It's just that, occasionally, two of Luomen's patients, obviously pox survivors given the heavy robes and full body coverings they wear, come and visit. They're weird and they keep trying to get her into board games, but they're obviously of means because they give her treats and make sure Luomen's generosity doesn't lose them their house.

Also lakan was usurped as heir of his family when he was seeing fengxian he had to take over by force. So even there her life wouldnt have been straight forward plain sailing. I imagine an au where lakan finds out in time but still gets sent away so he has loumen look out for fengxian and maomao while he's gone and also while he's scheming to take over his clan to keep them safe. So maomao still has her connection to loumen and her big sisters at the verdigree house.

Like i've seen people say she'd treat maomao the same if lakan was able to find out before he went away and that never happened to her. Like no its very much the disease. That not to say she'd be a perfect doting mother probably not given what she says about her own mother and example she has.

I remembered that Luomen told little Maomao about Lakan. He said that Lakan also deserved sympathy, but at the same time he didn't stop Madam from chasing him out of the brothel. What's wrong is wrong.

I wonder which one that is consider "wrong". Is it about Fengxian and Lakan effort to lower her price by having a baby? Or because Lakan spent too much time in the West playing Go and Qianqi that made what it should be 6 months into 3 years of absence? Because that's the only thing I can think of.

Still, I don't believe that Lakan didn't deserved such treatments. That's why when I read volume 2 and volume 6, I'm always crying even though I already read that scene many times. Lakan doesn't care about inheritance that was rightfully his, he doesn't care he was consider weak in his family. He just want Fengxian and the child they had together. But still, it seems like that too is consider 'too big' for a wish.
