Soukoku's partnership is important for Dazai's character evolution, it marks parts of him that get fully explored during the dark era and his station at the ADA. I mean, I have preached about this enough on my blog but, here we go again lol.

Even before leaving the PM, Dazai definitely cared for Chuuya. And it was never because of Chuuya's "dark side" or whatever, he cares for him because of how exploisvely human he is; it facinates him, and he loved watching it up close.

From Chuuya stopping Dazai from shooting a dead body so pointlessly, to playing around in the arcade, to them solidifying their first teamwork.

Dazai's interest in Chuuya was one of the things that convinced him to stick around and live a little longer.

And like, Rimbound was meant to kill them both, and Dazai was willing to work together with Chuuya to fight against the death which he very much craves. That's such a big deal to just shake off in future explorations of their dynamic.

And I've already racked my brain enough with stormbringer, but Dazai's fondness towards his partner grows more and is even evident for us readers.

His concern when he had to tell Chuuya about the memory erasure comand and willing to make Chuuya’s decision weigh more than the destruction of Yokohama and the world as they know it ( also, the way Chuuya described the genuine concern etched in Dazai's face + how Dazai was thinkingof an alt plan in case Chuuya refused to go through with it).

Aughhh that itself already says a lot about Dazai, he understands what it's like to struggle with humanity and has enough empathy and care to handle that situation with Chuuya.

Anddd the absolute proud feelings that are described in the novel when Chuuya decides to go with the plan, and when finally Chuuya defeats Veraline and Dazai catches him in his arms, praising him and treating him gently.

Then ofc there's also the dragon head conflict and the amount of trust Dazai has when it comes to Chuuya, knowing he will follow through his plans no matter what.

That sort of trust comes from years of familiarity with one another but putting your life on the line like that also showcases a level of vulnerability, and this trust is such an interesting aspect of Dazai’s character considering he trusts a handful of people.

There's so many instances in skk's partnership from even b4 Dazai leaving the PM that showcase fresh nuances to his character, so wouldn't that make their current partnership push Dazai into a fresh development as well?

Like, when Dazai and Chuuya reunite, we see how they both genuinely mesh old behaviors towards each other but I wouldn't call that regressive necessarily.

Chuuya made Dazai genuinely laugh !! and to me, that demostratws the enjoyment that he feels to be around Chuuya.

He loves teasing him and is so comfortable around him because of how well they know each other, which causes Dazai's mask to fall off a little more often.

When they first teamed up after years, they both fall into their usual patterns. Dazai plays along with him, pisses Chuuya off to his proper enjoyment. But when shit gets real he also shows consideration for his partner, giving him choices and allowing Chuuya trust him without any real pressure.

When Chuuya used corruption, Dazai was very observant to when he felt Chuuya was at his limit. After all those years apart, he still cared to keep the information of Chuuya’s limitations, that's something deeply important.

After this moment, we have Chuuya’s declaration of using corruption because he trusts Dazai. And Dazai lets out a soft smile and calls Chuuya his partner. The wording is soooo !!! It's not ex partner or former partner, it's partner.

And that says a lot about their bond all together, even when on different teams they both are...

Despite Chuuya’s alliance to the PM or Dazai’s alliance to the ADA, Soukoku's bond is isolated from that.

And this isn't meant to like, reduce their respective loyalties and beliefs. But when they work together its literally built on common goals. And of course, you can add on the solid foundation of trust and affection that mingles beneath it all.

Dazai's character doesn't regress when he's around Chuuya because his feelings towards him unmask around him in very interesting ways, but it's not meant to overshadow his dynamic with other characters, its just meant to show a unique side of him.

Because that's how character dynamic works, and while some feelings/masks are just reserved to Chuuya, there's lots of moments that are reserved to Oda, Atsushi, Kunikida, Aku, etcetc.

In the Meursalt arc, Asagiri confirmed Dazai wasn't entirely sure Chuuya wasn't a vampire but had to trust that Chuuya wouldn't subcome to a vampire.

But he also makes a point in saying how this arc revolves around Dazai trusting his companions in general. So, how is he trusting Chuuya getting in the way of his development?

Yes, Chuuya may be in the PM but it's not like he's tempting or pushing Dazai back into it.

Their history is obviously complicated, clearly not sunshine and rainbows but it's clearly one that Dazai clearly feels familiar in.

It's to the point he can showcase habits or behaviors that only Chuuya will really understand, but they are not necessarily bad habits.

These behaviors are only displayed in front of Chuuya because that's always going to be one of his companions no matter the distinctive alliances.

Soukoku's partnership doesn't take away from Kunikida and Dazais or overall Dazai’s relationships with the ADA. Their relationship is just...a separate part of that world.

But yeah, overall i find it so redundant to Dazai’s character writing to just equate his relationship to Chuuya = instant connection to the Port Mafia.

By that logic, would that make Dazai's interactions with Akutagwa complete regression? If anything, his interactions with Aku add purpose and nuance to his character, too.
