i just really love marys character and honestly i have so much hope for her. during the dinner scene when confronting clark, saying she doesnt know how to help him she says she cant save anyone, and its clear that she just realized it in that moment due to her little sigh of acceptance right afterwards.
in that moment she also realized that saving others wont save her. it wont rewrite her childhood or fix her mothers mental illness. so she doesnt continue to stay in her loops like clark. she sees right in front of her eyes what happens when you dont choose to change for the better.
she chooses to let go. she destroys the handprint, a symbol of her past that she always carries around. she leaves captain clark behind, despite her hesitation, she chooses not to stay.
and i think, if she manages to escape async, that she could get genuine help this time. because yes, she knows the window isnt locked. but she realizes now that to step through, she needs to make the move to open it first.
Oml please tell me anyone else heard Ulterior Motives playing in the bg of Mary's therapist party PLEASE
i don't know how to use this app

You were stuck at another party for your father's company. The events main reason for being hosted was to make it easier for your father to chat up investors who would promote his business. Of course you were stuck going, your dad has given you a lecture about how you were to inherit it someday, so people needed to see the next fresh face to know it's future. You didn't want his company, the whole thing was based in technology and e-commerce. Nothing about it was how you wanted to spend your life.
You found yourself drifting from conversation to conversation, not getting deep enough into any which one to really stay chatting with that one person. After a particularly nerve wracking convo with a handsy investor you made your way out to the balcony. The cool night air felt nice on your hot, clammy skin as you slipped a pack of cigarettes out of your bra. You went to go light it, but could not find a lighter to do it with. Suspecting it fell out, you leaned against the railing, about five seconds from a mental breakdown.
"Need a light?"
From the other side of the balcony patio came a voice, one that was gentle and smoky. You felt foot steps approach as woman emerged from the dark. She was breathtaking to put simply, dressed in a sleek black dress with a white, fur coat hanging off the shoulders. Her hair was kept up in a messy bun, a pin sliding through it. She kept walking until she was about one foot away from you, holding out her hand to give you a lighter.
" Thanks."
You offered her a slight smile, before holding the cigarette to your lip and lighting the other end. As you took a drag, the woman spoke.
"I recognize you, oh you're the daughter of the companies ceo right? Excuse me for the question, you must get that alot huh?"
You raised your eyes to hers, the older woman studying you with a slight smile. The way she asked you didn't seem like it held any malicious intent, no desire for pocket money. She had asked you to ask. You nodded.
"You caught me, than again it was obvious wasn't it? I'm featured in most photos, magazines.."
You spoke with disinterest, you never were one for the limelight, atleast when it came to being one of the representatives for a company you didn't even want to be a part of.
"You can call me Mary, I know you so it's only fair you know me."
She winks at you playfully, whatever rich arrogance she had before seemingly gone. You can't help but smile, one of the genuine ones you only flash every once in awhile.
"Mary...I like it."
She watches you roll her name around on your tongue, chuckling as you make a goofy face. You two end up making easy conversation for quite a bit getting to know eachother. You learn that she is the owner of her own company, one that makes millions, and that she doesn't live in the city but rather in a beach side home off the coast of a beach in the area. She had come to this party as an old friend of your mom's, which made alot of sense given that your dad invited anybody that had affiliations with the family. Only thing that didn't make sense is that your mom had never spoke of her, and she had passed almost five years ago.
It didn't matter much to you though. Mary seemed thoughtful, reserved. She wasn't asking to many questions, but just the right amount to keep a conversation. You found yourself slouching against the rail, focused on her every word. It had been quite some time sense you truly wanted to entertain someone, and it seemed that her too had not held this kind of connection is quite a while.
The party lasted deep into the night. You watched patrons become more drunk over time. A waiter comes up to the two of you looking absolutely exhausted.
"Care for a drink?"
Mary nods towards the waiter, a smile plastered on her lips.
"A Bourbon Cream & Coconut would be fine."
The waiter looks defeated, because obviously the drink is not on the tray provided.
"I'll have that right away Miss Kline."
Did you hear that right? Miss Kline. You had heard of her, she was a multi millionaire, owning one of the biggest companies in the area. You knew she looked familiar, she was plastered on billboards and featured in magazines.
"Miss Kline huh?"
Mary shrugs, not offering any energy towards the question. You two sit in an awkward silence, before Mary nudges your shoulder with her own.
"Say we go out sometime? Just the two of us."
She faces you completely, her body closer to you than it was before. You can smell her, the scent of vanilla and honey making you dizzy. The only thing that's grounding you from falling over is her gold locket necklace occasionally swaying. Mary reaches her hand up and brushes a stray hair from your head.
"(Y/n) you in there? I didn't scare you right?"
She teases you, guiding you up from slouching by placing her hand on the small of your back and pressing you forward. Your breath hitches slightly, not expecting the contact. Mary speaks, soft and smoky.
"Besides a pretty girl like you doesn't look like she has much to do, now does she?"
You get trapped under Mary's gaze, like she's gaging you, testing you to see what you say or do next. It feels strange but also comforting to be seen. If you had told yourself at age sixteen you'd be stuck at a investor party being humored by an older, attractive woman you would have giggled and not took much thought to the sentiment, after all this was kind of your dream.
You offer Mary a shy smile before nodding your head.
"I wouldn't mind, we will just have to set something up right?"
You released a breath you didn't even realize you had been holding. Mary grins, obviously like she approves of the answer, and gives you a little space to breathe.
"Sounds like a date."
The waiter comes back, Mary's drink set on his tray. Mary takes the drink, before sliding a few extra dollars into the waiters coat pocket. He smiles before hurriedly exiting, obviously being called over by another patron. Mary takes a sip before offering it out to you.
"Try some, it's not half bad."
She doesn't hand you the glass, instead having you sip from it by holding the glass up to your lips. You lock eyes with her as you do so, your cheeks heating up.
"Not half bad at all."
Mary raises a brow before presenting an airy laugh to the statement.
"You have taste, but than again I'm not to surprised especially given your backround."
Eventually the party comes to a close, you can tell due to the large amount of attendees hollering and shuffling around drunk, trying to get to the door. Mary had taken your arm, using it to balance herself. She seemed a tad bit tipsy, not that you were shocked. She had indulged herself on plenty more drinks after her first initial one. Mary and you made your way down to the entrance, before stopping outside the door.
"It was truly a good time we had, stay in touch darling?"
She hands you a note, a number scrawled across it. Before you have time to react you feel a peck to your cheek, before Mary has disappeared into the night. You're left with so many questions and feelings, holding your cheek like the kiss might fade if you remove your hand.

The first rule of fandom is have fun. The second rule of fandom is find an enabler and become an enabler. Yes you should write that fic. What if it was even hornier? What if it was angstier? What if you wrote it just for me?
