i do think there is a degree to which certain kinds of Instagram activists have convinced themselves that traumatising themselves in solidarity is a useful form of activism. "I'm having nightmares and crying so much I want to be sick because of all these videos of dying children but I can't look away while people are getting hurt" I mean don't you think you'd be able to help more if you weren't having nightmares and crying all the time?? don't you think this is a one-way trip to burnout? don't you think maybe increasing the amount of trauma going around is counterproductive? I dunno bro there's something to be said for bearing witness but there comes a point where you gotta look hard at yourself and go "am I helping, or am I just making myself suffer so I don't feel guilty for not suffering while somebody else is experiencing bad shit"
also i think this ties in to the "consumption as activism" mindset. like, i saw some posts about the global strike and encouraging people not to post regular stuff on social media, but only about palestine, because this would "force people to consume content about the issue"
this bothered me for a bunch of reasons that i'm only slowly untangling and beginning to articulate:
i don't think graphic images of real world violence should be reduced to "content"
i don't need to see graphic images of real world violence to think that that violence is bad, actually
seeing those videos is not going to make me care more than i already do
in fact being "forced" to "consume" this content is going to be triggering and upsetting to the point where i will withdraw from current events entirely and therefore be less informed and unable to participate in action. this is counter productive
passively "consuming content" in the form of watching videos of people being hurt or killed, to the point where you yourself are experiencing vicarious trauma, DOES NOTHING TO FIX ANYTHING. it is not activism. it is half-arsed penance to soothe your own guilt and convince yourself you care the mostest and are definitely angry about this
(you can care and be angry without directing nightmare fuel into your eyeballs at all times actually)
what does this achieve. really and truly.
and i get that people feel they have a responsibility to share "the truth", especially when the mainstream media is often eliding the details. but there is a difference between documenting war crimes, and forcing everybody you know to witness those war crimes with zero warning every time they open instagram to check whether their school friend had their baby yet. like, come on.
as someone else said in the tags, you only have to look at moderators on fb etc to know that constantly watching videos of violent shit is actively traumatising, and frankly i don't think increasing the number of people who have ptsd is a good thing, and i don't think it supports those being directly traumatised by the events themselves, and i don't think it's the activist gotcha that some of these people seem to think it is
