Making embarrassing comics! I frequently refer to myself as a "nervous little squirrel," and the image of a frantic little rodent in my head became this silly character. (Externalizing your anxiety is a way to deal with it, right?) I'm playing with different variations and methods and trying to get out of my head and remember all of the inspiring things I learned doing @summerpierre's great comic making class. I think I need to get the timer out and turn the brain off and try to get down to the essence of this worrisome critter 😊
Acrylic painting practice - ivy is hard, guys! I actually had an awesome time making this one, though. The ideas of layering, layering, layering, pushing through the ugly stages, push and pull, highlight and shadow are finally starting to sink in a little. Every painting I actually spend the time on to finish feels like a huge learning process. Baby steps!
Recent paintings from my Instagram.
Oh yeah, this was supposed to go first...Fun fact: I started an Instagram! Let’s be friends.

A few things from my Instagram, where I’ve been a lot more active lately. (@startartchallenge) Of course the cat needed to sit *directly* on top of my sketchbook. (The one that looks sort of wave-y is the one he was sitting on. Thanks, Leo)
Some of the plant doodles are copied from this great video by @piccandle and some are my own creations inspired by said great video. Hooray for doodles!
Gotta start somewhere! Challenge: monochromatic flowers in vase, LifeBook 2016 lesson from Donna Downey. This was definitely way more difficult than I thought it would be. I should probably keep going and refining, but this is as far as my frustration/fear would let me go. Could be worse! 😊🎨 … #art #painting #acrylicpainting #lifebook #lifebook2016 #donnadowney #tamaralaporte #messy #flowers #stilllife
First go from my Saturday night painting party of one. Somehow I reblogged something totally different.
More Saturday night paint party of one. I’m posting this poorly lit pic of this mess of a silly “vision board” collage before I can chicken out. Something is better than nothing! . . . #art #artjournal #painting #mixedmedia #mixedmediaart #collage #lifebook #lifebook2016 #tamaralaporte #visionboard #iguess #ew #artfail
Woo most happenin Saturday night ever! Making art that would make Lisa Frank shudder! 😅
Little acrylic painting anniversary present for the husband. I actually tried on this one! Lots of layers and blending and trying to really pay attention to the reference. Could definitely be cleaner, have more depth, etc but it’s one of those things that looks mostly decent from far away :)
This is from a photo I found of San Diego (reference here) since, luckily, the real present was plane tickets for a weekend of circus and surfing down south!
Sneak peek at a little #comic in progress I’m trying to doodle out, based on a line from The Artist’s Way. It might be something! … #art #doodle #sketchbook #wip #drawing #cartoon #sketch #artjunkie #artistsway #inprogress
Fun fact: I made an Instagram for StartArtChallenge! Wanna be friends?
(Again, with tumblr really ruining my day by not letting me do things as my secondary blog. Guess I won’t actually be sharing from the app. Oh, well!)

Work in progress on the first spread in my art journal (the rest of it is almost all filled - for some reason these first pages were scary!).
Mixed media and collage are still something of a mystery of layering to me, but I think I’m slowly figuring it all out.
I MADE A THING!
A multi-step challenge! By me, for me, for fun. Lots of things I've never done before. (Bad ukulele music also by me) Step 1: Fill one sketchbook. Did it take you 2 years? That’s ok! Is it a hot mess? Awesome. Step 2: Figure out how to film a flip-through video. Without an actual tripod, if you're me. Is it also a mess? Carry on! Step 3: Figure out how to use movie editing software for the first time ever to turn the video the right side up because you definitely filmed it upside down. Step 4: Realize you have no idea how to find public domain background music. Decide to play your own silly little ukulele tune. Step 5: Figure out how to use music recording software. Regret decision to play your own background music. Step 6: Battle with software to combine video and music files that are not the same length. Step 7: Eh, good enough. Save that sucker.
There are a few things that making this silly little video made me realize:
I can fill an entire notebook! I completed something, there is proof right up there. (Even if I started it back in 2014)
I don’t usually think of my sketchbooks as a whole, and it was so interesting to see this one as a singular, complete thing. I can see how things in my mind stayed the same and how they changed. I can see all the times I start to sketch out the lightest pencil possible and then abandon it. I can see when I tell myself I don’t need to draw and I can just write.
HAHA oh goodness gracious I love playing music but oh it is not my forte, especially with the pressure of recording.
I can push through the uncomfortableness/fear/embarrassment of putting myself out there and trying new things. (Like, many new things. Sharing an entire full notebook that has a lot of my soul in it, filming a video of it, editing that video, “composing” and recording ukulele music and LETTING PEOPLE HEAR IT, starting a YouTube channel)
I’m just pleased with what I accomplished compared to Previous Me and that is good enough for me. Making bad art in order to eventually make good art = win.
Trying to get back into playing with all of my acrylics! This is a hot mess but whatever. I’m slowly figuring out highlights and shadows, and building from light to dark and actually paying attention to where and how all of those things should go. At least it’s something!
Balcony + cat + Artist's Way. Not a bad Monday morning.
I’m alive, and slowly getting back to making art! (Life happens and it’s easy to find yourself underwater)
We went camping over the 4th and I brought tons of watercolor stuff and tried not to let myself get frustrated over the gap between my imagination and my skills. #progress!

April is around the corner, which means it’s nearly time for NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month). Each April, I join hundreds, perhaps thousands, of other writers around the world in attempting to write a poem a day for 30 days. This will be my 3rd year participating in the challenge. Sounds great, right? And yet I am starting to feel separation anxiety from comics. We have been enjoying a great romance. What will become of comics when April rolls around?
I can't wait to see your poems as comics! :D
