So one of my favorite things about WALL-E is how, even though it takes place in a future where humans have screwed up the Earth big-time, and weāre living in this impersonal complacency dystopia and everything, all the human characters (or at least the ones we meet at the time of the narrative) are good people.
And like, in that vein, I love Captain McCreaās arcāhis sense of wonder at discovering the vast, complicated beauty of our Earth; his shift, when his romantic notions are shattered, not to despair but to heroism; the way he takes on the true meaning of what has been a cushy figurehead position, and becomes a real decision-maker and leader.
But another thing that always really catches my attention is the little scenes when WALL-E meets John and Mary. Ā WALL-E doesnāt look or act like the Axiom robots, so they both react to him with some confusionābut at the same time, they automatically return his politeness. Ā Just by the simple act of exchanging names, they accept WALL-Eās invitation to engage with him, and they begin to count him as a friend. Ā John and Mary donāt do anything big to impact the main conflict or anything. Ā But it means a lot that when their routines are interrupted by a strange robot, their first impulse isnāt to be annoyed or suspicious, but to be friendly and nice without a second thought.
And these positive qualities arenāt limited to the humans that have been directly touched by WALL-Eās eccentricity. Ā When the deck tilts in the climactic scene, everyone reaches out and tries to help each other. Ā Everyone cheers for the captain when he stands up to AUTO; everyone feels for WALL-E and EVE in their moment of tragedy. Ā And everyone seems excited and hopeful about the prospect of returning to Earth and starting something new.
I just really love the optimism in this movie. Ā I love how the story posits that being kind and caring and curious and brave really isĀ the natural state of humanity, and itās just that sometimes we need a little push to remind us of that.
This analysis actually made me cry almost as much as the movie.
Thatās⦠Actually a really good quoteā¦.
Ultra Magnus doing non-Ultra Magnus-y things makes me really happy
Ultra Magnus doing Ultra Magnus-y things makes me happy
Ultra Magnus makes me happy
Ultra MagnusĀ
the idea of people having to be āusefulā is just so gross, like people do not exist to be used
having to produce something and have a use is a capitalist ideal and not an intrinsic part of humanity
just by being alive you are human and you are worth something and you can never be useless
Itās not even funny how badly I needed to hear this and now I wanna cry.Ā
This is relevant to what I was thinking the other day when listening to Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (Or however it's spelled). Rudolph is bullied for being different. But only when he saves the day and proves his difference to be useful that the people come to appreciate him ("then all the reindeers loved him"). How fucking awful is that? I know it's just a Christmas carol, but it's actually a very toxic idea that comes up a lot in fiction dealing with bullying.
People will love you if you make yourself useful.
It's not harmless. As a kid, I was bullied for 7 years, non-stop. And I clung to this carol and other similar naratives, I believed them. I believed that if I made myself useful, that if I saved the day, I would be loved and other kid would stop bullying me. I was so lucky not to be abused of because of this belief. It's these kinds of narratives that lead to toxic friendships and other toxic relationships. It's that kind of narrative that leads to that typical situation in fiction where the nerd does the bully's homeworks, and gets used in all other ways. You cling to the hope of being accepted if you're useful, and other people know this very well and use it to their own advantage.
I wish I could better express my ideas, but, hum... I guess you get the picture.

Saw an add today in the metro, apparently Bioware is hiring right now in Montreal. They want people to work on the next Mass Effect game.
Hi there, Tumblr!
My cousinās husband, Audran Guerard, is in a tight spot right now - he has worked as an art director for video game companies for years (he has worked for Ubisoft mostly, on popular titles such as Splinter Cell, Assassinās Creed 2, Dead Space 3), working in different departments all over the world (China, France, Singapore), before finally landing a contract in my cousinās hometown, Montreal.
He has been out of work for a while unfortunately, as his company has shut down to allow for restructuration work. His familyās savings have nearly depleted, but my cousin and her two children are hanging on. Her husband is starting a project in hopes that it will be able to support his family while he is not working on any video games - a graphic novel on the life of Frederick Douglass, born slave, later a political man and a writer, fervently fighting to abolish slavery in the United-States.
The project includes plans to make a trilogy, the kickstarter project funding only the first volume. My cousinās husband hopes that the profits from the first book will be enough to fund the other two books. He has until the end of the month to gather CAN$30,000 to start his project. You can go to the kickstarter page to see more details on the ways he intends to use the donated money, but I assure you that your donations will not go to waste!
The book will be illustrated with gorgeous watercolors, painted by my cousinās husband, and written by his coworker and friend Daniel Roy (who also worked on a few titles by Ubisoft, as well as for BioWare). Unfortunately, I cannot include any pictures seeing as I am typing this on my iPod in the middle of a lecture in uni (thatās how urgent it is), but there are plenty of previews and sample panels on the Kickstarter page, I hope that you will at least take a moment to look at these previews!
In this time in history, when slavery and segregation seems to have ended long ago (although it is not the case at all), I believe it is even more crucial that we remember the events surrounding slavery and make sure that they are never forgotten. Frederick Douglassā name is slowly fading away from History books in schools, and we must not allow this to happen. If he is to be erased from school textbooks in favour of white abolutionists, then letās make his name eternal through a unique tribute to his life, together!
If you do not want to fund this book but still wish to support my cousinās family, you can buy my cousinās children book āLittle Fennec Rain Hunterā, written by JoĆ«lle Tremblay and illustrated by her husband, Audran Guerard, on iTunes e-Book section!
