Finished Audio Piece
Here is our finished audio piece that we chose to include as part of our installation for the On Site Exhibition.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1TdqUcvajA
For this, we wanted the piece to be as long as possible. In this way we would not have any repetition, especially when people were viewing the piece.Â
As well as this we wanted to emphasise our feelings of frustration, and the idea of waiting that we have felt in this project so far.
For this we layered up different pieces of audio, from those recorded directly behind the front door, and the hallway. We chose to always place the dictaphone in the hallway when recording as we wanted the piece to feel as if those were in the hallway at all times, along with the viewing of the door.Â

On Site Exhibition
On the night of the exhibition we were unfortunately unable to get our audio to work which was frustrating as those who viewed it never got to experience the piece in the way we wanted.
Thankfully we were able to correct this and have it set up complete for the assessment the day after.
Here is our piece complete
Overall I feel I was pleased with the piece. This is the first time I have ever worked in collaboration in any project, and the first time I have also chosen to exhibition in collaboration.
Collaborating has definitely been a rewarding way to work, as well as allowing me to learn new ways of working. Overall me and Jessye have been able to work really well together, and seem to have the same thought processes and outcomes on how we want the work to look. I have definitely found it challenging, though only in the way that my previous work has been so personal and therefore I know what I want to do, and how I know how I want my work to look.
I would definitely collaborate again, as I feel that is rewarding in the sense of having a solid support system. When coming up against problems it is definitely easier to have two minds in finding a solution rather than one.
Although I was pleased with the outcome of our piece, I would by no means say that this is my strongest work so far, and therefore in this way I do feel a little defeated.Â

Audio and Film Experimentation
With our shots and audio pieces, this weekend me and Jessye have been able to experiment with what kind of audio and visuals work well. We have been able to work together in editing both.
22/06/13: Evaluation
Final Major Project Evaluation
Sarah Smith
For my Final Major Project I began looking into the concepts of Identity, Narrative and Documentary. Within these concepts came the themes of ritual, self-examination, voyeurism, honesty, ambiguity, exposure, reality and escapism. I specifically chose these themes as they had all appeared strong throughout my work in the year, and I felt I had not finished investigating them all. With all I wanted to be able to investigate each one in much more detail, and try to incorporate them in a way I had not so done in the year already.
At the beginning of my Final Major Project, I definitely felt a sense of confusion about where to take my work after having felt I had created successful work so far in the year. I knew I wanted to look at these same themes but in more detail, yet I was not too sure how. This is when I began to look at the work of various artists such as Sophie Calle, Sally Mann and Sam Taylor Wood. Having found inspiration in all three artists, my work began to cross over three main mediums, film, photography and audio. Although I throughout the year already I had experimented in lots of mediums, never had I done so in such a close amount of time, and so I definitely found this challenging. I felt as though I was interested in all three mediums in just as strong ways although because of this I felt no clear direction in which to take my work.
With this I then began to continue experimentation as I felt this may lead me to a clearer path in which to take my work. At this point I then began to look at the work of Cy Twombly and Mark Tobey, taking me into another medium of drawing. The medium of drawing was one I did not intend to work with in my Final Major Project, as I felt I had moved away from drawing and painting within the year, I feel this led to excitement and fear in my journey of FMP. It was also at this point that I began to struggle in finding a successful way of combining audio and still images I had captured. This is a time in my FMP that I did begin to struggle after having worked with such a range of mediums. I felt as though the wide range of mediums I was experimenting in, began to take away my clear concepts of the work I was trying to create, and therefore I believe I began to lose inspiration and confidence in my work.
I then began to look much more into research of artists, concepts, and theories to help me regain clarity on my work and direction. I believe this short break away from experimenting enabled me to regain a clear path in which to take my work, as well as allowing me to look back at experimental work I had created and create new meanings or ways of which to present this. At this point I began experimenting with audio visuals, this is the biggest leap I believe I made throughout my FMP journey. With this idea of using drawings of audio, I feel I have created some of the most successful, interesting and challenging work of the year.
I then again began to look into using the medium of film in my work, and enjoyed the idea of using footage from my trip to Hong Kong, but not necessarily declaring it was shot there. This allowed me to continue the concept of documentary and theme of realism, but I actually created a piece with audio attached to this that linked much more to escapism and voyeurism.
