In a poem you wrote a while back about when Rosie was conceived (and subsequently Ford’s pregnancy), it was mentioned that a c-section was performed in the midst of a huge blizzard.
How the heck did Ford not bleed to death?! Also poor Ford having to go through however many hours of labor, and then recovery from an emergency c-section 😭
I’m also wondering if the specifics of what went on during that blizzard (and what happened after) could be elaborated on a little more 🙏
Ford and Fiddleford had originally been in talks with a doctor who would perform it at the hospital.
When it became apparent the roads weren’t going to clear anytime soon, Stan and Fiddleford had a meeting, and prepared a table down in the basement.
Fiddleford got right to work on putting together some tubing, needles, and reading up on how to perform a cesarean. Making most of the material himself and sanitizing the space as best as he could.
He made IV bags, and Stan donated several bags of blood to keep Ford from bleeding out.
Ford didn’t go through typical labor. He doesn’t have a birth canal, and had no contractions. But he started complaining about intense pressure and feeling like he had to use the restroom really really bad.
Panic started when Fiddleford proposed the at-home c-section. It took the pressure to turn to excruciating pain to convince Ford it was time.
Stan stayed at Ford’s head and held his hand. Talking about their childhood, doing what he could to distract Ford while Fiddleford got to work behind a curtain.
The only thing they had for pain management was a handful of Tylenol and some lidocaine cream they had handy. It really didn’t help that much.
Fidds worked as fast as he could. Once Rosie was out, he went to work stitching him back up. Stan took the baby and showed her to Ford.
Ford knocked out from the pain and exhaustion for several hours, then woke up the next day to the power in the house being out, and him in bed with baby Rosie in a bassinet next to him.
Stan took on the duties of baby care, while Fiddleford handled trying to get the power back on, and keeping everyone warm.
Everyone slept by the fireplace, and Stan used his body heat to keep baby Rosie warm.
Once the blizzard was gone a few days later, Ford went right to the hospital once the roads cleared. Got himself cleaned up, pain meds, and antibiotics.
