laws. 

there are only 21 States + D.C that has a law that explicitly prohibits discrimination against LGBT.

this article maybe from 2014, it shows what the LGBT community has fought and achieved in 48 years. The first gay pride parade in 1970 was known as Christopher Street Liberation Day March, it was meant to be a one-time commemoration of the Stonewall Riots. they might have not imagined that their effort will began to change the minds of many people 48 years later.
