I feel pretty underwhelmed by the lack of variety with Inkling haircuts in the new game. I was expecting more variety and honestly I’m kinda let down.

Hm, from my knowledge I think that would work as well. The only problem is I believe if you played multiple consecutive matches before the hackers your progress will be lost.

When you don’t see the player’s name anymore in the team listings, that is when they’ve quit and it’s safe to exit the game. As far as I know you’re stuck with them till they quit.

This whole situation is quite a bit unsettling. If you are able to, I recommend backing up your save somehow. The best thing we can do right now is hope Nintendo will fix this soon and be aware of it.
