When people say they race swap in adaptations especially in "animated" ones where they don't have the excuse of "we race swapped because this actor is good" explanation. I find it hard to like the end product and I have a few issues with it.

I know this question of "why not just create a new oc aside from the canon ones?" But this for me raises a bigger question for me which is "why do you think that we as viewers won't like your new character from that specific background won't like them? If the character is so interesting, then why don't you trust your ability as a crew of writers editors and directors of marketing and showing that specific character?" I mean, to be frank, this feels like an insult to people's intelligence, and it feels like they are assuming that the fans of a certain source material are too simple brained and starved to get attached to whatever wonky change is made.

I will get specific now... Yes, I'm gonna talk about Annette and Issac. For Anette, she feels like that very stereotypical angry black woman, she's the definition text book of it. All there is to her is her pain, the writing constantly bends backwards to justify whatever atrocity she did by saying "well, she was a slave" as a crutch. I mean, in my own opinion, that's actually quite dehumanizing and it's been done repeatedly in the Netflixvania adaptation. I mean bro, let her be a human, she can make flaws, she can be really unlikable and still work as long as the narrative acknowledges that she's on the wrong side, and tries to make up for her mistakes, isn't that what a character development is? Growing past your past? I mean even when they get the chance to actually make a compelling character, they just don't. And which brings me to why even change if you're only going to make a bad representation for a certain demographic anyway??!

Now I will talk about Issac, my problem with him is that he's just another aggressive caricature of a representation. He genuinely doesn't change, and again just like Anette, all he has to himself is his last pain because he was a "slave".

Which brings me why actually race swapping him from a red head white man into what he is terrible. Because as we know, he was a slave, and he looks like a loyal one who's in some sort of a toxic relationship with his white crusader master even saying "because I love you" when he was being beaten which is in itself a bit ambiguous, did he have a Stockholm syndrome for his brutal master? Why is it that the only black person is expressing attachment to his jailer? Why is that? It serves no purpose other than TORTURE PORN. That's it.

Also, that is followed by the fact that he's an ex slave who is now in a maddening devotion for his new white vampire master reeks of white savior first of all, and it's also weird, because that implies harmful assumptions about him! Is he swapping his previous attachment from a human monster to even a worse monster? It's so hypocritical that he's pleading his loyalty to a globe wide genocidal maniac who's causing "suffering" while he preaches that humanity sucks because they cause suffering? And I didn't sense that the writing tried to highlight this as hypocrisy in Issac, because guess what? The show overall does agree with his world view, and does agree that "an elite's pain matters more than the regular superstitious humans" I have another opinion about that as a topic but let's stick to the matter at hand.

Also yeah I will forever feel disturbed at Issac saying about his so mighty white master that "perhaps that's all loyalty buys, suffering and dying on my master's floor" wtf? Why is he dehumanizing himself tho? Why is he willing to go to this extent for a man who always saw his species as ants? What difference is dracula to the people who tortured him? That he's not now the victim? .

Dracula has always seen Issac as disposable, I don't buy his "you're life is too valuable to be wasted on me" lame sobbing, because why tf throwing him to a hot ass desert? Yeah had been said before but this isn't bad just because it will hurt Issac physically (even though this matters a lot) but because it's undermined by the fact that DRACULA WANTED TO DIE ANYWAY? Sounds more like an obstacle being thrown away than a genuine care.

Back to my earlier points, again, and again all he has is his pain. Why are black people can't be presented in this show as more than their pain. Maria gets her angsty story about her family's drama, albeit it being cringe worthy, it's still something that's not related to her ethnicity. Alucard does, Trevor does. But when it comes to people of color, they always have to have an ex-slave backstory even when it doesn't make sense for them (Issac) . It's a weird binary to me.
