Chapter 1
You were walking through Manhattan, holding Steve’s hand tightly as you looked around the unfamiliar surroundings. You looked up at him; he was so much taller and bigger now. It felt strange. He looked so different; you didn’t mind it, but you’d be lying if you said a part of you didn’t miss your scrawny husband. Steve was keeping secrets from you and lying; you weren’t an idiot. You knew joining the army didn’t make someone taller or give people super strength. It had led to multiple arguments between the two of you, if you could even call them arguments; it was mainly you pacing as you yelled while he sat and listened. The fact that he never raised his voice only made it so much more infuriating. You knew he would be leaving for a USO tour soon, though, so you decided to table the discussions.
“Darlin'... what are we doing here?” you asked as you glanced at the wealthy people around you; it was clear you two didn’t fit in. You were dressed in a dark blue dress; it was the nicest one you owned. Steve had told you to dress nicely, but he hadn’t told you much about where you were going.
Steve smiled, pressing his lips against your forehead. “It’s a surprise,” he said.
You smiled up at him, but you couldn’t help being nervous; you two didn’t fit in here.
You followed him into a fancy department store, and your eyes widened as you took in your surroundings. Your pumps clicked against the marble floors.
“Stevie... we can’t afford this,” you said, pulling back slightly.
Steve looked down at you and shook his head, a guilty smile on his face. “I can... Don’t worry, I got a bonus from that senator. Please... let me make it up to you... for hiding everything for so long,” he said, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “I’d like to get my lady something nice before I leave for my tour… maybe a ring?”
“No!” you interrupted, looking down at the wedding ring on your finger. It was his mother’s ring, a silver band that held an amethyst stone. “No... My ring is perfect. I don’t need another. Darling... trust me, I appreciate the gesture, but... I’d rather you save that money for our future,” you said.
Steve thought to himself for a moment. “Is that truly what you want?” he said, to which you responded with a nod.
“I already have everything I want, right here,” you said as you cupped his cheeks in your hands.
The tips of Steve’s ears and cheeks flushed. You smiled, knowing that he was still the same even after the serum. Steve placed a hand over yours.
“Sorry, dear, but I need to get you something. Even if it’s small. I’ll save the rest, but my wife deserves to be spoiled whenever possible,” he said.
You smiled up at your stubborn husband and shook your head.
“Okay, fine... um... something small,” you said before looking around the dark oak counters where many rich women stood speaking to the saleswomen who had given you judgmental looks when you’d walked in. “But not from here... they’re looking at you like hungry dogs would look at a giant piece of steak, and at me like I don’t belong here. We are not supporting this place!” you said as you turned on your heel toward the exit.
Steve followed behind you. He wrapped his arm around your shoulders and opened the door for you.
“Of course, dear,” he replied.
You leaned your head against his shoulder as the two of you walked down the busy streets of Manhattan.
You went to different stores and department stores for hours. Steve never once complained, though. He understood why you’d be hesitant to spend money at businesses that judged you. You gripped his arm tighter as if trying to mark your territory. Whenever a woman stared at him, you glared at every woman who did. You two had never had this problem before; you were experiencing something you’d never experienced before with your husband: jealousy. No woman had ever paid him any mind before the serum, except for you.
You huffed and pressed your lips against his, leaving behind a red lipstick stain. Steve was clueless about everything, though. He just smiled brightly at you.
“Hmm... what about that place?” he said, pointing to a small antique store.
You tilted your head and nodded before walking inside with him. Steve was quick to get the door for you; you hadn’t touched a door handle or the back of a chair since you’d been married.
You walked into the small store, looking around at the vintage pieces. The store was filled to the brim with different glassware and furniture. You kissed Steve’s cheek before wandering around the store; it was a habit you’d picked up, not that he minded it. There was now a red lipstick stain on his cheek that matched the one on his lips.
You stepped toward the glass case that held different jewelry; your eyes landed on a pair of rings. One was a simple yellow gold wedding band, along with a gold ring that held a small princess-cut diamond.
Steve followed your gaze, placing a hand on your shoulder.
“We’ll tak—”
“How much are these rings?” you interrupted, asking the old woman behind the counter.
She smiled at the two of you, looking at the pair of rings.
“They’re fifty-five together normally... a hundred for the real snobby ones, but... for you two... I can do twenty-five,” she said.
Your eyes widened as you looked back at the woman.
“But... I don’t understand. You could surely get more than twenty-five for these rings?” you said, not noticing Steve reaching into his pocket for his wallet.
“I could, but... I’m sentimental. I’d rather they go to a young couple that looks at each other the way you two do. Think of it as a wedding present,” she said, nodding toward Steve, who handed her the money before you could speak.
The old woman unlocked the case and placed the ring box in a bag, which she handed to you before looking up at Steve.
“Besides, I’d understand why you’d want to get a ring on his finger quickly,” she said with a small smile.
You giggled and nodded. “You have no idea, I swear women lose all common sense and decency when they see him,” you said.
You spoke to the old woman for a few more minutes before you left the store. You looked up at Steve and bit down on your bottom lip.
“Thank you so much, darling,” you said.
He kissed your forehead in response. You leaned your head against his shoulder as you both walked to the subway to head back home.
A few days had passed since the visit to Manhattan. Steve was sitting on the couch in your shared apartment, his eyes wide in shock as he stared up at you. His cup of what used to be piping-hot tea was now lukewarm. He stared at you, mouth agape, eyes wide.
