I Stopped Buying Fashion Jewellery. Here's What Changed
I used to buy fashion jewellery all the time. A new necklace for a party, cheap rings for college, matching earrings for every outfit. It felt fun. It felt cheap. And that was the problem.
Most of it turned green in a few weeks. Some pieces broke after one wash. A few even left a rash on my skin. I kept buying more because none of it lasted, and I kept telling myself this was just how jewellery works.
Then, about a year ago, I stopped. I decided to only buy sterling silver jewellery online instead. And honestly, it changed the way I think about accessories completely.
Why I Made the Switch
It started with one small thing. My cousin gifted me a pair of sterling silver studs for my birthday. Simple, small, nothing fancy. But I wore them every day for weeks and they still looked new. No colour change, no itching, nothing.
That got me curious. I started looking into 92.5 silver gold plated jewellery and realised it gives you that gold look without the gold price. It has real silver inside, with a thin layer of gold on top. So you get style and quality together, without spending a fortune.
That's when I decided to slowly replace all my fashion jewellery with real silver pieces.
What I Bought First
I began with the basics. A pair of silver drop earrings for everyday wear. They went with almost everything, jeans, kurtas, dresses. Then I picked up a silver bracelet for women that I now wear daily. It's simple, thin, and doesn't feel heavy on the wrist.
Next came sterling silver bangles. I used to wear plastic and metal ones before, but they would fade fast. The silver ones I bought have lasted much longer and still shine the same as day one.
I also picked up some stylish silver rings for girls, since I like stacking a few together. They don't turn my finger green like the old ones used to.
Small Pieces That Made a Big Difference
Some purchases were more practical than pretty. I bought sterling silver cufflinks for my brother's wedding gift, and he still uses them for every formal event. It felt like a proper adult gift, not just something bought last minute.
I also got 925 sterling silver anklets for myself. I like the light sound they make while walking, and unlike the fashion ones, these don't leave dark marks on my ankles.
For festivals, silver coins for gift have become my go-to. My family exchanges them during Diwali and other occasions instead of sweets or regular gifts. It feels more meaningful, and everyone actually keeps them instead of throwing them away.
What Actually Changed
The biggest change isn't just about how the jewellery looks. It's how I shop now.
I don't buy ten cheap pieces anymore. I buy one or two good ones and wear them for months, sometimes years. My drawer is less cluttered. My skin doesn't react to anything. And weirdly, I get more compliments now than I did when I owned way more jewellery.
There's also a mental shift. Fashion jewellery always felt temporary, like something I'd throw away eventually. Silver feels different. It feels like something I'm keeping, not just wearing.
Where I Shop Now
I do most of my jewellery shopping from Sterluv now. It's simple to browse, the pieces are well made, and I don't have to worry about anything turning colour after two washes. From earrings to anklets to gifting options, I've found most of what I need there.
If you're someone who keeps buying fashion jewellery every few months and feels tired of replacing it, maybe it's time to try something that actually lasts. You don't need a big budget or a jewellery box full of pieces you never wear. Sometimes, just a few good silver pieces are enough.
I'm not saying fashion jewellery is bad. It has its place for quick trends and one-time wear. But for daily use, gifting, and pieces that stay with you, silver has been a much better choice for me.
And honestly, my wallet and my skin both agree.