Choosing the work that would go into the FMP Exhibition I believe was a key turning point in my journey. Having worked in so many mediums, and covered quite a vast amount of themes, this time allowed me to review all of my work and try to understand if pieces worked well together, which ones, and did these make sense? It was at this point that the decision to include earlier A0 photographs in to the exhibition was made. I believe this was the right decision, as looking at my work it I realised I had begun to highlight things we overlook in our day to day lives. With this I felt the two A0 photographs from my ‘Grey Matter’ series worked better, as they were part of this day to day ritual theme that was running throughout my work, as well as this they were located in the bedroom which linked with my sleeping audio as well as my film that I felt captured the essence of dreams. My A0 photographs also brought in the themes of voyeurism, self – examination, honesty, exposure and reality, that I felt my earlier ‘Sensory Perception’ series images did not. I felt these images created too much ambiguity to allow any other themes to be attached to them. I also felt that my ‘Grey Matter’ images needed the A0 print size, as they declared more much than the ‘Sensory Perception’ images.
Overall I am pleased with the outcome of my work, and the outcome of the exhibition. There were certain challenging things such as my audio not being played along with my wall drawing at the exhibition opening night, and too much reflection on my A0 photographs due to the lighting and location of the pieces. Although these things have been learning curves, and reinstate the amount of organisation and time that is needed when creating art work digitally, as well as to learning to have patience when displaying work alongside other artists in an exhibition.
I feel as though my work links really well within the exhibition space, and with the working audio alongside the wall drawing, there is an obvious link of documentary, narrative and identity throughout all of my pieces displayed. I definitely wanted my work displayed separately in the space, in order to challenge the viewer about all pieces and their meanings separately and together.
If I was to go through this process again I would make sure I was much more organised, as I feel a lack of organisation let me down especially when working in so many mediums. Other than this I feel as though the process has been challenging though I am very pleased with the final outcome. I have been able to discover new mediums such as audio, and re-visit mediums such as drawing. I have also overcome issues with digital technology, issues in incorporating mediums successfully, and issues in understanding the work I am creating and linking this to other work through strong themes. Through the discovery of audio as a medium, I now aim to experiment much more with the medium over summer, and most probably into my degree.          Â
Being able to take part in the building, installing and curating of an exhibition has also allowed me to gain skills I feel will help me undeniably at degree level. Realising the amount of organisation, physical work and team effort that goes into every aspect of creating a successful space is one of the biggest things I will take away from the Final Major Project process. Creating a space for a shop in order to sell small editions is something that I know will also push me above others at degree level, and has again allowed me to understand the amount of detail, planning and discussing that is needed in order to create a professional and successful exhibition all round.

Overall I am really pleased with how my work has turned out in the exhibition. The process of installing such a wide range of work has allowed me to learn and improve for future exhibitions. The process has also allowed me understand the amount of organisation and time keeping that is needed in order to not be rushing at the last minute, as well as being to see your work hung or installed and wanting to make any changes.Â
If I was to do this journey again, I would ensure I would much more organised, and would consider including less pieces in the space. I say this as I feel it may be interesting to chose one strong piece and have only that, as this may make a stronger impact on the audience. Although I have not chosen to do this in this certain exhibition, I am really pleased with my decision to include a range of work as I feel as though I have created a successful wide range of work, and this shows a true representation of my journey throughout the Art and Design Foundation Year.Â
19/06/13: Exhibition Shop
Today me and other students that had chosen to create small editions, worked together to create a make shift shop in the college technicians work shop.
This was something I was a little wary of, as I could not understand how we could make the space look as professional as the gallery space in such a short amount of time, and within such a challenging space.
We decided to maneuver work tables and surfaces, to create a make shift counter, and a rotating walk way for buyers. We then cleaned surfaces and added canvas to the tops, to try to add a much more professional and clean look to the space.
After doing this we then began to look at everybody's work altogether to decide how we would price each piece, but in keeping with one another work, as to make sure none were priced too high or too low when in comparison. This is something I felt would be difficult and time consuming, but we all managed to be able to work together quite efficiently and agreeable in terms of prices, and value of work. I also felt this was a positive point of the day, as it can be very difficult to put a price on your own work, so hearing others opinions was a learning curve.
We also managed to make posters for the shop in terms of clear directions to it throughout the gallery space, as well as details on extra editions. We decided to do these in keeping with our exhibition posters, in terms of font and yellow coloured card.
After this we then began to look at each others work, and decide which spaces would be best for certain work, and work which would sit well alongside others.
We also made price tags, along with our names. We really wanted to make the space look professional for viewers, and felt we aim to treat is as we would with any other shop. We also managed to get our hands on bubble wrap, bags and tissue paper for the wrapping of work that would be bought.
Here is the shop complete
And here is my work displayed...
