It had been three months since the galaxy was changed forever. In all honesty, however, you were not affected by the troublesome events, as you had no involvement with the Jedi nor the former Republic. In fact, the terrors that you heard about were simply just sad stories on the holomedia. Though, you could not help but to feel sorry for the fallen Jedi, as you had met a few throughout your life and were awed by their dedication and honor.
Once you had realized this, you were a bit saddened by the thought of an entire group of people that you would never be able to meet again.
The Outer Rim was a rather lonely place to live, but it was necessary for you to remain hidden from anyone who might wish to mess around with you. It was rare for you to stay in one place for too long, as you were constantly moving to different cities and planets to avoid getting too comfortable with the people in the area.
Dantooine, however, seemed to suit you nicely. In fact, you remained on the hillside of the planet for much longer than you had anywhere else. The area that you had found to live was quiet and rather uneventful. However, when you were in need of entertainment, you could occupy yourself at the small cantina in the center of the city at the bottom of the hill. The cantina, the most popular spot in your town, was where you received all of your news and any other information you might be interested in.
To ease your boredom one day, you decided to make a trip to the cantina for a few drinks and to catch up on the holomedia before heading back to work the next day. In the Outer Rim, time moved very slowly, and drinking was the best way to flash forward.
As you entered the cantina, the man behind the counter waved at you, gesturing to an empty stool at the bar. With a slight smile, you slid into the seat and watched while the owner concocted your favorite beverage. After he placed the glass in front of you, he reached for a towel to begin cleaning some of the empty cups that lined the bar. âDid you hear about that mess on Andelm IV?â You raised your eyebrow in silence as you eyed the man, âThey have some serious crime problems. Iâm hoping the citizens here donât get any ideas like that.â
You shook your head as you placed your empty glass in front of you, âIâm sure they wonât, at least not in our town, anyway. The people around here are much too peaceful for any sort of crime.â
The owner nodded and finished the rest of his work in silence. You shifted your attention to the holomedia channel that was flashing in front of you, allowing yourself to become lost in the outside world. Just as you were getting absorbed in a story about bad harvest season, the owner of the bar stepped in front of you with another glass in his hand. When he placed it down in front of you, you furrowed your brow. âI didnât order another.â
He gestured to the side, âThat man over there ordered it for you,â You remained seated as you shifted your attention to a man sitting in one of the bar stools at the other end. He had light hair with a beard that made him appear much older than he potentially was. There was something about his presence that intrigued you. âYou should go over there and say hello, Y/N. Youâve been in this town for quite some time, and I can tell that youâre lonely. Why donât you go make a friend?â
Without arguing, you allowed your curiosity to get the better of you as you made your way to the other end of the counter. With the free drink in your hand, you slid into the stool next to the stranger. âMay I ask why you ordered me a drink?â
He looked up at you with a slight smirk, âWhat? Is it unusual for people on this planet to be kind?â You cocked your head to the side as you examined his face, waiting for him to continue, âAlright, to be honest, you looked rather lonely, and what better conversation starter than a free drink.â
Finally, you returned the smile back and lifted the rim of the glass to your lips, allowing the alcohol to burn your throat for a moment. âWell, I appreciate it; I can never complain about anything that is free.â
âI hope you donât find me rude, but may I ask what someone like you is doing way out here in the Outer Rim? You certainly donât look like you belong, and I recognize your accent to be from the Core Worlds.â
You took another sip of your drink, âNow, it is unusual for people on this planet to ask such questions.â
âOh, wonât you humor a clueless outlander?â He smiled, showing his teeth, as he reached for his own glass.
âI used to be a spice-jacker when I was younger - accidentally got involved with some unforgiving pirates who swore they would be the death of me. Ever since, Iâve been hiding out in the Outer Rim,â You gestured toward him, âI believe itâs your turn now.â
He hesitated for a moment, âI suppose that you could say I was on the wrong side of the war...However, Iâm not usually on Dantooine. I am only here for a while...I ran into some trouble on Tatooine, so I decided to hide out before I went back.â
âThis is an excellent place for hiding,â You noted as you lifted your glass.
He did the same, âYou are not wrong.â
After a bit of conversation, you had learned that the manâs name was Ben Kenobi, and he was attempting moisture farming back on Tatooine. There was something about him that made you feel so comfortable - something that drew you into him.
The two of you had ordered a few more drinks while you continued talking. You werenât sure if it was the alcohol or the way Ben made you feel, but you felt as if you could tell him each and every one of your secrets, if he asked. During a pause of the conversation, you turned more serious, âWhy did you hesitate before you told me why you were here?â
âDid I?â He allowed his eyes to fall to the countertop as he played with the rim of his glass.
âYou did.â
âIt is possible that you misread me. But, I can only assume that you are going to insist that you didnât,â You were silent as he turned his head in the direction of the holomedia program that was playing. For a moment, he focused on the screen before turning back to you. âYou see that news story? The one about the Empire? That is why I am here.â
You furrowed your brow, âWere you a member of the Republic?â
âEven worse,â He began, âI was a Jedi.â
You felt your heart sank. You could only imagine the pain that he had felt when his fellow Jedi had been slaughtered. But, at the same time, there was a part of you that was excited - and rather hopeful - that not all of the Jedi had become extinct.
When you looked at Ben, however, you could see that there was something more than him just being a Jedi. You reached out to touch his arm softly, âWhat else?â
âMy dear, it is a very saddening story Iâm afraid. I would not want to bore you with such heavy information.â
You shook your head, âThroughout my life I have known a few Jedi, and I wish to know more about their story. Please, tell me everything that you can.â
With a deep sigh, he looked into his half-empty glass. There was no doubt in your mind that, if he had been sober, Ben would not have been sharing this information with you. However, you were curious, and you were not going to stop him. âI had trained a boy...His name was Anakin, and he was my apprentice. We had a prophecy, you see, and...Anakin was supposed to be the chosen one,â He paused for a moment while he shuddered at the thought, âAnakin...He...He was seduced by the dark side. He turned against the Order that he had been raised under. The young man that I had trained since he was a young boy...tried to kill me not too long ago. But, he is dead now.â
You were silent as you took in his words, âAnd you feel as if this is all your fault?â
Ben shot you a look, âI did not say that.â
âBut that is how you feel,â You looked into his eyes as you continued speaking, âYou feel that you did not train him well enough, that it is your fault he was seduced by the dark side. But, have you ever considered the maybe...maybe it was going to happen regardless of who trained him? I do not know you well, Ben Kenobi, but you do not seem like the type of man to allow this to happen. I do not believe it is your fault.â
For half of a second, Ben looked broken. He quickly composed himself, however, as he cleared his throat before he began, âYou are a very kind person,â He smiled lightly, âYou do not belong out here in the Outer Rim.â
You reached out and stroked his arm, âI do not believe you belong out here, either.â
Ben turned his head so that he was able to look at you. As you looked into his eyes, you were overwhelmed by the thought that this man was incredibly important, and that, perhaps, this was your destiny.
