"You ready to go?" Steve called as he carried their bags downstairs.
"Almost!" Nancy replied from her home office. "I just need to finish this article."
Steve set the bags by the front door and made his way to her office. Leaning against the doorframe, he smiled.
"Baby, you know you can finish when we get back, right?"
Nancy swiveled her chair to face him. "I know, but the deadline is tomorrow, Steve, and we'll be at the beach all weekend. I'm almost done. I promise."
Steve let out a dramatic sigh before walking over to her. He bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.
"Okay. But don't work too hard."
Nancy smiled into the kiss. "I won't."
Steve started to walk away before stopping in the doorway.
"You've got five minutes to finish that article, or I'm leaving without you."
Nancy laughed. "You're an idiot, Steve Harrington."
He grinned and leaned back into the doorway.
"You are beautiful, Nancy Wheeler."
A blush spread across Nancy's cheeks as Steve disappeared down the hall.
Outside, Steve loaded the last of their bags into the back of his truck. Once everything was packed, he slipped a small velvet ring box from his jacket pocket.
He opened it carefully, smiling at the diamond sparkling inside.
After one year of dating again, he was finally going to ask Nancy Wheeler to marry him.
Lost in thought, he didn't hear the front door open.
"What are you looking at?"
Nancy was walking toward him with a curious smile.
"Ohānothing." He quickly snapped the ring box and slipped it back into his pocket.
Nancy raised an eyebrow. "You sure?" She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Yeah," Steve said with a nervous smile. "I'm sure."
He slid his arms around her waist and kissed her softly. After a moment, he pulled away and rested his forehead against hers.
"Now get in the truck before we're late."
Nancy smiled. "Yes, sir."
She turned and walked toward the passenger side. As she reached the door, Steve gave her a playful smack on her ass.
Nancy jumped and gasped. "Steve!"
He burst out laughing. "What? I couldn't fucking resist!"
Nancy shook her head, trying not to laugh herself.
"And yet, you still love me."
"I do," she admitted with a smile.
Steve climbed into the driver's seat while Nancy settled into the passenger seat. He started the truck, reached across the center console, and intertwined his fingers with hers.
Steve smiled, backed out of the driveway, and together they headed toward the beachāand the surprise that would change their lives forever.
Steve pulled the truck into the hotel parking lot and turned off the engine. He glanced over at Nancy with a smile. "Weāre here."
"Finally!" Nancy laughed as she climbed out of the truck and stretched her arms over her head. "That three-hour drive felt like forever."
Steve got out and walked around to her side.
"Tell me about it." He leaned down and gave her a quick kiss. "Iām going to check us in, okay?"
Nancy watched him jog toward the hotel lobby.
A few minutes later, Steve returned, twirling the room key on his finger. "Weāre all set.ā
Nancy was staring out toward the ocean, a soft smile spreading across her face as the waves rolled onto the shore.
āHm?" She turned to him. "Oh. Youāve got the key."
Steve nodded but noticed the distant look in her eyes. āEverything okay?"
Nancy looked back at the water. "Yeah⦠itās justā¦" she shrugged. āJonathan never really wanted to come to the beach. He was always busy taking pictures or working on something."
Steve slipped his hand into hers. "Well, Iām not Jonathan." He smiled warmly. "And I canāt think of anyone Iād rather spend a day at the beach with than you.ā
Nancyās smile grew. āYeah,ā she said softly. āI like the sound of that.ā
She squeezed his hand before grinning. āNow can we go grab our stuff? I really want to get in the water.ā
Steve chuckled. āYes, maāam.ā
He grabbed their bags from the truck, and together they headed toward their hotel room.
The moment they stepped inside, Nancy grabbed her beach bag. āIāll be right back.ā
A few minutes later, she emerged from the bathroom wearing her favorite new bikini.
Steve looked upāand immediately forgot what he was doing. He smiled, shaking his head. āWowā¦ā
Nancy raised an eyebrow. āWhat?ā
āYou look fucking gorgeous, Nance.ā
A blush crept onto her cheeks. āStop.ā
āIām serious,ā he walked over, resting his hands gently on her waist. āYouāre fucking beautiful.ā
Nancy smiled before her eyes drifted down to his swim trunks. She laughed. āReally? Those old swim trunks again?ā
Steve looked down at them. āWhat? These are classics.ā
Nancy couldnāt help but laugh. āYou couldāve bought a new pair.ā
āI could have,ā Steve admitted with a grin, ābut I know these are your favorite.ā
She rolled her eyes playfully. āGod, I fucking love you.ā
Steve smiled, took her hand, and led her out the door. To the beach.
