Let's go over the dance scene, shall we? Might be a study on the dance scene (of course personal interpretation)
This will be a long post starting from where Jonathan first see Teddy that night.
The way Pine looked at Teddy for the first time that night "Teddy" almost spontaneously came out of his mouth, wasn't expecting to see Teddy in his see through shirt with the chest out. I bet he wasn't expecting Teddy to be that bold and actually look really good, Jonathan obviously can't hide that he enjoys the view.
What even funnier is that Pine's own white shirt is also a see through, it more apparent if it's under the sunlight.
So it's like "I was planning to seduce you with my outfit, but you're one step a head to seduce me with this unholy see through!"
Teddy definitely win this one.
THEN TEDDY EVEN GAVE HIM CUTE NICK NAME "MATEO" The cherry on top to disarm him even more.
Man was thirsty and it wasn't because of the sexy girl with her exposed back but the see through black shirt was more appealing to him at this moment.
Pine's eyes were always on Teddy the moment he walked in the room, first watch we might be thinking that he's wary around Teddy because Juan just hand him a ticket back to Paris, considering about his next move, but now we knew there's layer to Jonathan's interest toward Teddy, he's inspecting his beauty and his elegance and wondering how something so pretty could be this cruel.
And he just couldn't take his eyes off of him even Juan called him on that, where he just couldnât finish his wine, eyes on roxy x teddy, Juan thought Pine was jealous of Roxana with Teddy, but from the camera angle that's so focus on Teddy, which is Pine's point of view we definitely knew that his eyes were on Teddy the entire time instead of at Roxana.
When Teddy joining back to dance with roxana and pine, roxana picked up on it that all he wanted was Pine because he had had plenty of her before so she lead the way for Teddy to have Pine all for himself, and Teddy at first was going strong, he didnât back off at all,
Teddy's small smile and his eyes looking downward focusing nowhere else rather than on Pine's lips, he really about to went for a kiss here if Pine wasn't being a coward and back away, I think Teddy was surprised even when he looked up, "oh you didn't want this?"
eyes downwards only looking at Pineâs lips and then he pushed forward almost like heâs planning to kiss him but Jonathan back off almost like heâs seeking solace in Roxana present behind his back lmao đ man was surprised that Teddy really was not playing around.
Teddy didnât stop, still going strong with riling Pine up with Roxyâs help, guiding Pine more than she guided Teddy, Teddy didnât need it much because he knows what he wanted but Pine still has a hard time deciding, hence when Teddy wanted to indulge in a kiss Pine looked the other way again, depriving himself of his own desire. But it didnât last long, his denial, his body catching up of what he really wanted and urged him to act on it.
Then Jonathan folded, succumbed to his own need, running his hand on Teddy's shoulder then down his back, (his hand was so pretty and slender so many times I watched I wasnât sure it was his or roxana lmao) so this was his hand wanting to embrace Teddy and be closer to him,
The more I think about this particular way Jonathan wanted to hold Teddy and almost wanting to lay his head on his shoulder the sadder I became because not only Teddy but Jonathan himself is freaking lonely and lost and just drifting through life and suddenly he met Teddy, they connected despite all odds and their circumstances, he just want to be loved too.
Jonathan is touch starved as much as Teddy, he just want to be held by Teddy and want to hold him, there's a magnetic pull that even Pine himself couldn't explain why he just wanted to be close to this man, so he didnât use his brain no more too tired to reason and acted on his instinct afterwards.
Then Teddy lay his head on his back, almost like a little clue for Jonathan to pick up on that he wanted him and clearly Jonathan was so affected by all of this already and this time it was clearer for him that he wanted it now.
Thatâs why he moved his hand down south almost as the answer to Teddy laying his head on his back that he wanted him too, but Of course Teddy need to school his hand back to itâs place almost like well, you were playing hard to get first, now you are not gonna get this easily either.
(Though I think the reason why Teddy didnât want Jonathan hand on his ass was because theyâre on public space lol he knows Juan is watching, and if anyone grabbing anyone ass, it should be him, to maintain his tough personađ he is the boss after all and in mafia world I think itâs more acceptable if they perceive you as the top, thereâs a whole other discourse about this)
I truly also appreciate this little gesture they throw here with Teddy moving Pineâs hand away from his ass because we are used to usually see the villain being depicted as someone who like to cross other people boundaries but in this case it's the villain who basically have to school the protagonist đ
Itâs groundbreaking because usually it's our protagonist who have to put themselves in such a risky situation with a bad guy where they might be treated in a way they don't want it but have to endure for the mission. But here we see Jonathan Pine who basically suggesting something more beyond just dancing, We have a protagonist who is such a simp that the villain have to stop his hand from going south, so we know itâs quite mutual between them.