Overall I am really pleased with what we all managed to achieve in half a days work. I feel as though the shop turned out looking a lot more professional than I expected. This has been a really positive experience for me, in terms of moving forward on to my degree. I have been able to understand everything that goes into the making of a successful exhibition, as well as how to go about creating a professional space for small edition sales. I now aim to take anything I have learnt from this experience from painting boards in an exhibition space, to holding meetings, to hanging work, and to the organisation of creating extra pieces.Â
19/06/13: Exhibition pieces Complete
Today I was able to finally get my film installed correctly, as well as my audio.
Having feeling worried in the recent days about my film piece being completed, my tutor was able to help my install the piece. Even though this was last minute, many other pieces that included Mac screens were also only able to be fitted at such last minute due to other college students needing them to work.
After having seen my film installed, I am really really pleased with the piece. I also feel that this may be my favourite out of all the pieces included of my own.Â
Here is an example of the piece
I chose to install this piece in such a way in order to try and enhance the viewing experience, whether this be more challenging or not.
First of all I wanted to be able to drill a hole into the board the size of an eye, with the film being screened from a Mac screen behind the piece. To me this would add to the idea of the film touching on the idea of escapism, as well as intrusion or voyuerism. This was done in a way of trying to allow the viewer to feel inside the head of another.
I also chose to add headphones for the audio, as I feel that the audio is an important part of the piece, and needed to be heard clearly. Again this method may also add to the idea of looking into the mind of another, perhaps their dreams?
I chose to add the hole at a slightly lower than eye level point, as I wanted the viewer to have to duck or bend their knees ever so slightly. I also chose the hole to be off centre and more so into the wall as I felt this would add to the challenge of watching the piece.Â
The idea of adding the hole at an awkward height for me, was to try and make the viewer more aware of intruding on someones mind, and therefore this would make the act a little more difficult. The idea of choosing to add the hole off centre, closer to the wall added to the idea of  being hidden, which I feel is something we try to do when listening in on someones conversation or when watching something or someone we shouldn't be.
What was also interesting about the film piece when installed, was that as the film looped, and the screen was black for certain times, the viewer was able to see their own eye in the reflection.
Here is an example with my phone camera
For me this was really exciting, because it was something I did not intend for the installation, but something that I feel only adds to the piece. This again plays with the viewers mind of knowing they are peeping or are playing with the idea of voyuerism. This also is something the viewer can only see when the screen in blank, at the beginning and end of the film piece, therefore I feel they may forget about this after being immersed in the middle of the film with the footage that is shown.Â
For my audio piece, after having the speaker set up and playing, me and my tutor realised that the audio was still not loud enough for the placing of it in the corridor. To fix this problem I then used the audio and turned up the volume of it on the computer, then re-added the piece to the iPod shuffle and listened to it again.
This was a success and therefore I was really pleased overall with my work that was presented within the exhibition.

18/06/13: Exhibition Finishing Touches
Today was an opportunity of being able to finish off last bits before the exhibition. I still needed to ensure my film piece was fitted within the space, as well as my audio.
My A0 photographs had been hung last week, and I was pleased with these with the exception of little glare and reflection that could be distracting when viewing the pieces.Â
Although I find this slightly distracting, I was left with little options on how to fix the issue. With over 70 students on the course having been given their own space in the gallery with work already hung, I had either the option of keeping the images in this place, or move them into the corridor which was even darker, and I felt this would only make this problem worse. This has allowed me to understand the patience that is needed when working in a space with so many others, as well as realising that certain errors are out of your own hands due to this too.
I also have the installation of my audio to be completed within the corridor, alongside my wall drawing. With this I originally purchased an SD card, to insert into a small speaker which would fit behind the shelf I had installed.
Although after having added my audio onto the SD Card and inserting it into the speaker, there appeared to be a problem with device. To overcome this problem, I decided to borrow my dad's Ipod shuffle as this is small enough to be able to fit behind the shelf wall as well as the speaker.
This then will play on loop throughout the exhibition.
17/06/13: Small Edition Postcards and Frames
After searching for more spray paint and frames, I came across some better quality frames for only 19p more than the previous ones, and decided that by purchasing these I would be able save time spray painting as well as all frames would be matching.Â
As well as this, today I returned to the printers to collect my postcards, unfortunately realising that the printer had mixed up the matched images and image information which was to be printed on the back. Although this was not a major issue, I had paid for the postcards and therefore expected the job to be done. The printers decided to re-print a whole new set of postcards, allowing me 80 free postcards! Hopefully these can come in handy in the future.
