me personally im not really a fan of soulmate aus UNLESS it's more of a "soulmates are made" rather than "soulmates are found" setup (if that makes sense?) and so i was thinking about that and thangyu and i was thinking about the soulmates au where you can only see in black and white until you meet your soulmate and then once you meet them you start to see in colour
and so for thangyu im imagining. thanos walking into a club one day- it's a new club he's trying out, club pentagon, and it seems pretty promising. the music is good, the drinks are good, and he's having a good time. his night out is going pretty well so far....... until all of a sudden, a headache splits through him, so painful that it knocks him off balance for a second. he closes his eyes and holds his head in his hands as the pain throbs through his head, feeling like it's cracking his skull... he hears the people around him asking if he's alright, but when thanos opens his eyes again, he's no longer thinking about the pain.
instead, all he can focus on is the fact that... his vision isn't in black and white anymore. after living his entire life wishing for the day that this would happen, he can finally see in colour.
the only thing is... he's in a packed club with over a hundred people surrounding him- how the hell is the supposed to find the one that's his soulmate?
he spends the rest of the night pushing through the crowd on the club's dance floor, asking everyone he can find "did you just start seeing in colour?" and hoping that he'll be able to find his apparent other half, that he will stumble across a person who just went through the same revelation as him, who's asking the same question he is.
but with every person he stops to ask, with every person that tells him "no, sorry", thanos loses more and more hope. when it feels like he's been rejected by every person in that damn club, a part of thanos doesn't even care anymore that he's finally reached his dream of seeing in colour.
because what was the fucking point if he had lost the person who gave that colour to him?
he keeps searching until eventually the club doors close and he gets kicked out along with all of the not-soulmate club-goers, and thanos feels nothing but defeat... but if only he knew that he was never going to find the person he was looking for in that crowd.
the last thing that nam-gyu remembers before passing out was looking up from the bar and out into the crowd of people filling the dance floor at the club, and then the worst pain he's ever felt shooting through his head. the very same pain that made his knees give out, so quickly that his coworker only just managed to catch him in time, before nam-gyu crashed to the ground behind the bar. he doesn't know how long it's been when he finally wakes up, but when his eyes eventually flutter open again and he finds himself laying on one of the couches in the employees only rooms in the back of club pentagon, there's only one thing running through his mind.
he can finally see in colour... but he's alone in this room, and the person who brought this colour to him already long gone from the club.
it's a few months later when thanos and nam-gyu actually meet for the first time. they bump into each other in club pentagon- though neither of them are aware that they've already crossed paths before. when nam-gyu introduces himself to the famous rapper thanos as a promoter of the club and offers him some free drinks, he has no idea that it had been thanos' eyes he'd met for a split-second in the crowd, that had brought colour into his life. when thanos takes him up on the offer, that night as well as every other night he comes to pentagon and seeks out nam-gyu for free drinks and as time goes on, drugs too, he has no idea that he's finally found the person he'd been searching for on that night so long ago.
both of them individually know that the chances of actually finding their soulmates is slim, that the likelihood of reuniting with a stranger from the club is low. both of them know that at this point, the only kind of confirmation they'd probably ever get would come years from now, when the inevitable that happened to everyone would eventually happen to them, too- when their soulmate would die, and the world would return to black and white.
thanos always hoped that he would go first. he wanted to die with his last sights being in colour; he didn't want to die in a world that was cold and grey.
nam-gyu always hoped that his soulmate would go first; he knew it made him sound horrible, but it was kind of a closure thing, you know? the day that he went back to seeing in black and white, at least he'd know that his search could be over, and he could hope that when he eventually went, too, that whoever his person was... maybe they'd be waiting for him on the other side.
nam-gyu knew it would happen some day. he just wasn't expecting to feel that pain again, that familiar shooting ache through his head, as he fights for his life on a cold, bloody, bathroom floor... when he looks over and sees thanos lying on that floor, a fork sticking out of his throat and blood soaking his hair and jumpsuit.
blood, hair, jumpsuit- nam-gyu knows what colour each of those things are. red, purple, green... but now, they've all turned back to shades of grey, and as he stares at thanos' dead body in front of him, nam-gyu finally learns the answer to the question he'd been asking for so long.
