i always thought it was funny how in the lord of the rings sam and frodo head out and after awhile sam’s like “mr. frodo if i take one more step this is the farthest from the shire ive ever been” and then a ways after they meet up with merry and pippin on their daily vegetable run like jesus christ sam get out of the house once in awhile

it’s a shame tolkien didnt see the humor in sam remarking “now THIS is the farthest from the shire i’ve ever been” with each new step he took until he reached mount doom

ngl though it would kind of fuck if he said it right after they destroyed the ring

Okay but in all fairness Merry and Pippin are from totally different parts of the shire than Sam and Frodo. At the point when they run into each other they are seemingly within easy walking distance from Buckleberry Ferry, which means they are much, much closer to Merry's home than they are to Sam and Frodo's. Pippin is a lot farther from home, but Tooks gonna Took, ya know.