Here are my finished Postcards, framed and unframed
Overall I am really pleased with the outcome of my postcards. I feel as though I chose a good range of work to include on them, as well as work that is not included within the exhibition, which may hopefully allow the audience to understand my work more or look into it more after the exhibition through this blog.
I am also really pleased with the simplicity of adding frames, and how much this changes the images.Â
Postcards for me are on the best ideas that has come out of discussions about small editions. They allow buyers to spend very little to get a piece of your work, as well as allowing a clear opportunity to include your details on the back.Â
13/06/13: Small Edition Postcards
Today I managed to go and hand over the 8 images I had chosen for my postcards.Â

I decided to go for 8 images printed onto 10 sheets in the end, resulting in 10 copies of each image, again due to lack of money in my account.
I was also informed that I would have to create my own document to be printed onto the back of the postcard, and I then did this at home and emailed it over to the printers.
I will have examples of the finished products when I pick them up on Monday morning from the printers.Â
I also decided that I wanted to be able to try and frame a number of postcards, in order to give a varied choice in editions.
I picked up some cheap frames from town, but there were no white frames left anywhere. I decided to buy some white spray paint and hope for the best...
Although half way through spraying the frames the spray paint ran out... I now aim to buy 4 more frames as I was only able to purchase 4 originally and I believe it would make more sense to have at least every image framed the once, as well as purchase more spray paint to get the editions done for exhibition night.
13/06/13: Exhibition Prep Continued
Today I was allocated my space for my film piece, again I was really pleased with my space, but felt I had to spend time re-doing certain jobs that others did not complete.Â
Therefore I spent my day scraping off double sided sticky tape, filling holes, applying gum strip and re-painting the space. After doing this I feel that the space looks a lot more professional. As this is now my last day in college before the exhibition due to work, I am a little nervous about my work being hung and especially my installation being fitted.
With installations I find that you never know if it will work before it has been tried, and as I will not be there to see this, I am a little wary of how we will overcome any problems. It's a good job I have the tutors I have, to be able to trust what they do.
My two A0 framed images now need to be hung, along with an eye sized hole to be drilled out of the board for which my film will be played behind on a Mac screen. As well as this there needs to be a hook hung on the board, for headphones to be hung on for the viewers.Â
12/06/13: Exhibition Prep Continued
Today I was told that the tutors wanted me to also include work that I have done as experimentation throughout the process of my Final Major Project.
It was the two landscape audio drawings I completed on wood that my tutors want to hang in the show.
For this I then asked technician Bill if he could attach a border around the back of the pieces, as the wood was quite flimsy, and this would make the work more sturdy as well as easier to hang.
After this I then began to paint the back of the pieces, and the sides, touching up any smudges that had also been made on the pieces in the process.
Hopefully these can now be hung along side my other audio drawing I completed on the wall in the corridor leading into the gallery space.
Another job I managed to tick off today was having a shelf built and fixed up next to my audio wall drawing, allowing somewhere out of reach and out of sight for the speaker which my audio will be played from.
I'm really pleased with how the shelf for the speaker turned out. I didn't want it to appear as any distraction from the piece, and I feel that it does this in no way. I now aim to test out my audio in the next week, and see if the blocked in looked of the shelf, has any effect on the audio.

12/06/13: Ikea Visit/Small Editions
Last night after college, me and two other students drove to Ikea in order to pick up our frames for small editions.
I was really pleased to be able to purchase the frames finally. Unfortunately, due to costs of postcards, and prints of A0 images that will be shown in the exhibition, I was unable to buy my original intended number of 10.
Instead I decided to go with 6 A4 size frames, as I felt that this was still a good number, along with my postcards and other pieces that will be available to buy at the show.
Here is my first EVER small edition!
I'm really really pleased with my first small edition, and now aim to get the other five finished off in the next week. I will continue to include the drawings on acetate, but changing the grid paper in the backgrounds, only make one of each.
11/06/13: Exhibition Space Prep
Today I was given my space in the exhibition for my A0 framed images. I am really happy with the space, but wanted to touch up certain areas on the boards, where holes had no been filled or gum strip was hanging off. For me it's really important for the space to look as good as it can, as surely this can only enhance how your work is seen by audiences?
After having refilled in holes, sanded them down, re-applied gum strip to edges and re-painted the area I'm really happy with the space I have been given. Now I am just waiting to find out where my last space will be for my film piece. Overall I am really really pleased with the space I have been given in the show, and feel as though everyone has been able to gain a space specifically for their needs and is happy with it.
