In Greek mythology, Typhon is the ultimate embodiment of volcanic chaos and the deadliest monster to challenge Zeus. Born to Gaia and Tartarus, he is characterized by a colossal dual nature: a muscular human torso that transitions below into a mass of writhing, coiled vipers instead of legs. His hands end in clusters of living, fire-spitting serpent heads, and his jaw is capable of breathing devastating sheets of flame, elements that ancient Greeks used to allegorically explain the destructive, scorching forces of nature. Due to his chaotic rebellion against the gods, he was ultimately defeated by Zeus's thunderbolts and imprisoned beneath Mount Etna, linking his eternal, trapped fury directly to volcanic eruptions. Historically, Typhon was heavily conflated with Set, the Egyptian deity of dark chaos and storms, which explains the symbolic crocodile appearing at his feet.
This specific engraving comes from Willem Goeree’s Mosaize historie der Hebreeuwse Kerke, published in Amsterdam in 1700, where Typhon is analyzed not merely as a classical myth, but as a pagan, historical reflection of biblical evil and the Fall.

Do you know that Rome has the sea? Ostia is the thirteenth district of Rome, the only one that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. In Ostia there is a marina, the Port of Rome, a lovely seafront and, going south, kilometers of beautiful Mediterranean scrub. To the north there is the mouth of the Tiber with the archaeological area of Ostia Antica, the port of the ancient Romans, and the hexagonal port of Trajan.
