Anytime I try to do a rough nâ ready sketch in the style of @blvnk-art I fail... mostly because no one can emulate Blvnk and I really should stop trying but either way, hereâs a Harry for you all.
excuse me while I pick my jaw up from the floor
A little more inktober
It deeply saddens me that "pdf file" has become slang for pedo. Don't you dare disrespect my wife the beautiful portable document format ever again
and to the children in the notes saying we need this fucking baby talk to get around censorship online; there's been no credible evidence that any site other that YouTube (which will only demonetize your video, ftr) will actually censor or hide content that include words like rape, pedophile, gun, terrorist, etc. etc. and even if we take as a given they were (which, again, they are not), do not fucking comply in advance, you absolute fucking coward. and ESPECIALLY do not comply by altering your real life fucking vocabulary. don't let the technocrats dictate what words you say holy fucking shit dude!!!!!!!!!!!!

This man
harry + forgiveness
I keep returning to this piece and can't help but feel like too many details are literally invisible, so here's a close-up
I never read Cursed Child but if Harry is mediocre in it like the person below said then it's more proof it's garbage. The boy who was praised by Viktor, managed to get through the Tournament tasks meant for 7th years, successfully taught peers and older students in 5th year, got an O on DaDa, was called talented by Dumbledore and managed to get through all types of trials by himself is mediocre at fighting? Jesus, I wish that cursed drama didn't exist.
đ
POA: The dementors and Harryâs grief.
Caveat: It is not possible to fully diagnose fictional characters.
In PoA, we are first introduced to the Dementors, who symbolize depression. In this meta I am going to argue that Harryâs journey of overcoming the dementors in PoA, serve as a means to process and explore his grief for his parents.
1.0 Suppressed traumatic grief
Harry first interacts with the dementors in chapter 5 of the book (aptly titled âThe Dementorâ) and Harry reacts very viscerally to their presence:
âHarryâs eyes rolled up into his head. He couldnât see. He was drowning in cold. There was a rushing in his ears as though of water. He was being dragged downward, the roaring growing louderâ PoA
He also begins to hear screams:
âAnd then, from far away, he heard screaming, terrible, terrified, pleading screams. He wanted to help whoever it was, he tried to move his arms, but couldnâtâ
The reader (and Harry) later learn that these screams are his mothers. But at this moment he canât identify the voice and it feels âfar awayâ.
This perceived distance can be seen as a symbol for how deeply Harry has suppressed both the trauma and the grief of his parentâs death. Indeed in traumatic grief (defined for this purpose as bereavement associated with a traumatic event), avoidance can often occur (Baker et al. 2016).
This includes the suppression of feelings and thoughts surrounding the loss. Additionally at this point of his life, Harry has never had a space to explore his grief in a healthy way.
There is also a powerlessness in Harry âwanting to helpâ but not being able to and Powerlessness is often a feeling which accompanies traumatic experiences in life.
In Chapter 9 (Grim Defeat) Harry falls from his broom because of the dementors.
â Harry felt sick and humiliated every time he thought of them. Everyone said the dementors were horrible, but no one else collapsed every time they went near one. â
This is the second time that Harry has experienced physical symptoms because of the dementors. And in his seminal book âThe body keeps the scoreâ Bessel van der Kolk notes:
âWe have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.â
This book lays the foundation for the idea that trauma can often manifest as physical symptoms and in Harryâs case this includes becoming so overwhelmed by the suppressed trauma that he faints. And the unlocking of this memory Harry begins to experience flashbacks (another symptom of trauma.
â He had heard her words, heard them over and over again during the night hours in the hospital wing while he lay awake, staring at the strips of moonlight on the ceilingâŚâŚ..he heard the last moments of his motherâs life, her attempts to protect him, Harry, from Lord Voldemort, and Voldemortâs laughter before he murdered her. â
Therefore it can be argued that Harry is suffering from traumatic grief.
2.0 The Dementorâs lessons as a form of therapy
During his lessons with Lupin, Harry begins to grapple with the effect of the dementors. And within this safe environment (with a trusted adult) he begins to process his trauma.
At first Harry grapples with the intrusive thought that he wants to hear his motherâs voice. A yearning that comes from having not known her. Despite the memory being traumatic and that trauma causing him to collapse, Harry clings to it:
âAny second now, he might hear his mother again . . . but he shouldnât think that, or he would hear her again, and he didnât want to ... or did heâ
In the next round of Harry v Boggart Dementor he hears his father for the first time and
âHarry suddenly realized that there were tears on his face mingling with the sweat. He bent his face as low as possible, wiping them off on his robesâ
This is the first time since encountering the dementors that Harry has had any form of emotional release. And in the next round:
â The screaming inside Harryâs head had started again â except this time, it sounded as though it were coming from a badly tuned radio â softer and louder and softer again.â
Having experienced some emotional release, Harry is able to stand his ground against the physical symptoms, although they (like the softer screams) are not completely absent:
âHarryâs legs felt like water, he was still on his feet â though for how much longer, he wasnât sureâ
Grief is a messy, complex thing which never has a neat solution. Indeed, we all react differently to it. But through learning to fight the dementors Harry begins processing his repressed grief.

Do you do fic recs?
