An except from our interview in Issue No. 5 with Travis Hocutt:
Your work seems to blur boundaries between scientific experimentation and artistic discourse. What role do you think research plays in your work, and do you see your work as closer to one discipline over the other?
I think that art and science are similar in the intense attention that people give a particular idea, and I hope for my work to combine the obsessive intellectual investigation of a scientific experiment with a similarly focused aesthetic exploration. Research is a huge part of my work. Every new project is precluded by a long research phase during which I gather information, and often teach myself new skills.

An except from our interview in Issue No. 5 with Karel Funk:
In a lot of your paintings you choose not to include the subject’s gaze. Could you talk a little bit about this? That’s another idea I’ve been interested in. When you’re in a subway car or on a busy street corner or in an elevator, you’re super-close to strangers—you’re shoulder-to-shoulder, or the back of their head is inches from your face, and nobody looks at each other because a lot of people just want to hide themselves to make it as comfortable as possible, not having their gazes interact. I felt like I wanted to try and do that in the portraits, too: you can be a stranger staring at a stranger’s details intimately without them being aware of it. Quite often that’s why I turn the subject and the portrait away from the viewer, so you don’t see their eyes. Or, if you do see their eyes, it’s in profile and the eyes are closed. It allows you to sort of be a voyeur into their intimate details without any communication back from the subject of the portrait.

An except from our interview in Issue No. 5 with Donovan Wylie:
How do you think photography has changed since you first began?
Photography has become more complicated in a good way. I think that photography is so much more conceptually driven now, and I really love that. I think the best photography is idea-driven, and that those ideas are inherent within the subject. The best photographers make fantastic photographs — you want to look at them. I think that the richness and depth of photography, the maturity of photography, is so much more than when I was younger; however, sometimes I look at a Tony Ray Jones picture and just think it’s genius... For me what’s exciting, when I get my buzz off, is seeing photography that shows me something I haven’t seen before and makes me think in a way I haven’t thought before.
