I haven't been very active in podfic fan circles for a bit, and it was nice to be remembered this past week.

One of my own meta posts, originally made as part of a meta fest, got the attention of a podficcer wanting to fill a challenge for a different fest. So it now exists in two formats in different places! Additionally, I took the opportunity of reading one of my meta pieces for that same podfic challenge, Out of the Auditory, after the podficcer made me aware of it! And meta can also inspire people to create new fanworks. - yourlibrarian.

My mentioned podfic was [Podfic] Meta Manifesto: Enemies to Lovers Stories. Out of the Auditory just revealed the entries for the 2026 round.

Please note, for newbie podficcers

Per AO3's Terms and Conditions (and basic podficcing etiquette!), you must have permission from the fanfic's original author to record their fic. If asking someone seems daunting, there's over 10,000 authors on AO3 with a Blanket Permission to Podfic statement on their profile! You can find a list of authors here, but I highly recommend using the Blanket Permission Highlighter extensions for Chrome and Firefox, to help you see at-a-glance what author's are on the BP list.

I didn't take part this year for more than one reason:

As someone who prefers to podfic existing fanfic instead of needing to write my own entry to podfic, I felt like I could take part in other events more easily as a podficcer.

(While there are no requirements that I write an entry in order to podfic, to me this seems to be the type of event where wanting more of XYZ to exist to podfic means needing to create XYZ myself. It happens with certain themes or fandoms for other events (so it's not too surprising), though it's possible that the bingo running for a few years now means that I could go back through past entries to look for some fic to podfic.)

I tried writing my own potential entries the time I did take part; my muse happened to pick a fandom where it's harder to use modern prompts, and I came away with the impression that I was somehow getting things wrong, even if no one explicitly said that. (Both in the sense of feeling like I was off historically and canon/fandom discordant.)

I hadn't experienced a daily list of submissions of fanworks posted by a certain time that day before (instead I've encountered daily lists of fanworks revealed after the submission deadline), so I posted to AO3 after the daily list time at least once. It wasn't the end of the world, but it did feel a little less fun. (Did I mess something up about the header info? Did I just post too late? Was I skipped for some other reason? Idk.) If I were to take part again, I'd probably skip trying to post across more than one day.

A little less specific to the Hanukkah Bingo, I've been struggling with creating anything in fandom spaces since October 7th. I've shared info about Hanukkah Bingo elsewhere, I've tried to share other events in different Discord servers, I've put forward some Jewish!Character prompts in a few prompt taking events, and I've basically been trying to do non-create-ZYX types of fannish activity. It feels like I haven't had any generative energy, any creative cups to pour from.

If some kind and wonderful soul has podficced your fic, the typo may have already been immortalized, and you will have to decide whether to make the podfic inaccurate

I'm not sure if it'll help relieve any worry about fixing a typo for you (or others reading this), but podficcers are capable of fixing typos while recording. Some will reach out to writers about fixing something, but some may fix small typos automatically (and only catch it in editing or if a listener points it out).

Unless you're rephrasing and making large edits, there's probably not going to be such a large difference in the texts that you fixing a typo will make an already recorded, edited, and posted podfic 'inaccurate'. Podficcers can also edit and re-upload audio if they want to match an updated text (or fix podfic equivalents of typos).

There's no "I don't podfic" option because it would win over any of the other options and it'd probably make me sad to see the graph so unbalanced

dropbox is on "allows streaming on ao3" and off ao3 because in my experience people don't always put it in their < audio > tags, just give the link.

should I record my voice to see the progress that testosterone has caused? not one of those "X months on T" thing because I feel like I wouldn't speak in my natural voice for something scripted and I wouldn't post this. I just think it might be a nice thing to hear bc its really difficult to know what your own voice actually sounds like to others.

Ive always had very bad voice dysphoria so im a little scared that ill still sound super high pitched and feminine (I didnt even sound like that pre-T so idk why I would now) and that might stop me from doing this. my biggest fear regarding passing is my voice being my "tell" that i wasn't born a man

My experience of anyone who doesn't have experience with listening to themselves on a recording - cis and trans people alike - is that they often are uncomfortable with hearing their recorded voice. There are minor editing tricks I've encountered from other podficcers in order to make editing your own podfic easier, but usually it just takes practice and acclimating to hearing your recorded voice. (Getting help from someone else for editing is possible, but I usually run into people who want to handle that on their own for podfic.)

