Unexpected {Human!Toothless/Merida}
Toothless waited a moment before turning back to her, his eyes shining. He had to admit, it felt nice talking to someone about his home. He hadnât made many friends during his stay here, but part of him nagged realistically. Sheâs a princess, with⊠princess duties or whatever. Did she have time for a friend? Especially one that wasnât any sort of important heritige?
Berk didnât exactly have royalty. They had leaders, best fighters, stuff like that. But he wasnât taught on the ways of leadership here in this different land. His heart ached as he casted a glance over to her as she studied the townspeople.. He wanted to be her friend. He had only just met her, but she was against all the first thoughts he had upon hearing her name and title since his first arrival. And his imagination caught his attention; if she was casually walking amongst common people, surely she had time to have a friend? He would really like that.
Was she allowed to have a friend outside of royalty? Toothlessâs head hurt. He was watching her though part of her face was hidden in her cloak. A few red curls leaked out of the cover, and they shined in the daylight, and he had to pause. He wanted to see more of her face. Too much of it was shadowed and concealed in the hood of her cloak.
She wasnât the stuck-up, popular, always-craving-attention type of person that people on berk rumored to be the traits of princesses. Of course, most, if not all, have not ever met a princess. Among the female vikings, it was sort of an insult. It was used to make the woman feel week and spineless, if not selfish and dependant on others. It was a bit sexist, but that was part of the vikingâs culture. It wasnât often anymore that women were treated like that. Usually it was the children who picked on the weaker kids by calling them princess, but it was shortly grown out as they grew older. One way or another, they learned to be independent fighters.
Princess Merida broke all the thoughts that had ran through his head in the past years. Because right now, he was sitting down next to a normal girl with curly red hair, who insisted that she stay the background and spend a few quiet minutes chatting with someone she had just met. She did not put herself on a platform, nor did she act like she was superior. It just so happened that she had the title of princess. It did not define her, nor did it determine the way she acted.
"Yes, dragons." He chuckled warmly, crossing his arms at his chest and leaning against the bench. A second of awkwardness washed over him before he found a good subject to discuss casually. "But I see the art of battle and defense are not lost in these lands. Rumor has it that youâre quite the archer." His eyes sparkled. He had never handled a bow and arrow; while few vikings learned to handle them, they just werenât necessary unless they were heavy duty catapult material. Toothless never had the opportunity to use a hand-fit bow. "Iâve always wanted to try it." He muttered softly, more to himself than her.
Ah, archery! Â Merida lit up almost immediately, turning to face Toothless with a shine in her eyes and a bright smile on her face. Â "Ah'm only tha best archer in all tha land," she said happily. Â It wasn't said in a bragging tone-- it was merely fact, a fact that she was all too happy to state. Â "Mum doesn't like it. Â She doesn't think it's "suitable fer a princess" to be an archer. Â But Dad, he's tha one who taught me since Ah was a wee lass." She paused for a moment, thinking. Â
If he was so interested in archery, and, if she was being honest with herself, if  she was so intrigued by him, why didn't she just offer to teach him archery?  Mum would never approve of it; the princess teaching a foreign, non-royal man archery?  Heaven forbid.  Of course, that would make it all the more fun.  Merida bit her lip and glanced away, thinking quickly. Â
She came to a decision. Â Looking back at Toothless, she offered him an almost shy smile-- almost shy seeing as the princess of DunBroch was a brave, confident lass-- and said, "Ya know, if you'd really like ta try archery, perhaps I could show you sometime."
Meeting {Merida and Hiccup}
"Wow," Hiccup said, not sure how else to respond. Â Heâd only seen a couple of horses before, and Angus was definitely the nicest (and best cared for) out of them. Â It was clear from the way Merida talked about him that he was probably also the friendliest, too. Â He could relate to being friends with an animal, so he gave Angus a smile.
Of course she guessed half of the story in about two seconds.  He really needed to get better at telling lies and half-truths.  âYeah, I drew them,â he said, tucking the book back into his vest, âand heâs my⊠well, I ride him.  Calling him mine wouldnât really be right, weâre good friends and flying partners but I donât own him.â  It was a very complicated relationship that even some of the other riders didnât understand completely yet⊠But he wasnât here to lecture Merida on dragon training and why trying to own a dragon like a pet wasnât a good idea.  Really, if you didnât know why trying to treat a Night Fury like a dog was a bad idea, you probably werenât going to last long anyway.  He shifted the basket back into two hands so he wouldnât tire out before they got to the meadow- riding Toothless and working in the forge had helped his strength a lot, but he still wasnât the strongest person out there.
"Tha's pretty neat," Merida replied, eyes bright with interest. Â It was certainly a new way of looking at things. Â Partners, rather than pet and owner. Â Glancing over at Angus again, she tried to think of her horse like that, as a partner. Â It wasn't that hard-- she already considered him her best friend. Â
Noticing Hiccup shifting his basket around, Merida remembered their mission. Â "Right," she said, shuffling her own basket in her hands. Â "On we go. Â It's jus' over tha' hill," she said, nodding to a slight hill a little ways away, but not too far away. Â "It's worth tha trouble, Ah promise you."
