“We’ve got to get out of here. NOW!” Bo threw my arm over his shoulder and kept running. My legs struggled to keep up with his long strides. The shooting pain in my ankle was now the least of my worries. I could hear the rushing of the water filling up the tunnels. It was coming for us fast. “Over there!” 

My feet were dragging more than running now. “Ow!” I yelled out in pain as he turned a corner and tripped over my injured leg. The rushing sound of the water was getting louder and louder. 

“Look, there’s a ladder!” Bo pointed upwards. 

I looked up. “Can you reach it?” The water drip stung my eyes. 

Bo jumped up, grabbed the ladder with his free hand, and pulled it down. He didn’t let me go for one second. “Can you climb?”

I hesitated. My leg stung and my sock was a dark maroon. “I’m going to have to.” 

Bo lifted me onto his shoulder so that I could reach the ladder.  “You got it, Zander?” 

“Got it.” I grabbed on to the ladder and pulled myself up, being careful not to put too much weight on my ankle. I reached the top, but the opening was covered by a heavy slab of cement. I began to feel the power coursing through my body. I took a deep breath in and pushed up with both of my hands. “I-got-this!” One final push made the cement cover go flying. I climbed out into the rain. Seconds later, Bo climbed out too.

“Good job, Little Man!” Bo patted me on the back a little too hard. “ I knew you could do it.”

I’m so nervous,

but I’m also kind of freaking excited.

(I’ve had pixie cuts before... some better than others. I always feel the most feminine and confident with a pixie cut.)

I’m also going shorter tomorrow than I have in the past.
