There is no accident in Trump referring to MS-13 gang members as animals and there is no accident in the way his reference was reported and, maybe, muddled. And, most importantly, there is no accident in a witting public taking Trump’s ‘side’ in a debate that isn’t happening.

There is an interesting through line with MS-13 and Donald Trump and immigration and propaganda that is just waiting for somebody with a closer understanding of political discourse throughout history to really investigate. But that person is not on this staff and is not looking to fill up your Saturday with a slightly elusive but almost clear concept.

I loved Mindhunter mostly for the portrayal of Ed Kemper.  Ed Kemper is a fascinating dude.  On one hand, he’s a giant psychopathic murderer.  On the other, he had a near-genius IQ and a certain affable, honest personality that was hard not to be drawn to.

Kemper did some really messed up stuff, no doubt.  But at the same time, he was failed at pretty much every single level, by both his parents and the state.

Both his parents took turns abandoning and abusing him, and he was left with his abusive grandparents…who he promptly killed.  He was sent to a psych prison, where upon release, it was recommended that he never have contact with his mother ever again.

The state, being the geniuses they are when it comes to issues of mental health, put him right back at home with his mother.  His mother continued to abuse him, making him stay in the basement and telling the family it was because he would rape his sisters.

Yadda yadda yadda (FF to 3:45 to see how he feels about his mother), Ed Kemper is my fifth favorite serial killer because of his unfliching, affable honesty in interviews, the fact he was fuckin’ massive at 6′9″ and over 300 lbs, and, when you combine that with his 136 IQ 145 IQ, it’s just all around a pretty terrifying image.

If there is one thing I hear often in my travels for this job, it is a constant rfrain of requests for more mock drafts. There are very few outlets doing them and there is an endless demand for them.

WE’RE BREAKIN’ ALL THE RULES TODAY!!!!!

My grandfather passed away in the middle of the night, one week ago today. He lived 81 full years, and died peacefully in his own home. He’s survived by his wife of 61 years, 5 siblings, 5 daughters, and a whole mess of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

He was the most effortlessly charming person I’ve ever seen, and I know you all would have loved meeting him. To give you an idea of the power of his charisma, he settled in a decidedly blue-collar logging/mill town in the middle of early-1980s Maine as a guy with a funny foreign accent who insisted on wearing AT LEAST business casual clothes in public at all times, and was instantly embraced as a beloved member of the community. Small-town Mainers are typically wary of those “from away,” especially those with means. There was none of that suspicion when it came to my Grampa, though. It was impossible for him to be an outsider, because he was always welcome everywhere.
