Can we please erase the idea that Korean beauty standards are a result of the influence of westernized beauty standards? Yes, we also have “impossible beauty standards” that are toxic and unhealthy. But that doesn’t mean it’s based on Eurocentric ideas of beauty. It’s so arrogant to assume that we all want to look like white people or care about Caucasian features or that the US/Europe have that much influence on what’s developing in our culture. The norm in Korea isn’t to get big butts, super tanned, or big lips the way it is in the US. Korean men also have very similar standards of attractiveness as women (men being feminine in Korea is increasingly common, as opposed to toxic masculinity being the big thing in the US). And to make the assumption that Korean beauty standards are derived from Western beauty standards can be actively harmful to Korean people who are trying to push back against these standards.
