I've finally got to the first microbiology, immunology & genetics unit of my degree and I am PSYCHED. 2 years of hard work and I'm finally beginning to study the things that brought me here.
hey folks, quick update because some of you may want to unfollow.
due to some challenging mental health issues I'm currently vegetarian.
I still believe in the ethics of veganism, but unfortunately right now my "as far as possible and practicable" is not very far at all. I'll return to living vegan when I am able, but I am not holding any guilt about doing my best even when that best just isn't much.

Hi tumblr. I really hate to do this, but Iâm in a squeeze. I donât get paid for another week and I have no food in the house plus an overdue phone bill.

So Coles supermarket will apparently stop selling plastic cutlery, plates, bowls, etc this year. They will still be selling seafood, beef, dairy, eggs, and products containing palm oil.Â
As a neurodivergent person, fuck this :)

Stop replying to posts that are asking "where can I get X?" With "just make it yourself :))))"
It's condescending and ablist. If I wanted to know how to make something, that's what I'd be asking.
There is a weird hypocritical pocket of vegans who ascribe to trans exclusionary radical feminism, and I'm not even interested in getting into the cognitive dissonance required to hold both viewpoints simultaneously but I do think that it's our duty as vegans to keep our communities safe for trans women. Aside from making your support for trans people vocal and clear, this also means making sure transphobes know their beliefs are opposed to ours and they're not welcome in our spaces. Block them ruthlessly and on sight and don't waste time or energy arguing with them that you could instead put into supporting trans vegans
Perhaps describing this phenomenon as a "weird, hypocritical pocket of vegans" was too flippant. Veganism has a TERF problem.
Society has a transmisogyny problem but veganism specifically and on this website in particular has a trans exclusionary radical feminism problem.
I am not even a popular vegan blogger, I make a handful of vegan posts a year that get a couple hundred notes or more and they're the only things that bring TERF activity into my notes, I can't imagine how much worse it is on a larger scale.
Veganism is a movement rooted in compassion. You cannot simultaneously be part of a movement that respects the rights of animals, that is committed to exploiting and harming them as little as possible while also being part of a movement that is committed to harming and denying the rights and humanity of vulnerable women. Those are not compatible philosophies.
The vegan movement cannot work with or include TERFs, not even if it's convenient, not even if we agree on some points. As vegans we must reject bigotry in all forms if we're going to claim to stand for anything at all.
As vegans we agree that you cannot be neutral on a moving train. As vegans we take action, we abstain from exploiting animals as much as we can, we educate others, we participate in direct action, we strive to live in accordance to our ethics.
This has to extend to the company we keep. We must prove our support for our trans siblings by making sure our spaces are inclusive of them and safe for them and this means making sure there's no tolerance for TERFs within our movement.
Tofu stir fry!
*eats a bliss ball* am I healthy yet?
My doctor insisted I do a keto diet.
I told him I'm vegan.
He said "oh that'll make it too difficult for you".
So now I'm doing vegan keto.