Jonathan dedication to espionage is remarkable because he actively want to insert himself in sticky situations, he just want the danger, this man is too reckless for his own good. ( or Pine is just a horndog and he wants that colombian meat so badly he's embarrassing himself like that, man Jonathan u need to keep it in your pants, u can't get your way into his bed with dance only, this one needs you to expose insecurities n trauma first before he kiss you.)
Next is this scene where Jonathan's eyes fluttered helplessly, not sure if wanted to savor this moment by closing his eyes fully or keep it open to really see Teddy up close (there's even a hint of shyness in the way he acted here like for the first time in his mission he's not sure if he's pretending or not) and Teddy also looking up to really see Pine in this moment,
"Is he such a good liar or is he just really a man seeking for connection?"
Both were questioning themselves about what is this new found feeling that rose in their chest?
Why they're so attracted toward each other to this extent while they barely knew each other? The first question of love that bloom from such an unlikely place with someone they both least expected. Pine's eyes keep looking downward seeking Teddy's lips. He wants to kiss him so badly now, Wants Teddy to be bold and made a move on him again, Pine realized he couldn't take what he's not offered after Teddy moved his hand earlier from his ass, so he just wait that this villain would take a pity on him and kiss him now that heâs ready.
And this was the moment when Teddy really disappeared and Eduardo Vidal appeared to the surface, caught off guard by this feeling of wanting to know how does it feel like to love this man,
And Pine was drunk in this feeling, he barely have control over it anymore, surrender it to the moment.
The gentleness in Teddyâs eyes, those werenât the eyes of a killer, itâs just a gaze of very vulnerable man who has trust issues and suddenly has this pull of attraction toward the man in front of him that he wanted to sent off tomorrow to france to never see again.
Thatâs why he was so angry in the boat when he almost certain that Pine has been lying to him
âYou are so full of shit, you have been lying to me since the moment that we metâ the emphasize in the moment they first met clearly gave it away that Teddy had become sentimental and had fall for Pine at that Tennyâs court, it was love at first sight for Teddy, this wasnât easy at all for Teddy, Matthew should be nothing else but a target for money, but he just couldnât help himself but falling for him.
And thatâs also why he was so relieved later on the boat when the money came through so he didnât have to kill the man that he really rather keep it alive and was truly regretful to the point he took him to church just for forgiveness, and later took him to lunch and open up about himself,
Because thatâs all he ever wanted with pine, if the circumstances were different, want to take him out to a proper date, get to know each other better and finally if heâs lucky, they could actually have something with each other,
He wants him but not in this circumstance.
They both make up their mind and finally wanted the kiss to happen, they almost went for it but Roxana break their moment , it was so close, if she gave them just few more second then that kiss would have happened here because Teddyâs lips were ready and so did Jonathan, he was the one who dragged their perfect sloshed noses from the top to the tip of Teddyâs nose with his own, the direction was clear, the next move was Teddyâs lips đ
After Roxana breaks them apart he didnât even open his eyes after fully after losing contact with Teddyâs face he only open it again to really see into Teddyâs eyes.
This was the moment when Matthew disappeared and Jonathan finally appeared with the soft eyes looking at Teddy just as Teddy touched him gently wondering in his head,
"How can a man this cruel could touch me this gentle? How does it feel like to be loved by this kind of man?"
Almost like sensing all the questions in Pineâs gentle eyes, Teddy took a pity on him, and know he should really gave him a kiss, his eyes are begging for it, so he went forward and bumped their nose before they part.
Also worth mentioning that If we thought that Pine and Teddy didnât kiss on screen then clearly that wasnât entirely true because camera angle is nothing but a meticulous tool to tell a story, they will not have this angle if the director didnât want to send the message a certain way to the audience.
From the hand placement, their head tilted to different direction to fit for a kiss position, Roxana completely gone from the frame, just so we could see it as their kiss.
In a sense, it truly is, because when Teddy moved his head forward bumping his nose even more toward pine one last time before their dance end, their mouth is literally so close to each other, itâs definitely a peck at least if not a kiss, thatâs why Pineâs eyes fluttered at the end because heâs flustered, he did get his kiss.
After the dance end , then cut immediately to them smoking together, now I understand the implication, it's the cigarette after sex kind of thing.
With camera only focusing to their gaze, they're continuing those unresolved newfound curiosity of wanting to explore each other.
No one else know about what they felt of course but these two men know, something was changed during that dance, something click and they both know it, that's why those stare is just them trying to figured it out what is it but there's no explanation could possibly rational.
Especially in their situation, Teddy is sure Matthew is not telling all truth to him and Pine is definitely certain that this wasn't what he came here for, craving for a criminal, it should be just for show but why did he want it for real?
That's how his confrontation come to the surface, just trying to make sense of his own feeling, that outburst was uncalled for, or perhaps he just want Teddy to saw him with the new eyes that he wasn't just a dumb swiss banker, perhaps he would find him more attractive then.
