August 1822 was such a god-awful month for Wellington.

A howitzer destroys his hearing.

One of his best friends is clearly unwell, paranoid and distrusting him. Wellington tries to help, but he has duties taking him abroad, so he ensures his friend will see his doctor and writes at length to their other mutual friends of his worries.

Crossing the Channel in the new steam-packet, he finds the tremulous motion caused by the wheels "very unpleasant."

He barely manages to start doing his job when he gets the news that the previously mentioned best friend has killed himself.

Wellington then has to rush back to England, haunted by his last meeting with his friend, to be a pall-bearer at his friend's funeral.

The grave is barely capped when he has to convince the King to fill the dead best friend's position as Foreign Secretary with the man said friend once dueled. A man with whom Wellington himself is like oil and water, but who is politically necessary.

With that squared away, Wellington now has to prepare to take on his dead best friend's task of going to Vienna and Verona to try to get Europe to stay tranquil. The Instructions the new Foreign Secretary issues are not helpful.

You'd think a new month would make things better, but September is even worse. He asks a doctor to treat his lingering hearing issues and the treatment not only makes him terribly ill, it deafens him in that ear and permanently affects his balance. And then he still has to go abroad and deal with Europe.
