you swallow the lump in your throat nervously. your pursed lips quiver when you notice that everyone’s gaze is still fixated on you even after you were through discussing your topic. your hands were still shaking, evident on the index card flapping steadily in front of you. if anyone looked hard enough, they would notice how much of a nervous wreck you were.

after a few more agonizing seconds your instructor finally clears his throat. your eyes snap up, waiting eagerly for his comment on your presentation.

he looks up and meets your eyes before spitting out words that crushed your spirit, “thank you for wasting our time.”

you hear a few snickers bubble from the lips of your other classmates and you only managed to give them a pursed smile and a nod in acknowledgment. your chest felt heavy after the disappointing remark on the report you’ve worked hard on. turning your back on the audience, you start gathering your things from the front desk. but before you can make your way back to your seat, a voice comes from the back row.

“this whole course is a waste of time. but did we ever complain?”

heads turn to the boy in the back row immediately. everyone had their eyes on him now but he looked unbothered, fiddling with the pen he had wedged between his fingers. 

“if you don’t have anything nice to say, shut your mouth, mr. lee,” your instructor replies.

minho looks up, eyeing the instructor with a bored expression that fueled his anger even more. “you didn’t have anything nice to say about her report either. did you shut up?”

his savage remark gets an unsolicited “ooh” from one of the other guys in the back row before the latter is silenced. for a moment the classroom was still. even you were frozen at the front—hands still clutching your laptop and scared to move a muscle and draw attention.

the instructor takes a sharp breath in, “get out.”

lee minho’s chair rattles backwards when he stands. everyone watches as he picks up his things and walks past the instructor on the aisle. he keeps a straight face, wavering only once when he passes you.

“great job on the report,” he utters, quiet enough for only you to hear.