If yes, what are your favourite Harry centric fics? Preferably ones that deal with angst and/or his mental illness/struggles. (Also, preferably gen, but either way)
Thank you :)
Quite literally everything by @floreatcastellumposts
My favourites are:
The series: The Aurors & Hollow Ash
Hollow Ash especially is my favourite - the character work she does with Harry in this is SO rich. The Aurors is a police procedural and Hollow Ash is this slow, building mystery with a villain that felt birthed out of the song-poem vibe of Deathly Hallows.
One shots
Trouble
Harry meets Mark Evans, the boy Dudley bullied in beginning of OOTP.
Orphanages
A moment from the camping trip of Deathly Hallows.
Coal
Two Christmases - one with Dursleys and one without.
(btw, her Tumblr a lot exploration of Harry and Dursleys. You should check it out).
Tumblr stuff:
Harry turning teacher's hair blue
Harry stealing cake
Police men
First burst of magic
And this one:
Settle our bones by @ssnuffles
Wonderful, wonderful work with Harry and Sirius. AU! Sirius lives.
Colour Me Love (an old one from fanfic net)
Pre-canon. Harry discovers he has parents and they don't mean "Aunt" and "Uncle".
There are more, I am sure. :D but I can't think of them right now.
Harry and Hermione were not your average everymen
I have often seen people say Harry, since he's supposed to be relatable to the average reader, is average in pretty much every way - smarts, skills, looks... and that's such a poor understanding of what relatable means, especially in a fantasy setting. Relatable means being able to relate to someoneâs struggle. Being relatable as a protagonist means not being perfect, not being inaccessible, not being a genius or a prodigy that can solve all things themselves. Someone the reader can root for, but also hope they can become one day. Meaning, no - Harry was not average in skills or looks, and maybe not even smarts. There is a fine line between a genius supermodel and average. Harry has already shown he isnât average in many ways. The fact he's so talented in Defense and Flying. The fact he's managed EE marks in all important subjects, despite being under stress.
When it comes to his looks, I doubt he was average. Average means forgettable or plain. Thatâs not what we know of Harry or what Rowling has said about his parents either. James was supposedly good looking, reasonably so next to his friend Sirius. Meaning his looks supported his popularity, but he was not striking like Sirius. James was also a talented boy, said by Rowling and proven by the text (and not just in Quidditch). Lily Evans was a very good looking woman and Harry has already some of her genes. (Again, Lily was also very bright and one of the best Potions students in Hogwarts.) Harry has jet black hair, bright almond green eyes, great skin and attracted Cho Chang. I believe a combination of all this knowledge suggests Harry isnât plain looking or forgettable at all, and neither average in talent and skills, as his parents werenât either. He's boyishly handsome and above average, but unassumingly and subtly so. Not conventionally striking like Cedric, but quite memorable and pleasing to the eye. He's very talented. He is not supposed to be average, the everyman in every facet of life. Thatâs not how relatability works as a fantasy child protagonist. To balance his personality, skills and looks (with the scar, pleasant face and green eyes), he was given flaws, anger, trauma, low self-esteem, friendship struggles and many more. Thatâs how the reader relates to Harry.
Now onto Hermione. Apparently she is average in her smarts too, since female readers are supposed to relate to her and aspire to be like her. An everywoman hardworking girl which every girl can become sort of thing. That is again, not how this works. Rowling herself has called her a borderline genius, meaning that no - Rowling's intention was never to make her protagonists average everymen in all these essential traits. That is bullshit. Hermione is a highly intelligent girl. To make her relatable and balance out her brains, she was given a plain awkward appearance and a strong, annoying personality.
Hope it's understandable now that being a relatable protagonist does not mean being stripped of special or great skills, but merely being emotionally accessible to the reader and having a balance of talent, above average traits and flaws. Readers are supposed to be inspired by these protagonists, but also root for them and see themselves in them - emotionally. They are not supposed to be flashy in looks or complete geniuses like Dumbledore - that could throw the reader off. And if they have a talent, it's balanced by emotional teenage flaws. To automatically dismiss the fact Harry wasnât average in skills and looks dismisses what we canonically know of his skills and looks, and to me, sounds ignorant on purpose.
I think the only truly average thing about Harry is his name. Your point about his personality makes a lot of sense â giving him depth and struggles humanizes him rather than making him an ordinary character, especially since he's the protagonist. While his name is pretty ordinary, that very name ends up representing the entire saga. It certainly indicates (an obvious correlation) that there's nothing mediocre about it.
And your point about Hermione is spot on too. I must say there are different kinds of intelligence. Just because her intelligence is more logical, strict, and analytical doesn't make her average or someone anyone could easily replicate academically. She had a lot of motivation and genuine interest â based on what she studied objectively as facts â to pursue something like a political career, for example. Underestimating the character by comparing types of intelligence is quite disconnected from how reality itself actually works.
Those who claim Harry is average are dim, shallow readers who lacks critical thinking skills and has not been exposed to larger literary or educational sectors. They basically howl together like a pack of wolves because its cheap and easy to go with the flow of the fandom instead of stepping aside and analyzing as an individual thinker. We are supposed to relate to his personality, his unwillingness to be a child soldier, his trauma, his internal battles, his flaws.
Harry was intelligent and powerful in his own right. If such an alarming number of people read seven books about him and failed to grasp that, then I'm afraid we are living amongst a rather dumb population. I said what I said.
