Hi! What are your thoughts on Danny's parents? I know a lot of people (especially in fics) hc them as neglectful and/or abusive- how's your reboot going to handle em?
i mean they’re just kind of bumbling innit? they mean well. they don’t always do well, because pobody’s nerfect, but they clearly try to bond with their kids and danny’s 100% sure that they’d accept him no matter what if he’s in a pinch, which says to me they’re overall good parents that he has a lot of trust in. besides, if they were overly doting when their kids were going through adolescence, i’d be more worried - the whole point of the teenage years is for kids to figure shit out.
Not to mention they’ve already gone through that with jazz (who was so self-sufficient she honestly didn’t need their help even if it was offered), so it’s totally understandable that they’re lax with danny. up until the recent slipping grades and broken chemistry sets, he’s been a really good kid, and i personally always felt that their general quote-unquote “neglect” was more a sign of trust than of not wanting anything to do with their kid.
they have their lives, he’s starting to live his independent from them, and it’s honestly a good idea to give teens that kind of space, as long as they know they can still go to you if they need anything - and he does, ultimately.
for what reason does he not tell them? it’s clear that, relatively early on, it’s not because he’s afraid that they’ll wilfully hurt him even when they know it’s him (again, he outright tells vlad that his parents will accept him no matter what, and it’s something he’s very confident in); it’s probably just because it’d be a pain in the ass. like, they’ll definitely try to use that as a way to bond with him, which...yknow, one of the things he does find annoying about them is how, shall we say, “enthusiastic” they get about ghost stuff; there’s also no way they wouldn’t make it super public super fast, most likely by accident (enthusiasm), they’ll probably get really really worried for his safety and well-being, which would cramp his style (by the time he’s expressed that he’s sure his parents would be fine with him, he’s starting to figure this ghost shit out. also teenagers have a thing called the personal fable, worth a read), he might genuinely worry it’ll put them in danger (i mean vlad already wants to kill his dad, and while they’re competent ghost fighters, like, do you really want YOUR parents on the battlefield with you when your impression of them is “largely bumbling”?), and there’s also a not-insignificant chance he'll get in trouble for keeping such a BIG and DANGEROUS secret for as long as he had. because, uh, yeah, if i had a kid and knew that kid was regularly risking his life without telling me, i’d probably have a really strong emotional reaction to it before i could calm down and talk with them rationally.
danny and his friends also have TERRIBLE foresight, so while it may make total sense from an adult POV to tell your parents, risking the short-term fallout for the long-term safety net, understanding, and stability...frankly, i think that’d be out of character for these dumb kids (especially when sam’s one of his biggest peer influences and she's deep in the throes of teenage rebellion). if danny really does trust that his parents will accept him - and he does - then yeah, his life would be way, way easier if they knew...but also, then he’d have to deal with all that other stuff and it’s like a total pain in the ass and it’s fine, the status quo is fine, he’s handling it, we don’t really need to tell them, do we?
i bet jazz is sitting to the side like ugh danny you really should tell them but ugh it’s not my place to tell them in your stead so urghgghhg
