another shot of June’s surreal Van-carrying-train ride from England to France via Calais. There was crazy traffic to get there and they were canceling trains because of “issues with migrants”. Arriving on the French side at 3am we saw groups of people in the dark misty fields and police circling on the roads. It was all mysterious to me at that time, I had barely heard of Calais. This week news of it is playing on NPR in the U.S. If you google Calais Death you can quickly find a list of people who have died trying to cross the channel there. It isn’t hard to imagine people in developed countries finding themselves “on the wrong side of fence” someday due to disaster or environmental shift; it might not be you, it might be your children. if rich developed countries can’t get their shit, our shit, together to speed up and smooth out the process of migration, the “old rules” of dealing with moving populations will get older and more rickety as time passes. Meanwhile a guy gets in a Google-mobile sipping a twelve dollar coffee in a glowing city in the U.S. I’m cooking dinner casually watching the sun set listening to talk radio(obviously) in Rhode Island. I would love to ride in a Google-mobile. “Hello car, please drive me to the best spot to sip a latte and watch the sun set on my humanity”
