 SHE DIDN'T EVEN HEAR HIM COME INTO THE BATHROOM,     let alone slip into shower behind her. she jolts in surprise at the low timbre of his voice, but relaxes at the familiarity of his chest against her back.    “   it's not mine.   ”      she murmurs, shower water slapping tile the only sound between them.  she hasn't seen him quite this tender  —  washing blood from her shoulder like she'll shatter if he presses too hard.   the worst of it's on her forearms.    which have mostly faded to pink, with small splatters all over her.  she turns so she faces him, shoulders sagging with exhaustion.    “    i'm so tired of losing people. it's never going to end.    ”     mocha eyes have less spark, less life, to them.  she's built on exhaustion now.   she rarely lets herself crumble but she leans her forehead against his sternum with a sharp breath in through her nose.   how much more of this are they gonna have to take?  how many more losses?   she doesn't know if she can survive much more.

SHE'S BEEN DESPONDENT SINCE THEY LEFT EDGAR'S.     she's not good for anyone.  people die whenever she comes near.  how long until it's him?  until it's hughie, or kimiko, or the others?  presses her palms into her eyes as she sits beside him on the bed, his shirt a comfort.  she's going to steal it when she slips out.    “    you need to run.   ”     she says quietly, a tiredness seeping into her tone like it's not done thusfar.  any light, any spark, is completely gone.  it's overwhelming, the realization they're losing.  she leans close, rests her forehead against his.  fingers hook into his collar to keep him close a long moment.    “    i can't be the reason something happens to you.  so you should pack everything you need and run as far as you can from here.  away from me.  everyone who's anywhere near me ends up dead or covered in blood.    “    you gotta learn to let people take care of you.   she can't.  the last person to take care of her was her mother, and that was purely for her own gain.      “    all that blood today -    ”     her breath catches.  all of them in that tiny room - no idea whose blood it was - was enough to devastate her.  she drops her hand and slowly pulls back,  drawing her knees up to her chest.      “    i can't have that be you.    ”