Next non-vegan to scold my ADHD ass about using coffee pods and pre-packaged salads is getting pushed off a cliff.
Next VEGAN to scold your ADHD ass about using coffee pods and pre-packaged salads should ALSO be pushed off a cliff.
(Vegan or not, we should not criticize others for doing their best. No one can be perfectly environmentally friendly, and while its ideal to not use single use plastics, its also not possible to fully avoid. If this is where you're at right now, so be it. Good job!)
Thanks, it's true that anyone saying such things are being annoying and ablist. It's just extra annoying when non-vegans present their standards of eco-friendliness as something a vegan should aspire to.
The most annoying part though, is the implication that I somehow had no idea I could buy a whole carrot instead of a bag of carrot sticks until they pointed it out. Like, no shit Susan, but that carrot will go into my fridge and stay there until it's runny. If I buy a bag of carrot sticks there is a much higher chance of me actually consuming a vegetable instead of just munching sliced bread or ordering take out.
Anywho. Kudos to all those who realise pre-sliced and packed food is an accessibility tool.
âVeganâ leather is worse for the environment than real leather and i feel like thatâs something everyone should be taught
Yes, they should be all âtaughtâ this blatant falsity on the basis of what⌠a meme? Text posts which never have any sources or evidence. It turns out there is a very good reason these claims are never backed up with anything substantial - and that is because they are demonstrably false. That you require literally zero evidence for any of this is such a blatant example of confirmation bias that it would be funny, if tens of thousands of people werenât swallowing it as truth despite having been presented with absolutely nothing to back it up.
No, vegan leather is not worse for the environment than cowâs leather, that claim is objectively untrue. According to the Higg Sustainability Index, which is pretty much the industry standard for measuring the environmental impact of fabrics, cow leather is the second least sustainable material measured, only behind alpaca wool, and worse than even plastic. If you donât believe that, look it up on literally any fabric sustainability comparison. Cowâs leather is worse than plastic in absolutely every category, from production to disposal.
Besides, this entire discussion is a blatant example of false dichotomy. Vegan leather is not a synonym for plastic, there are plenty of sustainable plant-based fabrics which are far better for the environment than both plastic and wool. There are recycles materials, there is pinatex, bark, cork, pineapple fibre, coconut fibre, bamboo, hemp⌠Hell, I have a wallet made out of literally just leaves Iâve had for six years with no sign of it falling apart. This comparison is completely and obviously biased, but even in this incredibly unfair comparison, where we compare the least sustainable vegan material with cowâs leather, the vegan material still wins.
Next non-vegan to scold my ADHD ass about using coffee pods and pre-packaged salads is getting pushed off a cliff.
okay, this might be a really stupid level 100 vegan thing, but does anyone else hate it when people give their pets stupid names? Just saw a Facebook post from someone whose fiance wouldnât let her name their kitten âdumptruckâ. Why would you want to do that? Animals arenât toys or entertainment, they should be treated with a modicum of respect. Cute or even humourous names are fine to a point, but stupid names are just treating animals like things instead of beings.Â
What do you think about the great divide between vegans? Which side are you on? Are you willing to fight for you opinion? I am ofcourse referring to the Hass/Shepherd avocado divide and which one is objectively better.. ...
There is room for both sides to flourish, comrade. Hash is creamier so better to eat on toast or by itself, Shepard keeps better and doesnât go brown as quickly so itâs better in guac and salads. We are not so different afterall. If you prick us do we both not bleed green? If you strike us to we both not bruise ridiculously easily? Do boomers not tell millennials that if they stopped eating us on toast theyâd be able to afford a house? We must end this bitter war before it is to too late... Think of the children.

Lost my job a couple of weeks ago due to the pandemic, and the fridge is nearly empty.
Hit me with your favourite super-cheap meals & recipes please!!
What do you have available? Rice, beans, spices? Let me know and I'll help you come up with some stuff if you want :)
I've got nothing in really, got to hit the supermarket tomorrow and I'm looking for meal ideas to make my shopping list. I do have a block of firm tofu so I'll be wanting to do something with that.
When I eat tofu I usually eat it with rice and stir fry veggies. Most supermarkets have a frozen "stirfry" veggie mix. I also get orange marmalade to make a sauce. The sauce is usually orange marmalade, soy sauce, and Sriracha if you want some spice. You could also add vinegar if you want it a little more tangy. If orange marmalade is too expensive then just plain sugar should be fine. Then I usually fry the tofu, but you could also bake it.
I also usually make stews/chili when I don't have much in the house. I just throw a couple cans of beans and lentils in a pot and add spices (plus other veggies if I have them). Stores also usually have a "soup" mix of veggies that has corn, green beans, carrots, and maybe peas. Potatoes are also cheap so i usually add a couple of those in too. You can make a huge batch for pretty cheap and it lasts quite a while. I usually have it with oyster crackers but it tastes just as good without. I can give you a more specific recipe if you want but I usually just do any beans I like with some frozen veggies and potatoes.
Not sure what stores are in your area, but depending on the store they may also have smoked paprika. Its not that expensive and its my favorite spice, it goes with any meal and makes it taste a lot fancier, so if you have a little cash left over and can afford it I would definitely get some. Its the perfect spice for any savory food. Use that and some garlic powder and its heaven.
I hope some of that helps. Some of the items I mentioned I haven't gotten in a while (like Sriracha) so I don't know the price. Sorry in advance if some of my suggestions are a little ignorant. I fortunately don't have to worry about money right now so im not as focused on food prices as others rn.
Thank you, this is really helpful! Orange marmalade sauce sounds fantastic, pretty sure I can get some marmalade quite cheap and I already have soy sauce and sriracha. I'll have a look at smoked paprika too. I don't really know anything about spices so I'll try your suggestions. Thanks again!
