Almost a year ago now, you graciously accepted the offer to participate in the UA High school foreign exchange program. Coming from the states, you were aware that there would be a bit of a culture shock. Your grandparents on your mom's side left for America about 20 years ago, and your parents met in a high school in California. The rest is history.
Around the age of 10, you began to hear voices and see figures along the streets. They took a wispy form, and you decided to ignore them... until your grandfather passed away.
~~~ One morning, as the sun was peaking through the blinds in your room, you heard the crinkling of a newspaper and could smell the sweet fragrance of coffee. Alarmed, you sat up, to find your desk chair pulled out, and your grandfather, plain as day, reading his morning paper.
"Grandpa?"
He jumped, his figure almost translucent. The scent of coffee faded for a second
"Hi kiddo."
"What are you doing here? I thought you were-"
"Thought I was dead? I am, I just needed to explain a few things about your quirk."
"My what? So are you a ghost? I don't understand."
"You have a special power, just like me. It skips generations, but I could tell."
"How could you-"
"You don't think I didn't see you walk around the souls in the middle of the super market? Or the way you would cower at night, seeing the various faces of the demons doomed to walk the mortal plane looking for souls to steal?"
"Okay but wha-"
"I need you to listen very carefully. There's a school I attended. I need you to go to Japan. UA High school. There are a few exams you will have to take, but I want you to try it out for a semester and see how it goes. You'll make friends, there will be trials, tribulations. I need you to carry on our legacy. Don't ignore the spirits, they are well aware of you and me. They will work with you, as well as the demons. You just need to work to gain their trust, do a few favors here and there. I believe in you, and there's nothing you can't do--"
With the last of his words ringing in your ears, he faded into thin air. The smell of coffee dissipated, and the newspaper was nowhere to be found.
~~~
Now, I'm sixteen. I would be going into my Junior year of high school here, but I've packed my bags, said some bittersweet goodbyes to my friends, and made my way to the airport. My mother rushes me to the terminal, even though we are over an hour early.
"You know the right way to introduce yourself, right?"
"Yes, mom."
"Okay, your father and I love you very much."
"Thanks for teaching me everything I needed to know."
"Good afternoon. Would all passengers travelling to Musutafu on flight FR3421 please have your boarding passes and passports ready for boarding. Flight FR3421 now boarding at gate 21."
"You're welcome. Now remember. One phone call every night."
"I promise. I love you too y'know?"
With that, you boarded the plane. A chill ran up your spine as you sat down in your seat and you tried not to think much of it as the voice of the flight attendant ran everyone through the safety procedures.
~~~
Once up to a cruising altitude, you unfasten your seatbelt, the click of the buckle ringing softly in your ears. You make your way to the restroom, shutting and locking the door behind you. The room smells like a forest full of pine trees.
"Do you mind?"
You see a spirit zipping up his pants.
"Uh- sorry mister I-"
"Wait you can hear me?" He reaches out to grab your arm but you move away.
"Yeah, I can hear you but why-"
"I was just going back home. I came here to visit an old friend from the academy. He... he had the same quirk as you!"
"What was his name?"
"We just called him Soul."
"That was my grandfather. He passed away several years ago though..." You cast your eyes downward, tears pricking at the corner of your eyes. You haven't seen him since that incident in your bedroom.
"Hey, cheer up kid! I saw him, and he told me about you, about how well you're doing. He's watching you from the shadows. Just like him to be mysterious and not come forward himself."
The tears cleared from your eyes as you made the connection, "Wait... you went to UA? What was your quirk?"
"It's better for me to show you." He holds a hand out toward the sink, and a few droplets start to flow, followed by a light stream. He points a finger and draws a small molecule of water from the stream, whirling it around in the air.
"You can manipulate water, even as a spirit? That's... so cool!"
He washes his hands in the sink, then turns to you. "I can tell you more stories later. Just call out my name, and I'll come find you."
As he begins to fade, you call out, "What's your name, sir?"
"Kiso."
~~~
As the wheels hit the runway, you jolt awake. You rub your neck, urging the pain to leave you alone. Once the plane comes to a stop, you wait patiently for the other passengers to leave, then stand up, a new pain appearing in the creases behind your knees. You disembark, quietly going down the tunnel, and setting foot into Japan for the first time.
You look around. The airport is smaller than the one in California, and nearly empty. You check your phone and notice the time has changed. It's one in the morning. You move off to the side and text your mom that you have made it safely and that she doesn't have to worry.
Dark spirits are roaming up and down the corridor as you make your way to the baggage carousel. They eye you up and down, and you do your best to avoid the uneasy feeling as you walk right through one, hoping that was enough for them to ignore you.
The figure follows you all the way there, stopping short of a man in all black with a white scarf draped around his neck. You think nothing of him until you notice your bright pink suitcase in his hand.
"Y/N?"
You nod your head.
"Let's get going."
There's a car parked right outside of the exit, with a man that appears to be a mouse driving.
You hope you don't have to get into that car as the man begins to make his way around the vehicle, and that hope is crushed to nothing as the trunk is popped and your suitcase is inserted safely inside.
"You gonna get in?"
You realize that you had stopped walking and quickly pick up your pace towards the car. You sit down in the backseat as the dark spirit transmits its body into the seat next to yours.
"Welcome to Japan Y/N. I'm Nezu, the principal of U.A."
He can talk? You try your best to keep your eyes in their sockets as you mutter a thank you, the sleepiness from the flight still lingering.
"I'm Aizawa, and I'll be your teacher in class 1-A. Unfortunately, you will have a room to yourself at the school, but I'm sure any of the girls would be happy to help you out with homework and other things if you need it."
"Thank you," the dark figure was slowly scooting closer to you, reaching out it's hand until it was almost touching.
"STOP!" You hear tires screech as you yell.
"What's the issue?" Nezu turns around to look at you.
"Just a scummy demon trying to mess with me. I-I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize Y/N. We're here to help." Aizawa looks you in the eyes, his voice gravelly as if he hasn't slept in days. His eye bags confirm this theory.
You smile softly as the car rolls forward again. Your phone goes off with a text from your mom reminding you to brush your teeth twice a day and to wash your laundry and separate your whites from your colors.
Soon after, you arrive at the school, and Aizawa hands you a set of keys. You quietly make your way to your room, the spirit lingering outside of the dorms.
Unpacking goes smoothly, and as you begin to hang your shirts, you recognize uniforms in your closet that match your size. You take one look out the window after you turn your lights off and see two glowing red eyes staring back at you.