You smiled widely at him, placing your hands on your hips. “Soooo? Do you like it?” you said and giggled before you spun around. You were dressed in a dark blue halter top with a deep neckline, a red-and-white striped short skirt, a blue hat, and a pair of silver pumps. It was the outfit the Star-Spangled Singers were supposed to wear on their USO tour with Captain America.
Steve struggled to respond; he was more shocked than anything. “You... you look amazing, dear, but... um... where’d you get...” he said, gesturing to the outfit.
“Oh! It was pretty easy... I just auditioned and got a spot. Plus, when I mentioned I was your wife, it was pretty much guaranteed,” you said as you stepped toward him.
Steve nodded slightly, trying to make sense of the situation. “Auditioned?... Wait, so that means...” he said.
As you made yourself comfortable on his lap, he cleared his throat, placing his hands on your hips and tracing circles with his thumbs.
“Mhm!... I’m gonna go on tour with you!... I hope you don’t mind that I didn’t ask first, darlin'. I just... I can’t be without you for that long,” you said before cupping his cheeks in your hands and pressing your lips against his. “Plus, the thought of you being surrounded by a bunch of pretty women... hmph... I trust you, but not the... I mean…” You said as you placed a hand on his bicep.
Steve smiled and shook his head. “I would never be unfaithful... but... I... don’t think it’d be wise for you to...” he trailed off.
You responded with a glare.
He cleared his throat before continuing. “We’re going to Europe, dear... not too far from the battlefield... I couldn’t live with myself if you got hurt... Hell, Bucky would probably kill me first if he knew I’d taken his sister with me,” he said, at which you rolled your eyes.
“Well, it’s too late. I quit my job at the diner… and I already signed all the paperwork,” you said as you wrapped your arms around his shoulders, burying your face in his neck. “Now are you going to help me get this ridiculous get-up off, or are we going to sit here talking about Bucky?” you said with a wink.
Steve’s cheeks flushed, but he was quick to reply with a “Yes, ma’am,” in that familiar Brooklyn twang.
You awoke many hours later, lying on what seemed to be a hospital bed, but you weren’t in a hospital; you were in the medical facility located in Avengers Tower. There was an IV in your arm and all sorts of wires monitoring your vitals. You were dressed in an oversized navy blue shirt that you assumed was Steve’s. You didn’t remember how you had ended up here or what "here" even was. You had a pounding headache.
Steve was seated in a chair that seemed too small for him. His head was resting on the bed. He was fast asleep, and who knew how long he’d been there? You ran your fingers through his hair; tears welled up in your eyes. You didn’t understand what was going on, but you were glad to see him again. There was a dark bruise forming on his cheek.
Steve sat up when he felt your touch; his eyes widened.
“You’re awake,” he said, placing a hand on your cheek and wiping away your tears. “What’s wrong? Does something hurt?” he asked, immediately sitting up.
“I... I think... I lost the... the ring... I’m so sorry,” you said suddenly, causing Steve’s eyes to widen. You placed a hand on your chest where the locket used to rest.
He couldn’t have cared less about the jewelry he’d given you at that moment.
“No, no, it’s... It’s alright... I’ll get you a dozen more rings... It’s not your fault... I... how much do you remember?... About what happened to you?” he said.
You sighed and shook your head. “N-not much... I... I remember getting... taken... by a few HYDRA soldiers... three of them... during the battle in France... but... it’s all blurry and blank after that...” you said as you lowered your gaze. “I... please... tell me what’s going on... the... the truth...” you said.
Steve placed his hand over yours before looking back up at your face.
“It’s... It’s been decades, love... seventy-five years... I, um... was frozen in time too... um... It’s hard to explain, but... when you were taken... HYDRA... they seem to have taken you and... perhaps experimented on you. I’m... I’m sorry... I... I should’ve looked for you. I thought you left... not that you were taken... I’m sorry. I should’ve...” he cut himself off as his eyes became glossy. “I know it’s a lot to take in... I understand if you’re angry... or feeling lost... I can leave you alone if you need a minute...” he said.
You smiled and shook your head.
“No, the opposite... I’m just... glad you’re okay... and that you’re here too, darlin'... and you better not leave me alone again... I’m going everywhere with you from now on,” you said as you placed your hand over his.
You then looked around the room once more, confused by all the technology.
“So, um... where... are we?”
“Avengers Tower. We’re in the medical wing. Uh... It’s hard to explain, but... we’re in New York. The Avengers are my team... my family... You can trust them,” he said as he held your hand.
You nodded as he spoke, trying to make sense of everything.
“I see... so we’re home... and we have each other. That’s all that matters,” you said before pressing your lips against his.
“Yeah, it is...” Steve agreed. His eyes softened, but then they widened once more. “Bucky’s here too. He’s on the way back right now… won’t land for a couple of hours,” he said quickly. He couldn’t believe he’d forgotten to tell you. “He’s a little different right now, though... he, uh... HYDRA... the people that took you... they got him too,” he explained, his expression becoming grim. “But he’s still the same Bucky deep down.”
Your eyes widened as tears began to stream down your cheeks.
“Bucky... he... thank God...” you said, shaking your head.
You got out of the hospital bed, pushing the blanket off yourself before hugging Steve tightly. You practically fell into his arms. Steve’s eyes widened; he wrapped his arms around you, squeezing you tightly as if he were afraid you’d disappear if he let go.
Just then, the door burst open, and both of your gazes followed the noise. Bucky walked in quickly; his eyes landed on you. He looked as if he were seeing a ghost. He stood a few feet away, frozen.
You kissed Steve’s cheek before stepping toward Bucky. You wrapped your arms around him.
“Jamie... It’s good to see you,” you said.
Bucky let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, hugging you tightly.
“You too, Peanut.”
