The short answer is that self-publishing a book based entirely on someone else’s intellectual property and distributing it in a way that creates profit is a great way to get sued, or at least receive a cease and desist that makes all the work go to waste.

The longer answer:

I’ve considered making a cookbook and releasing it as a free download for free distribution, and I may still do it. (I have some layouts started and have made about twenty recipe pages.) 

But without access to mainstream distribution like a self-publishing platform, it probably wouldn’t go very far, and selling fan content through a mainstream platform is a legal no-no, even though some people get away with it for a long time (looking at you, knock-off coloring books on Amazon). 

However, it most likely would be safe to publish a PDF for download in non-mainstream places if I ever decided to. Because I know an official recipe book for SU is not going to be published, and therefore a fan version wouldn’t capture customers who would have otherwise bought the official one.

I'm an author and I know how to write a book proposal, so at one point long ago I talked to one of the people I happen to have as a contact in the publishing world, who was at that time working on the line of tie-in books for Steven Universe and had authored one of them. She told me that an official recipe book would not be published because only the Rebecca Sugar–authored books made enough money to justify continuing to publish related books, and the tie-in line was canceled. Plus a recipe book would have required expensive binding (most recipe books are supposed to lie flat) and either food photos or lots of new art to be commissioned (also expensive). Plus they only use their own staff authors anyway, so an outsider like me would not have been allowed to freelance it or propose the project.

A lot of people have been wondering why Steven is so angry, and where their sweet baby boy has gone, and I think people are struggling because they don’t understand how little they respected Steven before.

Because I don’t think that Steven has undergone a huge character shift. Admittedly, he’s angry more frequently now, but I don’t think his anger is bigger or more intense or any worse than it’s been at other points in the series. Steven’s feelings haven’t gotten bigger…

But Steven has.

I counted up all the times Steven gets angry in the series, being fairly charitable and not counting more minor moments of annoyance of frustration. I’ve got about 21 moments out of 160 episodes for the original series. Granted, that’s only once every seven episodes, but it’s not insignificant. The idea that Steven never gets angry is factually wrong. 

We see his temper the first time in Steven the Swordfighter, and it’s not a very wholesome look at the boy. He’s frustrated because Pearl is gone and Holo-Pearl isn’t a good replacement. And, already, I bet you’re starting to tune out a little. Because Steven’s being a stupid little kid, isn’t he? Pearl’s coming back. He’s just throwing a tantrum.

Tantrum is the word we give to anger and sadness we don’t respect. It’s a word we use to belittle and ignore children, even when their feelings are justified.