I'm not saying this to try to scare you, aguineapigcouldntdothis, but it's more that if you do try to make a recording, you won't be alone if you're not enthusiastic about how your recorded voice sounds. It very well might be something where you stick the file somewhere to check years down the road and you might not love the process of recording or editing yourself recreationally, and that's an okay way to handle voice dysphoria.

Personally, I have had some moments in podficcing where reading a story helps more than trying to recreate "my natural voice", but that's more because I don't naturally click with free-talk or feeling like I'm on the spot. Narrating may change my inflection and breathing compared to a 'random recording of a candid conversation' approach, but I'm also not saying 'um' and other filler words for a minute. (I might just click better with comparing the same script, so I'm not picking apart whether my voice is different from using different text, too.) Your mileage may vary on this.

I'm kinda glad that asking if podfic could be submitted for commenters to choose from for April Comment Shower Bingo did end up allowing that fanwork type into the collection. The last I knew, two podfics that I didn't create have been added to the collection and I think at least one has new comments on them.

The state of commenting on podfic is different from commenting on fanfic, so anything that helps another comment on a podfic feels like some level of success.

Anyways. End of March 2023, I got sick, and I lost my voice as April began. My throat sounds like someone tried to do something painful to it, and I just barely made it out alive.

It’s determined that Severus Snape and Sirius Black are immune to punishment and irreparable after years of near-fatal pranks, bullying, and homemade curses. The only person who thinks them capable of ending the feud and finishing their education is Professor McGonagall. For the summer of ‘77, she gives them a pair of charmed hand mirrors and an ultimatum: communicate. That’s it, a mere ten minutes every Saturday.

Back at Hogwarts, when their animosity proves insurmountable, Sirius and Severus are relegated to a small, Eighth Year dormitory. The tight quarters—wandless—are intended to force them to make a peaceful reconciliation, but peace is impossible with a bloody war ramping up inside and outside the castle.

Severus is pulled into Voldemort's followers while Sirius struggles to get himself and his brother out. Canonically Jewish characters (like the Baudelaire orphans), characters who are* Jewish but it's not explicitly stated (like Bucky Barnes), characters who you like to headcanon as Jews (like Tina Belcher), characters who are Space Jew-ish or otherwise Scifi Jew-ish (like Leia Organa)... all are welcome. Interfaith, multicultural, patrilineal, and convert stories are all welcome! MESSIANIC HEADCANONS AND/OR MESSIANIC STORIES ARE NOT WELCOME.

WHEN: Start creating whenever you want, but the AO3 collection will be open from December 18-26 to accept works for this year's bingo. Masterposts on Tumblr will be posted each night (like... Hanukkah gifts for fandom, get it?)

WHY: Jewish characters and Jewish fans are often overlooked or erased during the Winter Holiday Season in favor of "Secret Santa" exchanges, Christmas-themed fics, and the idea that ~Hanukkah is Jewish Christmas~ (which spoiler for all fics in this bingo: it's not). This panfandom Bingo challenge is to celebrate Hanukkah on its own terms and give Jewish characters and fans a place to breathe. :)

HOW: The basic rules --

All fics must be at least 100 words long and focus on a Jewish or Jew-ish character celebrating Hanukkah (or the scifi/fantasy equivalent of Hanukkah).

All graphics and moodboards must be at least 3x3 (9 images or more in total included on the work) OR for traditionally drawn art, include at least one Jewish or Jew-ish character celebrating Hanukkah.

From December 18-26, post your work to the AO3 collection "hanukkahbingo" and/or post on Tumblr tagging @aimmyarrowshigh and #hanukkahbingo to be included in the nightly masterpost!

Since this Bingo grid is larger than the usual bingo card, you do not need to complete a full row or column to get a Bingo -- any five fills = a bingo. If you DO fill out the complete card, that's a Full Menorah (instead of a Blackout, because festival of lights... yuk yuk yuk).

You can fill as many squares as applicable in your work (so if your characters have an applesauce versus sour cream versus ketchup latke debate, that's 5 squares and a full bingo!), but each square must be at least 100 words or 3 images, so you cannot write one 100-word fic and claim that it fills 5 squares, etc. The above example of the applesauce versus sour cream versus ketchup latke debate fic would need to be at least 500 words.
